Memorial College of Education Barsana Mor Birhi Kalan Charkhi Dadri Introduction Old English literature (sometimes referred to as Anglo-Saxon literature) encompasses literature written in Old English (also called Anglo-Saxon) in Anglo-Saxon England from the 7th century to the decades after the Norman Conquest of 1066. "Cædmon's Hymn", composed in the 7th century according to Bede, is often considered the oldest extant poem in English, whereas the later poem, The Grave is one of the final poems written in Old English, and presents a transitional text between Old and Middle English.[1] Likewise, the Peterborough Chronicle continues until the 12th century. The poem Beowulf, which often begins the traditional canon of English literature, is the most famous work of Old English literature. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has also proven significant for historical study, preserving a chronology of early English history.Alexander Souter names the commentary on Paul's epistles by Pelagius "the earliest extant work by a British author".[2][3] In descending order of quantity, Old English literature consists of: sermons and saints' lives, biblical translations; translated Latin works of the early Church Fathers; Anglo-Saxon chronicles and narrative history works; laws, wills and other legal works; practical works ongrammar, medicine, geography; and poetry.[4] In all there are over 400 survivingmanuscripts from the period, of which about 189 are considered "major".[5] Besides Old English literature, Anglo-Saxons wrote a number of Anglo-Latin works. -

In “Old English Ecologies,” I apply the relatively new critical perspectives of ecocriticism and place- based study to the Anglo-Saxon canon to reveal the depth and changeability in these literary landscapes. -

MONIQUE TANGELDER RADBOUD UNIVERSITY NIJMEGEN Abstract The Dream of the Rood is an Old English poem that contains both pagan and Christian elements. This mix has given rise to much debate on the nature of the pagan-Christian relationship in the Dream’s religiosity. The argument here is that Anglo-Saxon Christianity should be understood as a syncretic religion: a unique blend of different cultural and religious traditions that have merged into a seamless whole. Syncretism and inculturation are often used as blanket terms for interreligious phenomena, but Baer’s framework describes syncretism as a specific stage in the conversion process. Using syncretism as a framework, we see that the pagan elements in the Dream are projected onto Christian concepts and even used to strengthen Christian narratives. This is Christianity as experienced through a pagan heritage. There is no exhaustive theoretical framework of syncretism, but the Dream’s religiosity may serve as a case study to expand existing theories. Green Book Of Meditations Volume Ten Research Resources On Druidism 2003 Introduction Originally this was going to be the bulk of ARDA 2’s Part Seven Miscellany, but due to some copyright concerns and the general wholeness of the subject matter, it seem that a Green Book was possible out of the material. Much of material of Section Two is from ARDA 1’s Part Eight, and much from ARDA 1’s Part Seven is now here in Section Three and Four. This section will naturally expand over the years, so it’s a good idea to separate it from the main body text of ARDA 2. I don’t wish you to misinterpret this book as if for me to say that you have to be fascinated and obsessed with Celtic research to understand Druidism. That’s not what I mean. Yes, I’ve studied the old ones, but I think there is more than can be learned form living plants and animals and each other than from the few remaining scraps. Medical and Magical Treasures in Anglo- Saxon Herbals Val Thomas There is great power and appeal for the serious magical practitioner in seeking wisdom from ancient sources rather than relying solely on modern, potentially derivative works. For those with an interest in the fragrant, green path of herbal medicine and magic, the writings of our Anglo-Saxon ancestors provide a wealth of useful knowledge, rooted firmly, not only in our land, but also in the more ancient Classical and European herbal traditions. There are three major surviving medical texts compiled by the Anglo-Saxons in Old English (O.E.), found in manuscript sources. Now known as The Leechbook of Bald, The Lacnunga and The Old English Herbarium. They were collected by Oswald Cockayne in Leechdoms, Wortcunning and Starcraft in Early England, published in three volumes between 1864 and 1866. This work is comprised of over 1,000 pages of parallel text. The O.E. is reproduced in the script known as Insular Hand, in which most A.S. records were written, accurately and meticulously transcribed from the original manuscripts by Cockayne himself (Singer, 1961). Leechbook The oldest major text in the collection is the manuscript, written about 950 CE, containing the three recipe collections known as The Leechbook of Bald. It is probably a copy of a lost manuscript written in Winchester about fifty years earlier, during the reign of Alfred the Great (Cameron, 1993). He was fond of writing and translating hymns, and collecting the folk-songs of England. He produced two collections of folk-songs – Songs of the West published in 1889 and A Garland of Country Songs published in 1905. He also wrote a 16 volume collection called The Lives of the Saints. Despite his position in the church, Baring-Gould was keenly interested in folk-lore and mythology. A prolific writer, his bibliography lists some 500 books that ranged from novels to ghost-stories, to biographies and antiquities. Two of his most well-known and enduring works are Curious Myths of the Middle Ages and this volume The Book of Were- Wolves. H.P. Lovecraft was a great admirer of the former book, finding it a most effective assemblage of stories. The Book of Were-Wolves is one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy, as well as cannibalism. Born into a family of some means on the 28th of January, 1834 at Dix’s Field in Exeter. -

THE GOD OF THE LUPERCAL* By T. P. WISEMAN (Plates I-IV) On 15 February, two days after the Ides, there took place at Rome the mysterious ritual called Lupercalia, which began when the Luperci sacrificed a goat at the Lupercal. There was evidently a close conceptual and etymological connection between the name of the festival, the title of the celebrants, and the name of the sacred place: as our best-informed literary source on Roman religion, M. Terentius Varro, succinctly put it, 'the Luperci [are so called] because at the Lupercalia they sacrifice at the Lupercal . the Lupercalia are so called because [that is when] the Luperci sacrifice at the Lupercal'J What is missing in that elegantly circular definition is the name of the divinity to whom the sacrifice was made. Even the sex of the goat is unclear - Ovid and Plutarch refer to a she-goat, other sources make it male2- which might perhaps imply a similar ambiguity in the gender of the re~ipient.~Varro does indeed refer to a goddess Luperca, whom he identifies with the she-wolf of the foundation legend; he explains the name as lupapepercit, 'the she-wolf spared them' (referring to the infant twins), so I think we can take this as an elaboration on the myth, and not much help for the rit~al.~ 'Lupercalia' is one of the festival days (dies feliati) that are named in large letters on the pre-Julian calendar. (Whether that list goes back to the early regal period, as Mommsen thought, or no further than the fifth century B.c., as is argued by Agnes Kirsopp Michels in her book on the Roman ~alendar,~it is the earliest evidence we have for the Lupercalia.) There are forty-two such names, of which thirty end in -alia; and at least twenty of those thirty are formed from the name of the divinity concerned -Liberalia, Floralia, Neptunalia, Saturna- lia, and so on. -
