I am ever so grateful to the members of my seminar group for your guidance and humor as we all trudged through our work. It was always good to know that I was not alone in this endeavor. I must also thank the members of my committee for their guidance so that I could do my very best work. Dr. Flowers, in particular, has had to deal with my frustrations, humor, talkativeness, and anxiety—I’m sorry that I have caused such consternation at times. In the end, we can both be proud of my work and know that we have connected the dots in new and exciting ways. Recently, my husband and son were in Washington DC, and I got a picture of a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt regarding the impact of FDRs health on his work. She said, "Franklin's illness...gave him strength and courage he had not had before. He had to think out the fundamentals of living and learn the greatest of all lessons—infinite patience and never ending persistence." In this quote, my husband saw me, and for that I am forever grateful. He has allowed me to complete a goal that I had set for myself long ago. I will carry that strength with me as we embark on new and exciting adventures. Throughout this journey, I have had a chance to reflect deeply on what I do, not just in my career, but in how I live each day. I know with acute clarity that I long for personal growth and that I want to share the joy of learning and being one’s true self with others. What a life I have already lived…I can’t wait for what comes next. MOVING BEYOND THE APPLE ORCHARD iv Abstract The purpose of the study was to understand the institutional forces that constructed and shaped the function, nature of funding, and governance of Washtenaw Community College (WCC). To do this, I studied the founding and development of WCC using organizational theory. This qualitative, historical case study used archival research to identify themes and the institutional building blocks for the junior college movement at large and the transition of the junior college to the comprehensive community college in the 1950s and 1960s as it served to buffer and bridge the post-secondary world. This study discovered that WCC was not a grassroots endeavor by the community with an interest to create opportunities for the county residents. Instead, WCC was created and developed by agent-based construction or through intentionality and purpose by county leaders who used regulative and normative means to create a narrative that a “community” college would best serve the interests of the public. As WCC was created with both vocational training and transfer programming, balancing those functions, funding, and governance further defined the institution and its role in the community. These findings can help educational leaders understand the historical underpinnings of the community college and its relationship to other educational institutions and the community it is designed to serve.     1 THE LEADERS AND BEST he beginning of a new university presidency is usually associated Twith the pomp and circumstance of an academic inauguration ceremony. The colorful robes of an academic procession, the familiar strains of ritualistic music, and the presence of distinguished guests and visitors all make for an impressive ceremony, designed to sym- bolize the crowning of a new university leader. Of course, like most senior leadership positions, the university presidency takes many forms depending on the person; the institution; and, perhaps most signi‹cant, the needs of the times. Clearly, as the chief executive of‹cer of an institution with thousands of employees (faculty and staff) and clients (students, patients, sports fans), an annual budget in the billions of dollars, a physical plant the size of a small city, and an in›uence that is frequently global in extent, the management respon- sibilities of the university president are considerable, comparable to those of the CEO of a large, multinational corporation. A university president is also a public leader, with important sym- bolic, political, pastoral, and at times even moral leadership roles, par- ticularly when it comes to representing the institution to a diverse array of external constituencies, such as government, business and industry, prospective donors, the media, and the public at large. Peckham’s book, The Making of the University of Michigan, was first published to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the University of Michigan in 1967. Organized by chapters describing the era of each president of the University, from Henry Philip Tappan to Harlan Hatcher, the book became a popular source of information concerning the University’s history to students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the University. To celebrate the 175th anniversary of the University twenty-five years later, the University’s History and Tradition Committee com- missioned Professor Nicholas Steneck and Dr. Margaret Steneck to revise and up- date Peckham’s history, adding chapters on the presidencies of Robben F. Fleming and Harold T. Shapiro, adding numerous illustrations to the text, and revising somewhat the earlier draft. In part as an effort to pull together and organize my own experiences as presi- dent, during the late 1990s I drafted a chapter on “the Duderstadt era” from an au- tobiographical perspective using the Peckham style. Although this might appear to some as adopting the perspective of Winston Churchill who once stated that “History will be kind to me for I intend to write it!”, my rationale was to use the Peckham approach both to understand my tenure and to shape a more ambitious autobiographical project, The View from the Helm, published in 2007.

    The President’s House at the University of Michigan Anne Duderstadt i Preface The President’s House of the University of Michigan is the oldest building on the University campus. It is one of the original four houses constructed to house faculty when the University moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837. The Cropsey painting of the original campus in 1847 with two of the faculty houses shown on the left The four houses, built by Harpin Lum for a total cost of $26,900, all served the University in one capacity or another through the early years of the twentieth century. Completed in the summer of 1840, two of the houses fronted on North University and the other two on South University. The two-story plan included a central hall with two rooms opening off each side. The identical arrangement was repeated on the second floor. Each room had a fireplace. All of the houses had low-pitched, tin roofs. Emil Lorch, professor of architecture at the University felt these structures "had quiet dignity, good proportion, and excellent detail.” He was particularly impressed with the entrance porches and the intricacies of their cornices. The Early Years From 1841 to 1852 the University was governed by a faculty committee and the houses were apportioned among the professors. In 1852 Henry Philip Tappan became the first President of the University. Henry and Julia Tappan ii Tappan and his family moved into the vacant southwest dwelling and by his presence made it what it remains today—the President’s House. Tappan made no modifications to the house except to see that gas lighting was installed in 1858.
