ARNOLD’S DIFFICULTIES IN MAKING THE RIGHT DISCERNMENT CHAPTER 4: DISCERNMENT A RISK (Example: Fr. Arnold himself) CONCLUSION 1 INTRODUCTION Today we have come together for the first recollection day of this 2018 General chapter. And I was asked to speak to you about discernment in our founding generation. The way I understand this is to draw you into the discernment process of our founding generation in as much as this is possible. However, I have to narrow the topic down. I will concentrate on our founder, St. Arnold Janssen. And the reason for that is very simple. He saw himself as the God-chosen founder who had the task to lay the foundation of the SVD and SSpS with its two branches, the active and the contemplative one, and to do it so soundly that future generations could build on it. You will hear me speak mainly about our founder, but the other members of the founding generation are included; that follows from the way in which I collected my material: from letters he wrote to members of the founding generation: letters to superiors and individual members: these are letters published by Fr. Alt and the letters of the correspondence of Mothers Maria and Josepha with Fr. Arnold, published by Sr. Ortrud Stegmaier SSpS. I decided to let him speak as much as possible. In this short hour of reflection I intend to go about it in this way: I first invite you to reflect on the man Arnold Janssen - from the point of view of his own self- understanding. For this is the root of his way of doing discernment. After that I will look at the principles which he followed in the discernment process and which flowed out of his basic self- understanding. The principles are like a skeleton which has to receive flesh: that is, the words of Fr. Arnold and some other members of the founding generation which I bring as examples. CHAPTER 1: FR. ARNOLD’S BASIC SELF-UNDERSTANDING I want to describe Fr. Arnold’s basic self-understanding as consisting of various elements. The first and most fundamental element is Trinitarian. LOVED BY THE TRINITY – IN LOVE WITH THE TRINITY The first element of Arnold’s self-understanding I see indicated in his words: The Triune God tells us: Before the foundation of the world I have already chosen you and I loved you with never-ending love. Fr. Arnold was a man who knew himself loved by the Holy Triune God. To this divine love of the Blessed Trinity he answered with his own love for the Blessed Trinity which he expressed in different ways: * Together with John Baptist Anzer he committed himself to the missionary work of the new mission house in Steyl on June 16, 1876: with the words: Already truly prostrate before your face, for the increase of your honor and for the greater spread of your kingdom upon earth, in honor of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus and for the salvation of all souls we promise you the following: May the wishes of your most holy Son be mine and I will work as much as I can so that your holy gospel will be spread upon earth – I wish to be a servant of the Divine Word in the service of the King and Queen of the angels. Everything I do is to serve the Divine Word for the spread of his word; my tongue is to serve Your Divine Word. ** On October 3, 1887 Fr. Arnold dedicated himself to the Holy Spirit in the Vincentian Church in Vienna / Austria. About that dedication / consecration he said: “I have given myself completely to Him in body and soul as an offering, and I have asked Him for the grace to know the greatness of 2 His love, to live and die for Him alone. May He assist me to live in the world free from sin and to act according to the will of God in all perfection!” These two dedications / consecrations breathe the Ignatian spirit of magnanimity and generosity. Fr. Arnold now hoped that the members of St. Michael’s mission house (and after 1885 the members of the SVD and still later the members of the sisters’ congregation) would have that same generous spirit, and so the statutes of 1876 state: Our society is to be “a totally obedient instrument in God’s hand.” “The society must seek to die to its own will.” Such selfless, generous dedication to the Triune God is for the Desert Father Cassian the requirement for entering the process of discernment: for discernment requires a way of looking at life that is so selfless “that people participate in God’s way of looking at things and this way of looking increasingly becomes determinative for their life (in Kees Waijman, Spirituality, p. 496). Fr. Arnold fulfilled this requirement, because it “became almost natural for him to look upon things and events that entered his life from a supernatural viewpoint and then respond accordingly (Hermann Fischer, You are the Temple of the Holy Spirit, p. 14). And that, in turn, he was able to do because in the words of his secretary Fr. Hilger: “His whole life and labor were prayer. He was habitually in an attitude of prayer” (in Arnold Janssen, Yesterday and Today) An example of this is the Trinitarian quarter hour prayer with which he expressed his Trinitarian love every 15 minutes: “We love you with our whole heart.” And the last, but not least proof of his Trinitarian love and his identification with the Trinity is the name he gave to his congregation: Society of the Divine Word. The Divine Word is not only the book called Bible, but the Incarnate Word of the Father, the Son; the Word of the Son: the gospel; and the Word of the Holy Spirit: the whole Bible, the Word of the Prophets, apostles and priests, inasmuch as they wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. A man knowing himself loved by the Blessed Trinity and in love with the Blessed Trinity – that is the man who entered the process of discernment. And this man knew himself – and that is the second element - as THE GOD-CALLED FOUNDER Arnold’s first biographer Fr. Hermann Fischer writes: “He lived and worked in the strong conviction of his divine calling” (in Reuter, ibid., p. 36). God had given him the task to lay the foundation on which future generations of missionaries could still build. On May 14, 1902 he wrote to Sr. Walburgis, the first SSpS Superior in Brazil: he expected from her “to be faithful to Sr. Superior General and her successors, to his successors as SVD Superior General, and to him, Fr. Arnold, “who has been given the task by Divine Providence to found the congregation of the Sisters and to introduce them into their training and missionary work.” THE LOVING AND CONCERNED SPIRITUAL FATHER But he did not only understand himself as founder, he understood himself – and that is the third element - in a much deeper, more personal way: as spiritual father of the priests, brothers and sisters. To newly ordained priests he said: “God, the Lord, has made me the father of this community. My task is to promote the welfare of the Society”. 3 His discernment was always done with a view to the future well-being of his foundations and with a view to the personal well-being of his spiritual sons and daughters - exactly as a father should care for his children. OPEN TO GOD’S GRADUALLY UNFOLDING PROVIDENCE And last but not least we have to mention, as a fourth element, that Fr. Arnold was a man of unconditional faith and trust in God’s gradually, slowly unfolding guidance. That had an important influence on the time the discernment process could take - a long time. Fr. Arnold described this element in the second issue of his mission magazine “Kleiner-Herz- Jesu Bote” (Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart) with these words: It belongs necessarily to God’s guidance / providence that he reveals to us his intentions only gradually.

