1.Worldview of Subaltern People

The Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, St. Xavier’s College (autonomous) have jointly organized six days National workshop on “Worldview of Subaltern People” from August 6 – 11, 2012. In the inaugural ceremony, Prof. Tho Paramasivan, Governing Council member, Tamil University, Tanjore, delivered keynote address while Prof. A Sivasubramanian, eminent Folklorist, delivered special address on the theme, “Research Areas and Subaltern History of Tamilnadu”. Rev. Fr. A Arockiyasamy SJ, Secretary, St. Xavier’s College, gave valedictory address on August 11, 2018.

2. Field Methodology and Ethnography

The Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, St. Xavier’s College (autonomous) have jointly organized five days State level workshop on “Field Methodology and Ethnography” from December 04 – 08, 2012. Dr. A Dhananjeyan, head and associate professor, Department of Folklore, SXC, introduced the workshop theme and keynote address while Rev. Fr. V Britto SJ, Rector, SXC institutions and Rev. Fr. A Arockiyasamy SJ, Secretary, St. Xavier’s College, felicitated the inaugural ceremony on December 4, 2012.

3. Colours: An Art Exhibition

The Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, St. Xavier’s College (autonomous) have jointly organized an art exhibition on the theme “Colours” during December 07 – 08, 2012. The exhibition curated the visual images of a young artist from Kilinochy, Sri Lanka, V Vasantharupan, who was also our student.

4. International Documentary Film Festival In association with Chithiramum Kaippazhakkam, Tirunelveli, the Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, St. Xavier’s College (autonomous) have jointly organized an International Documentary Film Festival on the theme “People and Traditions” during January 21 – 22, 2013 commemorating Century of Indian Cinema. In the inaugural ceremony, a monograph titled, Avanapadam, and penned by Dr. A Dhananjeyan, head and associate professor, Department of Folklore, SXC, was released by Mr S Tamilselvan, eminent writer and president, Tamilnadu progressive Writers Association while . Fr. V Britto SJ, Rector, SXC institutions, received the first copy of the book. Dr. Manivannan, writer Sivasankar, Prof. Bernard Chandra, Prof. Amalanathan, Prof. J Balasubramanian, Prof. Jaisakthivel, Prof. Radha, Shanthini Sara, research scholar, Prof. Purushothaman, Prof. Santhi have participated in the discussions. 5. Training in Folk Performing Art – Oyilattam 6. Naa Vaa Day Naa Vaa Day (commemorating the memory of N Vanamamalai) was celebrated at the department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, St. Xavier’s College (autonomous), Palayamkottai on February 01, 2013. While Mr. Krishnamurthy, Manager, zone, New Century Book House pvt Ltd, Chennai, inaugurated the event, Kalaimamani Kailasamurthy gave Oyilattam training to the participants. Later, Pon. Dhanasekaran, Joint Editor, Puthiya Thalaimurai Kalvi Magazine, gave a special address on “The first printed books in Tamil”. 7. Nattar Vazhakkatriyal Manavar Manram (Folklore Students’ Association) seminar Benzigar Lution, first year student, Department of Folklore, SXC gave a talk on “Christianity from the perspective of Subaltern People” as part of Manavar Manram seminar on February 19, 2013. 8. Nattar Vazhakkatriyal Manavar Manram (Folklore Students’ Association) seminar Mr. Chellapandian, Editor, Marramai magazine, gave a talk on “Proverbs – Psychoanalytical perspective” as part of Manavar Manram seminar on February 21, 2013. 9. Dyson, first year student, Department of Folklore, SXC gave a talk on “Folk Communicative Media” as part of Manavar Manram seminar on February 27, 2013. 10. Nattar Vazhakkatriyal Manavar Manram (Folklore Students’ Association) seminar Prof. V. Manickam, Head of the department of Tamil (retired), St. John’s College, Palayamkottai, gave a talk on the theme, “History and the Folk Ballads” while Dr. Dhananjeyan, head, Department of Folklore, SXC presided over the event held as part of the Manavar Manram Seminar on March 8, 2013. 