Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Summary This thesis investigates the hidden narratives of South African botanical images made in the late seventeenth to eighteenth century. Plant collecting and image making was part of early modernist scientific practice of collection and display. These images are examined from postmodern perspectives that treat them as "texts" that validated colonial botanical agendas. Botanical art objectified "nature" enforcing it into a textual code that sanitised it and made it suitable for study by Eurocentric natural philosophers. The impact of particular scientific agendas about "nature" can be linked to the stereotyping and subjugation of both indigenous knowledge systems and women. This thesis considers the impact that the complex historical and socio-political situations of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had to bear on the discursive formations associated with the botanical sciences, of which botanical art forms an integral part. The process whereby indigenous knowledge was effectively written out of acceptable botanical practice (a trend that persists today) is evaluated. I determine what the current negative stigmas associated with the art form are and conclude that artists and botanists working within the discipline do not acknowledge the limitations of the art form in reflecting empirical "truths" and this leads to the creation of images that rely on tradition rather than innovation. I discuss my practical work in relation to the ideas presented in this thesis. Bogenoemde tekeninge word vanuit 'n postmodernistiese oogpunt ondersoek as "tekste" wat gebruik is om koloniale botaniese agendas te staaf. Botaniese kuns het die "natuur" geobjektiveer en dit binne 'n tekstuele kode geplaas wat dit gesuiwer het en daarvan 'n toepaslike onderwerp vir studie deur Eurosentriese natuurfilosowe gemaak het. Die impak van spesifieke wetenskaplike agendas aangaande die "natuur" hou verband met die stereotipering en die onderdrukking van beide inheemse sisteme van kennis en vroue. Hierdie thesis ondersoek die impak wat die komplekse historiese en sosiopolitese toestande gedurende die sewentiende en agtiende eeue op die beredenering rondom botaniese wetenskappe, waarvan botaniese kuns 'n integrale deel uitmaak, gehad het. This study presents the first translation from Latin to English of the Linnaean disser- tation Mundus invisibilis or The Invisible World, submitted by Johannes Roos in 1769. The dissertation highlights Linnaeus’s conviction that infectious diseases could be transmitted by living organisms, too small to be seen. Biographies of Linnaeus often fail to mention that Linnaeus was correct in ascribing the cause of diseases such as measles, smallpox and syphilis to living organisms. The dissertation itself reviews the work of many microscopists, especially on zoophytes and insects, marvelling at the many unexpected discoveries. It then discusses and quotes at length the observations of Münchhausen suggesting that spores from fungi causing plant diseases germinate to produce animalcules, an observation that Linnaeus claimed to have confirmed. The dissertation then draws parallels between these findings and the conta- giousness of many human diseases, and urges further studies of this ‘invisible world’ since, as Roos avers, microscopic organisms may cause more destruction than occurs in all wars. Introduction Here we present the first translation from Latin to English of the Linnaean dissertation published in 1767 by Johannes Roos (1745–1828) entitled Dissertatio academica mundum invisibilem, breviter delineatura and republished by Carl Linnaeus (1707– 1778) several years later in the Amoenitates academicae under the title Mundus invisibi- lis or The Invisible World.1 Roos was a student of Linnaeus, and the dissertation is important in highlighting Linnaeus’s conviction that infectious diseases could be trans- mitted by living organisms.

This change took place over the course of the eighteenth century, when nature, from being conceived of as a settled state subject to cyclical change, came to be seen as mobile and mutable. The sense of a mobile, mutable nature--the dissertation's central trope--arose from the experience of travel and discovery, which was accompanied from the first by a vigorous process of transplantation. Plants and seeds were carried across oceans, having been dug up on one continent to be replanted often in another. From being static and predictable, plant life therefore became, for scholars and poets alike, dynamic, mutable, and adaptable. I focus on the writings of a small group of men in the Anglo-American world, including John and William Bartram, Peter Collinson, Alexander Garden, John Ellis, and Carl Linnaeus, who were engaged in the work of transporting, planting, writing about, and classifying botanical objects.

Some very important drug leads have been discovered from this genus, notably artemisinin, the well known anti-malarial drug isolated from the Chinese herb Artemisia annua. The genus is also known for its aromatic nature and hence research has been focussed on the chemical compositions of the volatile secondary metabolites obtained from various Artemisia species. In the southern African region, A. afra is one of the most popular and commonly used herbal medicines. It is used to treat various ailments ranging from coughs and colds to malaria and diabetes. Although it is one of the most popular local herbal medicines, only limited scientific research, mainly focussing on the volatile secondary metabolites content, has been conducted on this species. The aim of this review was therefore to collect all available scientific literature published on A. afra and combine it into this paper. In this review, a general overview will be given on the morphology, taxonomy and geographical distribution of A. afra. The major focus will however be on the secondary metabolites, mainly the volatile secondary metabolites, which have been identified from this species.

