  • GOOD BYE ROLAND DE LA POYPE Honor and the Defense of Freedom
http://www.caffrenchwing.fr AIRSHOW http://www.lecharpeblanche.fr CAF FRENCH WING - BULLETIN MENSUEL - MONTHLY NEWSLETTER http://www.worldwarbirdnews.com Volume 17 - N° 11 - Novembre 2012 EDITORIAL s I was preparing the excellent article Asent by Stéphane Duchemin, about one of the Normandie-Niemen mechanics, Guy Leloup, the terrible news about the death of Roland de la Poype arrived. Decidedly, life is full of those happy or dramatic coincidences… So I changed my plans about this edition of our Newsletter and wrote a modest article intended to pay tribute to a very great man whose popularity was due to his huge modesty, to his great intellect, to his creative spirit, and to his uncountable acts of bravery during the Second World War. Roland de la Poype has joined General Risso, Marcel Albert, and all the members of the Neuneu who have already disappeared, pilots, mechanics, and every man and woman who accomplished their tasks conscientiously in the name of GOOD BYE ROLAND DE LA POYPE Honor and the defense of Freedom. ou will not find any news about the work Yin the hangar this month because illness hit the two main actors of this project, Roger Gouzon and myself. The other volunteers also became rather rare because of their professional and personal occupations, but I hope that they will be more available soon. The list of things to do is still very long. You will find it on the new French Wing web site in the part restricted to members. his web site is progressively built by TBertrand Brown, Stéphane Duchemin, and myself, but if some members feel like helping with the elaboration of its contents, they will be very welcome.

  • The First Ace
Chapter One The First Ace It is generally agreed that the title ‘ace’ applies to any fighter pilot who has destroyed five or more enemy aircraft in air to air combat. It is also generally agreed that the term originated with the French in the early part of 1915. It is not generally known, however, that the first pilot to earn this accolade was a Frenchman named Roland Garros, who was a lieutenant in the French air force. At the time he was trying out a new device which was fitted to his Morane monoplane. This was very much his own idea, and allowed him to fire a fixed machine gun through the arc of his propeller. It consisted simply of fitting deflector plates to the airscrew blades. The story is told in more detail in later paragraphs, but for the present it is only necessary to note that his success was immediate and decisive. Garros shot down five German aircraft in just over two weeks between l and 16 April 1915. This was a feat absolutely unheard of at the time, and seldom equalled since. He received the Legion of Honour, and his victories were given prominence in most of the Allied newspapers. He became a hero overnight. How the term ‘ace’ came to be applied to him and to future airmen is best told by Arch A Morane-Saulinier Type N aircraft. (AWM H04376) 1 AUSTRALIAN FIGHTER ACES Whitehouse in his book Decisive Air Battles of the First World War: Five victories in sixteen days! That was the initial harvest of Roland Garros’ front-firing guns.

  • The Poor School Sisters of Notre Dame in Hitler's
“BITTER TIMES:” THE POOR SCHOOL SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME IN HITLER’S GERMANY, 1933 TO 1945 A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Martina Cucchiara Doris L. Bergen, Director Graduate Program in History Notre Dame, Indiana November 2011 Copyright 2011 Martina Cucchiara “BITTER TIMES:” THE POOR SCHOOL SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME IN HITLER’S GERMANY, 1933-1945 Abstract by Martina Cucchiara This dissertation focuses on Catholic sisters in modern Germany, with a particular emphasis on Nazi Germany. In the 1930s, nearly one hundred thousand nuns lived in Germany; this figure compares to about 22,000 priests. I present a representative case study of the Poor School Sisters of Notre Dame. With about 4,000 members, the institute of the Poor School Sisters of Notre Dame was one of the largest teaching congregations in Germany in the 1930s. My work destabilizes common historical narratives that associate women’s progress in the modern era only with secularization. Catholic religious vocations in fact offered countless women an alternative to marriage, a higher education, and the chance to enter a profession at a time when opportunities for women contracted in the secular realm. But longstanding saccharine and mocking portrayals of nuns in popular culture, such as in films like The Sound of Music and Sister Act, have contributed to the dismissal of nuns in the modern era as serious historical actors. Clichés of nuns are in fact linked to the women’s contested status in patriarchal Western society that expressed common Martina Cucchiara anxieties about women foregoing marriage and childbearing in favor of a life of public service in all-female communities.