11. Prof. SD Lourdu Endowment Lecture The department of Folklore has organized Prof. SD Lourdu Endowment Lecture on April 26, 2013. Prof. A Sivasubramanian, State President, Kalai Ilakkiya Perumandram, and Dr. K Palanivelu, Reader, department of Tamil, Periyar Government Arts College, Cuddalore, delivered the endowment lectures on the themes, “Material Culture in Socio-Cultural History Research” and “Mikhail Bakhtin and his World” respectively. A Arockiyasamy SJ, Secretary, St. Xavier’s College, felicitated the event while Dr. Dhananjeyan, head, Department of Folklore, SXC, and Dr N Ramachandran, Reader, Department of Folklore, SXC also participated in the event. 2013 – 2014 1.Folk Arts Training program The department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC has organized Folk Arts Training program to college students, from September 23 – 28, 2013. Mr. Prabanjan S Blachandran, Director, All India Radio, Tirunelveli and Mr. TT Ramesh Raja, founder, Mayan – Constructions, gave special address to the students while Rev. Fr. Danish Ponniah SJ, Rector, St. Xavier Institutions, Rev. Fr. Jesu Micheal Das, Secretary, SXC, and Rev. Dr. V Gilburt Camilus SJ, Principal, SXC, felicitated the event during the inaugural ceremony. Oyilattam artist Kalaimamani Kailasamurthy, Thappattam artist Anandh, artist Arulselvi, and Deverattam artist K Brahmagjanan Bharathi served as resource persons for the respective art forms. 2. Silver Jubilee Seminar on Folklore and Socio-cultural Values Folklore Resources & Research Centre, and the department of Folklore, have jointly organized Silver Jubilee Seminar on “Folklore and Socio-cultural Values” on March 15-16, 2014. Manavar Manram Inauguration Manavar Manram of the department of Folklore, SXC, was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. V Gilburt Camilus SJ, Principal, SXC, on August 27, 2014. Mr. Mujeeb Rahman, assistant professor, National Engineering College, Maruthakulam, , delivered a talk on the theme, “Deconstruction: Foucault, Derrida and Lacan”. 3. Manavar Manram Lecture Dr. Sathasivam, former Head and Professor, Department of History, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli delivered a lecture on the theme, “Oral History” as part of Manavar Manram on August 15, 2014. 4. Oyilattam Workshop Folklore Resources & Research Centre, and the Department of Folklore, SXC, have jointly organized a “Workshop on Oyilattam” by Kalaimamani Kailasamoorthy during October 06 – 10, 2014 for the college students. 5. Na Vaa Day Folklore Resources and Research Centre (FRRC) and the department of Folklore, SXC, have jointly organized Na Vaa Day, in association with New Century Book House Pvt Ltd, Tirunelveli, and Nellai Aivukuzhu, Palayamkottai, on February 09, 2015. Rev. Dr. V Gilburt Camilus SJ, Principal, SXC, presided over the event. Prior to the special lectures, two books – Suthanthira Sanganatham Subramaniya Siva siraivasam authored by S Diwan and Thudiyaana Saamikal written by N Ramachandran, were released. Dr. N Ramachandran, Head and associate professor, Department of Folklore, SXC delivered a lecture on the theme, Na Vanamamalai and Aaraichi Magazine while Dr. G Stephen, Head and Professor, Department of Tamil, MS University, Tirunelveli gave a talk on the theme, Indigenous technology and Science. Besides, Rev. Fr. Francis Jayapathy SJ, Rector, Loyola College, Chennai, spoke on the theme, Alcoholics Anonymous Movement from the perspective of Folklore discipline. 6. Workshop on Ancient Tamil Literary Tradition and Oral Tradition The department of Folklore and Folklore Resources and Research Centre (FRRC), SXC, jointly organized a workshop on Ancient Tamil Literary Tradition and Oral Tradition from February 16 to 25, 2015, with a generous grant from Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai. Dr. Aru Ramanathan, former Head and Professor, Department of Folklore, Tamil University, Tanjore, delivered keynote address while Rev. Fr. Jesu Micheal Das, Secretary, SXC, and Rev. Prof. SD Lourdu Endowment Lecture The department of Folklore has organized Prof. SD Lourdu Endowment Lecture on April 01, 2015. Dr. M Ramaswamy, former head and professor, Department of Drama, Tamil University, Tanjore, delivered the endowment lecture on the theme, “Folkloristic Elements in the Creation of Theatre.” Rev. Dr. V Gilburt Camilus SJ, Principal, SXC, presided over the event. 