  • Spirituality of the Founding Generation
Arnold Janssen Spirituality Center 2005 The Spirituality of our Founding Generation By Sr. Franziska Carolina Rehbein SSpS, Dr. Theol. Preface: This paper considers only the spirituality of the founder and co-foundresses themselves, that is, the spirituality of St. Arnold Janssen, Bl. Helena Stollenwerk, Mother Maria, and the Servant of God Hendrina Stenmanns, Mother Josepha. It does not take into account other members of the founding generation whose life and witness, as well as their mission experience or ministry in the home country had a contributing influence on the spirituality at the beginning. Among those we would number: Mother Maria Michaele, co-foundress of the Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration, Bishop John Baptist Anzer, John Janssen, Brother Bernard, Nicolas Blum, Hermann Wegener, Hermann auf der Heide and numerous sisters, brothers and priests of the first generation. The reflections on St. Arnold Janssen have been drawn mainly from the book: Gripped by the Mystery – Arnold Janssen, Man of Prayer by Franziska C. Rehbein SSpS, published by Steyler Verlag, 2003, and the sources and references listed therein. Religious Background The religious background environment of Arnold Janssen and the founding generation takes us back to the mysticism of the Lower Rhineland. The blossoming of the “Devotio Moderna” deeply influenced Germany, especially the Lower Rhineland, the home area of Arnold Janssen and the co-foundresses of the religious-missionary congregations of Steyl. This nineteenth century spirituality was part of the so-called “modern spirituality” that was characterised by an affective and devotional nature. It was christocentric and trinitarian with an emphasis on the Incarnate Word.

  • Processie En Toeschouwers!
Kloosterplein 10 4512275 [email protected] 11e jrg.

  • A Word from the Provincial
A WORD FROM THE PROVINCIAL Dear Confreres, We have just finished the old year and find ourselves in a new year. This new year brings new hopes and dreams, or revives hopes and dreams that have faded away perhaps. This is good, from time to time we need to start anew. Our confreres are still sharing their Christmas and New Year joy. The German speaking confreres are having their party as I write these lines. Other groups have had or soon will have their parties and gatherings too. These events can encourage us on to do our best in this New Year. This Friday, as I write, January 15 we celebrate our Founder’s Feast Day. I hope all our communities and parishes will have something special to remember our Founder. Two weeks later we will celebrate the feast day of our first saintly missionary, Joseph Freinademetz. In the south we will also be celebrating Family Feast with our Holy Spirit Sisters at Madonna in Koforidua on the same day. All are invited. By now all of you should have received the resolutions, statements, etc. of the province chapter. We are still waiting to hear from Rome about our Vision and Mission Statements. It would be good for the various districts and houses to go through these documents in their meeting to see how they can be implemented. We were all shocked when we heard the news of Bishop Lucas Abadamloora’s death. It came just as we were about to begin our Christmas celebrations and festivities. We pray that the Good Lord has given him his well deserved reward.

The stories contained in this booklet are sto ries of faith, shared by the Sisters who wrote them. Each one was moved to see and feel God in her life in the story she tells. Gathered together, they form a series of pieces of the puzzle of God's gift of Mission, which God al lows each of us to share. We have shared these stories with each other. At that time, I had not known anything about our school because I moved to Akita only after university and I was working at a public high school. When I received the phone call, I was in a hurry to go out and I felt that it was a strange call. I never heard of a school named Holy Spirit. Also, I wondered how she knew my name. I immediately refused her request to work at her school. After I put down the phone, I felt uncomfortable and anxious about her. Then, I went out to meet my friends.

Edward Peklo, SVD Antiphons to Celebrate the Feasts and the Blessed History of Divine Word Missionaries Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters in _______________________ Techny, IL. USA -- Aug. 13, 1996 North America ________________________________ Edward Peklo, SVD Foreword n January of 1996 I had the privilege of being one of the North American delegates to the first SVD Pan American Zonal Formation Meeting, held in Santiago, Chile. At a gathering of zonal Novitiate Directors, John Ledwidge of Mexico, told us about his periodic use of quotes and sayings from Arnold Janssen as antiphons for Liturgy of the Hours, not unlike, for example, the antiphons for the Feast of St. Lawrence on Aug. 10. I decided this was something I wanted to introduce to the SVD/USA Novitiate Program, creating antiphons based on the life and spirituality of Arnold, but also Maria Helena Stollenwerk & Josepha Stenmanns, the co Foundresses of the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters and Mary Michael Toennies, co- Foundress of the Adoration Sisters. It is my hope that these antiphons represent the richness of the charisms inspired by the Holy Spirit and rooted in Arnold Janssen. The Steyl-USA Extended Spirituality Team also expressed an interest in this project and suggested it be shared with SVD/SSpS/SSpSAP communities in the USA. And so I offer this in that spirit. The feasts and remembered days chosen are based on the Calendar created for the SVD USA Centennial celebration: this project is for North America. But hopefully, wherever, it can serve as a model and resource for others creating something to celebrate their own local community and blessed history.
