Yoshihisa Yamamoto* Scholasticism in Early Modern Japan
SCHOLASTICISM IN EARLY MODERN JAPAN Yoshihisa Yamamoto* Scholasticism in Early Modern Japan Abstract: In this article, the infl uence of Western scholasticism to Japan in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is portrayed in detail. The overview of the Japanese Christian literature is provided in the fi rst half of the article. The introduction of Christianity and scholasticism generated much tension between Western thought and traditional Japanese thought such as Buddhism, Shintoism and Confucianism. The structure of the dialogue between Western Christian culture and Japanese culture is analyzed in the latter half of the article by comparing the thought of Alessandro Valignano and Fabian Fukansai. The meeting of two cultures during the Christian Century in Japan gave rise to serious philosophical and theological problems which persist even until today. Keywords: Japanese Scholasticism, Christian Century in Japan, Jesuit Mission Press, Dialogue of Cultures, Alessandro Valignano, Francisco Xavier, Luis de Granada, Pedro Gómez, Fabian Fukansai. A estrutura dos diálogos entre a cultura cristã ocidental e a cultura japonesa é analisada na segunda parte do artigo, comparando-se o pensamento de Alessandro Valignano e * Associate Professor, Department of Advanced Social and International Studies, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo; 3-8-1 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153-8902 Japan. -

Ribeiro, A. (2001). -

Two connected phenomena were analysed: the structure of two elites merging in Rio de Janeiro when the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil in 1808, or rather, the court society that came to Brazil with the Portuguese king and the wealthy classes that financed the king’s stay in Brazil for thirteen years. Even though the importance of these events in the history of the two countries will not be analysed, this encounter leading to the Independence process some months after the king’s return to Portugal should always be kept in mind. Another aim of this research was the cultural codes that favoured communications between two distinct societies, or rather, between the court society and the working “capitalist” groups dedicated to down-to-earth mercantile strategies controlling the credit system, internal commerce and international slave trafficking to Brazil. -

The two decades of his rule marked the extension of Latin conquests in the east, most notably by the conquest of the important coastal cities of Arsulf, Acre, Caesarea, Beirut and Sidon. These vital ports for the early Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem provided outlets to the sea for commerce, as well as safe harbors for incoming assistance from the west. -
Evensong on the Death of Duke of Edinburgh
Lincoln Cathedral The Order for Evensong on the death of His Royal Highness, Philip Duke of Edinburgh 1 Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. 2 Welcome to Lincoln Cathedral Whether you are a visitor, a newcomer or a member of the regular cathedral community, we extend a welcome to you as we gather together before God in this ancient and holy place following the death of His Royal Highness, Philip Duke of Edinburgh. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Her Majesty the Queen on the news of the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Since the day of her coronation in 1953, when he knelt before her and was the first to swear allegiance, that he would be her “liege man of life and limb”, he has been a shining example of devotion and companionship. In Prince Philip, we witnessed the gift of grace expressed in love and duty, which has provided not only Queen Elizabeth, but also the nation, with strength and stability. We give thanks for his life and his unstinting service. We pray at this moment of great sorrow for the Royal Family and all who mourn, to know the consolation that the Lord is in our midst and turns the darkness of death into the dawn of new life, and the sorrow of parting into the joy of heaven. May he rest in peace. God of all mercy, justice and peace; Hear us now as we give thanks for a life of service and devotion to duty given to this nation by Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; May he rest in peace and know the joy of heaven: Be with those who mourn, and bring peace to the hearts of all; that we may all be united in the kingdom which is made known to us through Jesus Christ our Lord.