2015 – 2016 1.Thodar Maalai Koottam I Folklore Resources and Research Centre (FRRC) and the department of Folklore jointly started organizing evening lecture series for the scholars and general public of Tirunelveli district. On 29th June, 2015, Dr N.Deivasundaram, former Head and professor, Department of Linguistics, University of Madras, Chennai, inaugurated ‘Thodar maalai Koottam – 1’. In this inaugural evening lecture, Deivasundaram delivered a lecture on the theme, “Kanini Ariviyalum Tamizhum (Computer Science and Tamil)”. 2. Manavar Manram Inauguration The Association of the department of Folklore, SXC, was inaugurated on July 23, 2015 by Dr.V.Manickam, associate professor (retired), department of Tamil, St. John’s College, Palayamkottai. During his special address, Manickam delivered an elaborated lecture on “Historical Ballads” stressing the importance of historicity of ballads and methods of writing history from ballads. 3. Manavar Manram Field Trip to Keeladi Archeological Excavation site The Manavar Manram, Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, organized one-day field trip, jointly with Chitthiramum Kaippazhakkam, Tirunelveli to Keeladi near Madurai, on August 6, 2015, to observe and study the archeological excavation works carried out by Archeological Survey of India. 4. Thodar Maalai Koottam II Folklore Resources and Research Centre (FRRC) and the department Folklore, SXC, organized second evening lecture (ThodarmaalaiKoottam – 2) creating awareness programme about alcohol addiction on August 10, 2015. In this programme, Rev. Fr. Martin George, S. J., former director, Jesuit Ministry of De addiction Centre, Nagercoil gave a public lecture on the theme, “KudiNoi – KudiNoyaali” while Mrs.Spency, from Nagercoil, shared her personal experience about her husband, who was recently rehabilitated from addiction. 5. Thodar Maalai Koottam III Folklore Resources and Research Centre (FRRC) and the department Folklore, SXC, organized second evening lecture (ThodarmaalaiKoottam – 2) organized a special screening of documentary film as third evening programme on August 24, 2015. Dr.T.Paramasivan, former professor and head, Department of Tamil Studies, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, presided over ‘ThodarmaalaiKoottam – 3’ event. In this event, documentary film titled “Retracing Footsteps of Kannagi” was screened while Mr. K.T. Gandhirajan, film-maker, art-historian and director of the documentary film, shared his experience on unraveling the path of Kovalan and Kannaki. 6. Manavar Manram Screenings The Manavar Manram, Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, have jointly organized film screenings of two documentaries, ‘Painting by Kurumba Tribes’ and ‘Kattai Pommalaattam’ directed by artist Gita, on August 25, 2015. While artist and former Principal, Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, Chandru presided over the function and also initiated the discussion after the screening, Gita narrated her experience about the making of the documentaries and their socio-cultural milieu. Mr. K.T. Gandhirajan, film- maker and art-historian also participated and enriched the discussion. 7. Folk Performing Arts Training – Thappattam 8. Special Lecture cum Demonstration to School Students Department of Folklore, SXC, has organized a special lecture cum demonstration on ‘Folk Performing Arts’ to school students on 28thOctober, 2015. Rev. Dr. V. Britto, S. J., head and assistant professor, gave several sessions of lecture cum demonstrations to about 383 students. 