GIDDHA FOLK DANCE: AN EMBODIMENT OF HEALING THROUGH CREATIVE ARTISTIC PUNJABI DANCE CULTURE AND CONNECTION WITH SOMATIC DANCE THERAPY & PRACTICE Giddha is a form of folk dance from the land of five rivers called Punjab in North- Western part of India. So many rivers in one place signifying fertility and precious land for cultivation and farming. Punjabi culture is filled with vibrancy and fun loving loud people. They believe in expressing themselves with full power and intensity. Punjabi dances are based around energy and happiness. This form has freedom, expression, dramatic voice, facial and body dialoguing. It is a kinaesthetic, preoperceptive and muscular activity with elements of clapping and voicing emotions. It is an act of body, mind and emotions. Clapping helps to release toxins and also can be related to acupressure, as this triggers the points that effect major inner body organs. This form of movement exploration is therapeutic and has the ability to heal from a holistic perspective. Healing here is not when one goes into hospital and finds external source of therapy but from this perspective it simply means uniting the wholeness of being. This supports body, mind and spirit energy, bringing many people together to perform in a sacred circle; thus helping socialising to become artistic and motivational. It allows women of small knit family structures, villages and controlled environment societies to voice their inner feelings and releasing painful toxins through singing, dancing and bodily expression. It gives time to people to release everything in a joking fun loving manner and especially in a non- judgmental circle. -

Magnitude of Folk Performing Arts in the Life of the People of Kanyakumari District – a Case Study

Gomathavalli Assistant Professor, Department of History Government Arts and Science College, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari District, Tamilnadu, India-629504. Abstract This study attempts to analyse the importance of folk performing arts, which are the real modes of entertainment for folks and way of veneration of their deities, in the social life of people of Kanyakumari district. Villuppaatu (82%), kanuyankoothu (11%), Karagaattam 6%) and Kalialattam (1%) are very important in Hindu temples managed by villagers, of which villuppattu is inevitable in the temples of deities such as Mutharaman, Isakiyamman, Vaathai saami, Bathrakali amman, Boothathan sami, Pitchaikalasami and Aaldibothi, Kaniyankoothu is well-liked in Sudalaimadan temples, Karagaattam is a rule in some Mutharamman temples, Kalialaattam is austerely a mode of entertainment in the temple festivals irrespective of the deity. Villuppattu, Kaniyan koothu and Karaga attam seem to be inevitable in Hindu temples while Kaliyal attam has occupied a high place in the festivals of Christians as well as Hindu temples; the other folk performing arts are being executed during the cultural festivals and even temple festivals for entertainment. This paper presents the real situation of folk performing arts among the people of Kanyakumari district, at present, to reveal their social impacts, economic impacts and cultural impacts on different castes of people and the conditions of artisans in the society. 1 In general day to day life, if you describe someone as dynamic, you approve of them because they are full of energy or full of new and exciting ideas. The dynamic of a system or process is the force that causes it to change or progress. 'Dynamic' is used as an adjective, except when it means "motivating force", while 'dynamics' is always used as a noun meaning 'functioning' and 'development'. I think that, in the case of my research work, 'dynamics' is better suited than 'dynamic'. In contemporary India n society, a revitalisation of ‘traditional’ dances can be observed which manifests in the proliferation of dance schools and institutions, especially in urban areas. This revival was part of the drive, which has characterised India, to reconstruct itself after the traumatic colonial rule of 200 years. It was to create a new, unified nation that strives to be ‘modern’ and integrated into the global market economy. Here in the thesis I try to explore the repertoire and dynamics of one of the eight accepted classical dance styles, which is Bharatanatyam and its repertoire that is the Margam , as it embodies the new national identity. I have also tried looking into and pointing to the practices and views of gurus, teachers, scholars and dancers trained in the pre-colonial period and those from contemporary times with respect to the structure of the Margam . My research concentrates and is limited to looking and exploring the dynamics of changes in the format and structure of the Bharatanatyam Margam . The postures of classical dancer obey and follow strict rules established by tradition while following the mechanical rules of the body. -

Shri Shankardeva was a polymath, a saint, scholar, great poet, play Wright, social-religious reformer and a figure of importance in cultural and religious history of Assam and India. In the 15th and 16th century, the founder of Nava Vaishnavism Mahapurusha Shri Shankardeva created the beautiful dance form which is used in the act called the Ankiya Bhaona. 1 Today it is recognised as a prime Indian classical dance like the Bharatnatyam, Odishi, and Kathak etc. According to the Natya Shastra, and Abhinaya Darpan it is found that before Shankardeva's time i.e. in the 2nd century BC. Some traditional dances were performed in ancient Assam. Again in the Kalika Purana, which was written in the 11th century, we found that in that time also there were uses of songs, musical instruments and dance along with Mudras of 108 types. Those Mudras are used in the Ojha Pali dance and Satriya dance later as the “Nritya“ and “Nritya hasta”. Besides, we found proof that in the temples of ancient Assam, there were use of “Nati” and “Devadashi Nritya” to please God. -

Abrams, 1992) Indian philosophers and religious teachers have debated long and hard about the nature of the world and humanity's place in it; and different schools of thought have advanced different solutions to the problems of appearance and reality, good and evil, duty and desire, spirituality and sensuality . But all the competing formulations have at least two things in common: a belief in the underlying unity of existence and a determination to exclude no aspect of life in the search for the meaning of life. This insistence that all the pieces must ultimately fit together in a satisfying whole has shaped Hinduism's attitude toward the body. Far from being seen as an impediment to spiritual enlightenment, the body is treated as a tool for achieving greater insight and understanding. Is it any wonder that in India—where the gods dance—the dancing body can be both a source of pleasure and a vehicle of worship? Dance in India takes a bewildering variety of forms. Of these, two inparticular— bharata natyam and kathakali— exemplify the ways in which dance and religion intersect in Indian life.... Bharata natyam is a solo for a highly trained female dancer; it traces its origins to the devotional dances once performed within Hindu temples. ...The Natya Sastra (the Hindu tradition's "theatre manual") asserts that dance drama, properly performed, "emboldens the weak, energizes the heroic, enlightens the ignorant and imparts erudition to the scholars" by showing humanity and divinity as they really are.
