Messan Kodjo Tettekpoe, SVD ~ Associate Pastor Parish Mission Statement e, the parishioners of St. Joseph the Worker, commit ourselves to developing a closer relationship with Jesus W Christ. We will joyfully celebrate Holy Mass and the sacraments and conduct our lives with the understanding that each of us is a temple of the Holy Spirit. We will increase our knowledge and practice of faith through study, word and action and help our families and others to do the same. We honor our namesake, St. Joseph the Worker, who is the pa- tron saint of the universal Catholic Church and all workers. Our outreach will be to believers, doubters and unbelievers alike as we are all children of God. We will be an inviting and hospitable parish open to all people at whatever level of faith. Though we are made up of many ethnic groups, each with its special identity, we are all united in service to Our Lord Jesus Christ. In 1875, during the height of European colonialism, Saint Arnold Janssen founded his missionary order, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), in Steyl, Netherlands. From humble beginnings, the SVD has grown into the largest international missionary congregation in the Catholic Church. After the two left, however, word spread that there was a His mission is Our mission German missionary society in Steyl, and candidates came in numbers. These would become integral to SVD spirituality and charism, and because of his devotion to the Word of God, Saint Arnold named his Coming to America missionary society, “Divine Word.” In 1895, Brother Wendelin Meyer, SVD, came to the Educated in math and science, Saint Arnold was United States, initially to sell subscriptions to SVD ordained in 1861 and became a teacher. Spiritu[lity ~ Ch[rism The Spirituality and the Charism of Divine Word Missionaries stem from the vision of Saint Arnold Janssen, a German priest who founded his missionary order in 1875. Broadly speaking, here are some insights. SVD Spirituality The spirituality of Christian religious congregations is based on an aspect of the life of Jesus, which they use to guide them as disciples and carry out His call to spread the Word of God. Some orders focus on Jesus as creator. Others fo- cus on Jesus as preacher or teacher. The SVD focuses on Jesus as missionary. God the Father sent Jesus to be a missionary among His children, to show us through His teaching and example, how to live our lives in righteousness, according to “...your light must shine before others, that they may see the Will of God. Jesus then sent forth his disciples—as your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” missionaries—to spread the Good News and to live their lives as His followers, as stated in Matthew 5:16. The missionary aspect of the Holy Spirit, which is always and everywhere on mission among us, is also important in SVD spirituality. As missionaries, members live out God’s call to follow in His footsteps, exemplifying His life, as His disciples. In this way, the SVD carries out His mission to spread the Word of God, which is reflected in this prayer by Saint Arnold Janssen: "May the darkness of sin and night of unbelief vanish before the light of the Word and the spirit of grace, and may the heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all. Amen" SVD Charism Quarter Hour Prayer The word “charism” comes from the Greek word charis, Our founder Arnold Jannsen wrote this prayer that one can which means grace.