9. Special Interactive session with Tho Pa and SN Nagarajan Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, have organized a special interactive dialogue session with eminent professor Tho Paramasivan, former professor and head, Department of Tamil Studies, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, and S.N. Nagarajan, a known social thinker, on 28thNovember, 2015. The dialogue between these two personalities, Tho.Paramasivan and S.N. Nagarajan, a known social thinker, covered various themes such as contemporary society, culture, politics, subaltern history and literary discourses. Various scholars such as Dr. K Sundar, Mr. VM Subagunarajan, Mr. Pon Chandran and others participated and assisted in coordinating the event. 10. Special Lecture Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, have organized a special lecture by Ms.Subashini, an archivist from Germany, on “Aavanakkappakamum Payanpadum”on December 17, 2015. 11. Thodar Maalai Koottam IV Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, have organized ‘ThodarmaalaikKoottam – 4’ on January 28, 2016 to pay tributes to Dr.Thamizhannal, noted Tamil scholar, Prof. S.Ramanujam, former head of the department, School of Drama, Tamil University, Tanjore, and Dr. K.A.Kunasekaran, head of the department, School of Performing Arts, University of Pondicherry, Puducherry, who passed away recently. Dr.A.Ramanathan, former professor and head of the department of Folklore, Tamil University, Tanjore, Mr.Purushothaman, noted artist, and Mr. Hameem Musthafa, joint secretary, Tamilnadu Kalai Ilakkiya Perumandram, shared their memories and mentioned the contributions of the late scholars and artists respectively. 12. Prof. SD Lourdu Endowment Lecture Department of Folklore, SXC, has organized Dr. S.D.Lourdu Endowment Memorial Lecture on March 1, 2016. Dr.Nirmal Selvamoni, Head (i/c) and associate professor, Department of English, Central University of , Tiruvarur, delivered the endowment lecture on “Ceyyuliyal Allathu Kalaiyiyal”. Rev. Fr. Danish Ponniah SJ, Rector, St. Xavier Institutions, and Rev. Dr. V Gilburt Camilus SJ, Principal, SXC, felicitated the event. 13. Naa.Vaa.Naal 2016– 2017 1. Manavar Mandram Inauguration The Department of Folklore, SXC, inaugurated the Manavar Mandram (the Association) with a special talk on ‘Lifestyle and Performing Arts of Fisherfolk of Uvari’ by Kaliyal artist, Kalaimamani Antonysamy, on July 22, 2016 at Folklore Resources and Research Centre (FRRC). 2. Manavar Mandram Lecture Manavar Mandram, the Department of Folklore, SXC, has organized a special talk by artist T Purushothaman on ‘Experience as an Artist’, on July 28, 2016. 3. Manavar Mandram Lecture Manavar Mandram, the Department of Folklore, SXC, has organized a special presentations, by our students, Felicita Sahaya Rani and P Mercy on the theme, ‘Social Change through Performing Arts’, on August 1, 2016. 4. National Workshop on ‘Socio-Cultural Meaning Systems of Subaltern People’ Folklore Resources and Research Centre (FRRC) and the Department of Folklore jointly organized a National Workshop on ‘Socio-Cultural Meaning Systems of Subaltern People’ during August 08 – 13, 2016. Manavar Mandram Lecture Manavar Mandram, the Department of Folklore, SXC, has organized a talk by Rev. Fr. Sahayaraj, SJ, Assistant Professor, Department of Folklore, on ‘Laudato Si’- Pope’s Feelings on Environmental Issues, on August 29, 2016. 6. Thodarmalai Koottam I Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research, SXC, jointly organized Thodarmalai Koottam – 1, on ‘New Education Policy’ by Dr R Murali, former Principal, Madura College, Madurai, on September 12, 2016. 7. Thodarmalai Koottam II – Documentary Film Screenings Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, jointly organized documentary Film screenings on December 12, 2016, as second Thodarmalai Koottam event. In this event, two documentaries, Dr. Shoemaker (directed by TJ Pandiaraj and Vinoth) and Saathikal Jaakkirathai (directed by TJ Pandiaraj and Vinoth) were screened with a discussion presided over by G Chandru, renowned Artist. Rev. Fr. V Britto SJ, Principal, SXC, felicitated the event. 8. National Seminar on ‘Ecological Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges for Tribal Development’ The Department of Folklore organized a National Seminar on ‘Ecological Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges for Tribal Development’ during December 16 – 17, 2016. 