Previous meetings • Ari's sending-off for the visitors helped Dick Advocaat's Zenit fight back to hold Louis van Gaal's AZ to a 1-1 draw in Russia in the clubs' only previous meeting, in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage. • The teams for that game om 25 October 2007 were: Zenit: Čontofalský, Ding-Jin, Lombaerts*, Škrtel, Anyukov*, Šírl, Tymoshchuk, Zyryanov, Domínguez (Maksimov 81), Arshavin, Fatih Tekke. AZ: Waterman, Koenders, Jaliens, Donk, Opdam, Mendes (El Hamdaoui 59), Cziommer (Medunjanin 90+2), Agustien, Martens (Pocognoli 49), Dembélé, Ari. *registered to play for the club in this season's group stage • Zenit's record in five matches against Dutch sides is W3 D1 L1 (W2 D1 in St Petersburg); AZ's record against Russian opponents reads W2 D2 L3 (D2 L2 in Russia). Form guide • Zenit's matchday one tie was a classic: trailing 3-0 at Maccabi Tel-Aviv after 77 minutes, Mircea Lucescu's men managed to win 4-3, Luka Djordjević hitting the decider in added time. • A 2-1 home loss to Benfica in their most recent European home fixture – in last season's UEFA Champions League round of 16 – ended a seven-game unbeaten UEFA home run for Zenit (W6 D1). • AZ are now undefeated in six European outings (W3 D3) but their 1-1 draw with Dundalk on matchday one did not come without drama – midfielder Stijn Wuytens being taken to hospital with concussion after colliding with the visiting goalkeeper in the course of scoring AZ's goal. • UEFA Cup winners in 2008, Zenit have progressed in three of their four previous UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns. In 2010/11 they won all six group matches. • AZ have successfully navigated five of their eight previous UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns. Links and trivia • The journey from Alkmaar to St Petersburg is around 1,750km. • Zenit's Montenegrin forward Djordjević spent the 2013/14 season in the Netherlands, where he played for Twente. • AZ forward Robert Mühren is the nephew of former Netherlands duo Gerrie and Arnold Mühren; the latter lifted the UEFA Cup with Ipswich Town in 1981. The coaches • Mircea Lucescu took charge of Zenit this summer, the 71-year-old Romanian ending a 12-year spell at Shakhtar Donetsk in which he picked up eight Ukrainian titles and the 2008/09 UEFA Cup. He previously won Turkish championships with Beşiktaş and Galatasaray. • Lucescu is the most experienced coach in the 2016/17 competition; this will be his 216th UEFA club fixture. • AZ coach John van den Brom spent the bulk of his playing career as a midfielder for Vitesse, and was capped twice for his country. As a coach, he claimed the Belgian title with Anderlecht in 2013, taking command in Alkmaar in 2014. 2 FC Zenit - AZ Alkmaar Thursday 29 September 2016 - 21.05CET (22.05 local time) Match press kit Stadion Petrovskiy, St Petersburg Legend Competitions Club competitions National team competitions UCL: UEFA Champions League EURO: UEFA European Football Championship ECCC: European Champion Clubs' Cup WC: FIFA World Cup UEL: UEFA Europa League CONFCUP: FIFA Confederations Cup UCUP: UEFA Cup FRIE: Friendly internationals UCWC: UEFA Cup Winners' Cup U21FRIE: Under-21 friendly internationals SCUP: UEFA Super Cup U21: UEFA European Under-21 Championship UIC: UEFA Intertoto Cup U17: UEFA Under-17 Championship ICF: Inter-Cities Fairs Cup U16: UEFA European Under-16 Championship U19: UEFA Under-19 Championship U18: UEFA European Under-18 Championship WWC: FIFA Women's World Cup WEURO: UEFA European Women's Championship Competition stages Other abbreviations F: Final GS: Group stage (aet): After extra time pens: Penalties GS1: First group stage GS2: Second group stage No.: Number og: Own goal 3QR: Third qualifying round R1: First round ag: Match decided on away P: Penalty R2: Second round R3: Third round goals agg: Aggregate R4: Fourth round PR: Preliminary round Pld: Matches played AP: Appearances SF: Semi-finals QF: Quarter-finals Pos.: Position Comp.: Competition R16: round of 16 QR: Qualifying round Pts: Points D: Drawn R32: Round of 32 1QR: First qualifying round R: Sent off (straight red card) DoB: Date of birth 1st: first leg 2QR: Second qualifying Res.: Result ET: Extra Time round sg: Match decided by silver GA: Goals against 2nd: second leg FT: Final tournament goal t: Match decided by toss of a PO: Play-off ELITE: Elite round coin Rep: Replay 3rdPO: Third-place play-off GF: Goals for W: Won PO - FT: Play-off for Final GS-FT: Group stage – final gg: Match decided by golden Y: Booked Tournament tournament goal L: Lost Y/R: Sent off (two yellow Nat.: Nationality cards) N/A: Not applicable f: Match forfeited Statistics -: Denotes player substituted +: Denotes player introduced *: Denotes player sent off +/-: Denotes player introduced and substituted Squad list D: Disciplinary *: Misses next match if booked S: Suspended QUAL: All UEFA qualifiers UEL: Current season total UEFA Europa League appearances from the group stage onwards prior to the current matchday UEL: Total appearances in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final only UEFA: All-time total appearances in UEFA club competition including qualifying Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
