CLASSICAL AND FOLK DANCES IN INDIAN CULTURE Palkalai Chemmal Dr ANANDA BALAYOGI BHAVANANI Chairman: Yoganjali Natyalayam, Pondicherry. INTRODUCTION: Dance in India comprises the varied styles of dances and as with other aspects of Indian culture, different forms of dances originated in different parts of India, developed according to the local traditions and also imbibed elements from other parts of the country. These dance forms emerged from Indian traditions, epics and mythology. Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy for performing arts, recognizes eight distinctive traditional dances as Indian classical dances, which might have origin in religious activities of distant past. These are: Bharatanatyam- Tamil Nadu Kathak- Uttar Pradesh Kathakali- Kerala Kuchipudi- Andhra Pradesh Manipuri-Manipur Mohiniyattam-Kerala Odissi-Odisha Sattriya-Assam Folk dances are numerous in number and style, and vary according to the local tradition of the respective state, ethnic or geographic regions. Contemporary dances include refined and experimental fusions of classical, folk and Western forms. Dancing traditions of India have influence not only over the dances in the whole of South Asia, but on the dancing forms of South East Asia as well. In modern times, the presentation of Indian dance styles in films (Bollywood dancing) has exposed the range of dance in India to a global audience. In ancient India, dance was usually a functional activity dedicated to worship, entertainment or leisure. Dancers usually performed in temples, on festive occasions and seasonal harvests. Dance was performed on a regular basis before deities as a form of worship. Even in modern India, deities are invoked through religious folk dance forms from ancient times. -

The overlying aim of the ethnographic research will be to see whether blackness can be used as a unifier to those belonging to enslaved and indentured diasporas. Comparisons will be made between the two race models of the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean worlds. A substantial portion will be set aside for a critique of the concept of Coolitude including commentary on V.S. Naipaul. Further, mixing, creolization, spirituality and the cultural politics of Black Consciousness, multiculturalism, and dreadlocks will be exemplified as AfroAsian encounters. iii Acknowledgements Firstly, I like to thank all the people in the areas I conducted my fieldwork (South Africa especially). ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT 2016-2017 The South Zone Cultural Centre at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu was established as a Society under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, came into existence on 31st January 1986 with the objective to integrate people of India through Culture, art and heritage. The Centre has jurisdiction over the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Puducherry. During the year 2016-17 SZCC, in association with the Member States, has arranged around 169 programmes. More than 10,414 artistes from various parts of the country have been paid for their participation in various programmes conducted during the year. These programmes could be conducted successfully with the active participation and support of each Member State. Some of the programmes organised are highlighted below: ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE PROGRAMMES CONDUCTED DURING THE YEAR 2016-2017 During the Year 2016-17 the South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur has conducted 169 Cultural Programmes in which 10414 artistes have participated. The year 2019 marked another year of growth and progress and we proudly celebrated 42nd Anniversary on a grand scale. Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations were once again grand with thousands of people participating in all the functions and especially the Ratha Yãtra on the last day. Devi Navarãtri and Deepãvali Celebrations were just as grand. Several cultural programs were conducted in the last 6 months. Some of the highlights included ‘Dance Showcase’ presented by senior students of five dance teachers in the Auditorium. This was a grand and a successful program and funds raised were credited towards Kumbhãbhishekam 2020. Among a few others included celebrations of ‘Swami Vivekananda’s Legacy, Life and Influence’ on August 11th, 2019. Devi Navarãtri celebrations with Ras Garba on October 4th thru October 6th, 2019, Deepavãli celebrations for the Pãtašãla students in the Senior Center on October 19th and the celebrations at the Queens Museum on October 26th, and Anniversary celebrations of the Senior Program on October 12th with variety entertainment. All these celebrations were grand and very well participated. Annual Health Fair was conducted on July 14th and Mini Health Fair was organized on November 10th, 2019. -

South Asian dance encompasses dance forms originating from the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) and varies between classical and non-classical dance. The classical dance forms often described as Indian Classical Dance include Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam and Sattriya. Other dance forms include Kalaripayattu or Kalari and Chhau which are influenced by martial art. The non-classical dance are Bollywood dance and folk dances such as Bhangra, Garba, Kalbelia and Bihu dance. Bhangra refers to several types of dance originating from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent and it is a celebratory folk dance which welcomes the coming of spring, or Vaisakhi, as it is known. Bhangra dance is based on music from a dhol, folk singing, and the chimta (tongs with bells). The accompanying songs are small couplets written in the Punjabi language called bolis. -

Rasa and Garba in the Arts of Gujarat 1 Jyotindra Jain Rasa and garba are two interrelated and exceedingly popular forms of dance in Gujarat. The purpose of this article is not so much to trace the general chronology of rasa and garba from literary evidence as to examine the local Gujarati varieties of these dance forms in relation to their plastic and pictorial depictions. Literary sources, however graphic in description, do not always provide an accurate picture of the visual aspects of dance. Therefore rasa and garba as depicted in the visual arts of Gujarat might serve as a guide to an understanding of some features of these dances otherwise not easy to construe. Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan2 has given a sufficiently exhaustive and analytical account of rasa as described in the Harivamsha, Vishnu Purana, Shrimad Bhagavata and Brahma Vaivarta Purana as well as the commentaries of Nilakantha on the Puranas. Vasant Yamadagni3 and Ramanarayana Agrawal4 have published full-fledged monographs on the rasaleela of Vraja and other related subjects. The aspects covered by them will not be dealt with in this article. The descriptions of rasa in the Puranas make it clear that it is a circle-dance in which the participants move with hands interlocked. It appears that rasa included several types of circle-dances: ( 1) Those where several gopi-s formed a circle with Krishna in the centre; 5 (2) Those where Radha and Krishna danced as a pair together with other gopi-s or other pairs of gopa-s and gopi-s;6 (3) Those where Krishna multiplied himself and actually danced between two gopi-s thus forming a ring with one gopi and one Krishna.