It is absent only from Antarctica. In southern Africa it is also one of the biggest families of flowering plants with about 246 genera and 2 300 species. Many of the species have economic value. They show remarkable variation in growth form and general morphology because they occur in so many different localities and habitats. Description Description Almost all the features generally occurring in plants, can be found in this family! There are annual, biennial or perennial herbs, dwarf shrubs, shrubs, a few trees, some scramblers and aquatics. Some are succulent, whereas while others are spiny and some have milky sap. Many perennial species are adapted to survive the cold, dry winter season of the highveld by underground storage organs and producing annual stems in spring. The leaves can be arranged alternately, opposite or whorled along the stem; sometimes they are situated at the base of the stem (radical and rosulate) or in groups. Some have a petiole while others are sessile. The leaves can be simple with smooth margins or the margins can be toothed, lobed or variously dissected to such an extent that the leaves are actually compound with numerous leaf segments. Many species in the karroo and fynbos vegetation have small, needle-like leaves to survive the hot, dry summer seasons. These leaves look almost like the leaves of the genus Erica , and are called ericoid.

Kamatou3 an aromatic shrub of the Asteraceae family endemic to the western and southern coastal region of South 1 Janneke M. Nortje1 Africa. The plant was described in this journal by Laidler in 1928 as ‘D/nhora buchu’, and is one of the Alvaro M. Viljoen3 important types of buchu used by the Nama people. We report the traditional medicinal uses among San Ben-Erik Van Wyk1 and Nama people, based on our interviews with rural participants. These include the treatment of colds, influenza, chest ailments and tuberculosis, as well as convulsions, haemorrhoids and inflammation of AFFILIATIONS: the neck. The Linnaean Collections Introduction In its creation the Linnaean methodology owes as much to Artedi as to Linneaus himself. So how did this come about? It was in the spring of 1729 when Linnaeus first met Artedi in Uppsala and they remained together for just over seven years. It was during this period that they not only became the closest of friends but also developed what was to become their modus operandi. Artedi was especially interested in natural history, mineralogy and chemistry; Linnaeus on the other hand was far more interested in botany. Thus it was at this point that they decided to split up the natural world between them. Artedi took the fishes, amphibia and reptiles, Linnaeus the plants, insects and birds and, while both agreed to work on the mammals, Linneaus obligingly gave over one plant family – the Umbelliforae – to Artedi “as he wanted to work out a new method of classifying them”.

    Joan Maetsuycker Joan (of Johan) Maetsuycker (Amsterdam, 14 oktober 1606 – Joan Maetsuycker Batavia, 4 januari[1] of 24 januari 1678) was 25 jaar lang, van 1653 tot 1678, gouverneur-generaal voor de Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, een record. Het overzeese rijk bloeide onder Maetsuyker, de enige katholiek onder de gouverneurs, maar hij had ook een grillig en onaangenaam karakter.[1][2] Biografie Maetsuycker kwam uit een katholiek gezin en studeerde rechten in Leuven. Hij liet zich inschrijven als advocaat bij het Hof van Holland en vestigde zich in Amsterdam. In 1636 zeilde hij naar Batavia en trad in dienst als pensionaris van de Raad van Justitie. In 1641 werd hij benoemd als raad-extraordinair en advocaat-fiscaal in de Raad van Indië. Antonie van Diemen droeg hem op alle plakkaten en verordeningen te verzamelen om daaruit de Statuten van Batavia, een wetboek voor Indië, samen te stellen. In 1644 viel hij Goa aan en in 1646 werd hij opnieuw naar Goa gestuurd om tot een wapenstilstand met de Gouverneur-generaal Joan Maetsuycker Portugezen te komen en tot een grensregeling op Ceylon. Als Geboren 14 oktober 1606 Amsterdam gouverneur van Ceylon sloot hij in 1649 een contract met de Overleden 24 januari 1678 sultan van Kandy, waarbij de VOC het kaneelmonopolie Batavia verkreeg. Hij had een voorkeur voor het Portugese systeem om Land/zijde Republiek der Zeven VOC-personeel met inlanders en halfbloeden te laten trouwen, Verenigde Nederlanden de zogenaamde burghers, die beter bestand waren tegen het Dienstjaren 1653-1678 klimaat en zich als middenstanders konden vestigen.[3] In 1650 Rang Gouverneur-generaal van de VOC werd hij benoemd als directeur-generaal van de handel.