9. Manavar Mandram Lecture Manavar Mandram, the Department of Folklore, SXC, has organized a special talk by Puppeteer, Kalaimamani Muthumani Raju Rao, on ‘Experience as an Artist’, on December 22, 2016. 10. Special Lecture The Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, jointly organized two special lectures on Art History and Cultural Museum on January 3, 2017 by Mr. P Ahilan, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Jaffna, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. 11. Fieldwork I The Department of Folklore, SXC organized one day field trip to St Antony’s Shrine, Puliampatti, and Marugalthalai, Thoothukudi District, on January 10, 2017. 12. Folk Arts – Training Programme The Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, organized Folk Arts – Training Programme for first year PG students (of Folklore Department) during February 6 – 10, 2017 at Sakthi Folk Cultural Centre, K Pudur, Dindigul district. The students were given training in five art forms that include Paraiyattam, Oyilattam, Devarattam, Silambattam and Karagattam. 13. Dr SD Lourdu Memorial Endowment Lecture The Department of Folklore and FRRC jointly organized Dr SD Lourdu Memorial Endowment Lecture on March 6, 2017. Dr K Sundar, Assistant Professor, Department of Tamil, Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, Dindigul district, delivered the Memorial lecture on ‘Digression in Tamil Poetics.’ 14. Fieldwork II The Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, organized a field trip to observe ‘Terukoothu performance’ at Alaivaipatti, Rasipuram, Salem District, on March 11, 2017. The students from Department of Folklore, Kamaraj University, Madurai also join with our students. 15. Naa Vaa Day Folklore Resources & Research Centre and the Department of Folklore, SXC, organized Naa Vaa Naal on March 13, 2017. Dr S Pilavendiran, Associate Professor, Pondicherry Institute of Linguistics and Culture, Puducherry, delivered the Naa Vaa Naal lecture on ‘Liminal Objects and Animals.’ 16. Training on Folk Performing Arts of Tamilnadu The Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, jointly organized a training programme on Folk Performing Arts of Tamilnadu for Sri Lankan Tamil students, enrolled in Jesuit Colleges of Tamilnadu from May 15 – 22, 2017. About 25 students participated in this training programme. 2017– 2 018 1.Workshop on Writing Tamil Folklore Resources & Research Centre and the Department of Folklore, SXC, organized a special workshop on “Writing Tamil” from June 01 – 05, 2017 to the seminarians of Arul Kadal, Chennai. Dr. V Manickam, former associate professor, Department of Tamil, St. John’s College, Palayamkottai and Dr. N Ramachandran, Director, Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, served as resource persons. 2. Manavar Mandram Lecture Folklore Students’ Association, Manavar Manram, was inaugurated on July 10, 2017. While Rev. Dr.V.Britto, S.J., head of the department and Principal, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Palayamkottai, blessed the occasion with his inaugural address, Dr. A. Dhananjeyan, former head of the department of Folklore, SXC, delivered his special address on the topic, “The Relevance of Folklore Studies in Contemporary Socio-political contexts.” 3. Manavar Mandram Lecture On July 11, 2017, our alumni, S Dhanapal, Phd scholar, and V Naresh, M.Phil student, Centre for Tamil Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, shared their experiences of pursuing research in JNU. Dr. M. Arivalagan, also our alumnus and independent researcher also shared his research experience in Folklore studies. 4. Manavar Mandram Lecture On July 26, 2017, Manavar Manram organized a special lecture by Dr. N. Govindarajan, assistant professor, Department of Tamil, The American College (autonomous), Madurai on the theme, “Mikhail Bakhtin – Language and Linguistics.” 5. Manavar Mandram Lecture Dr. J. Raghu Antony, associate professor, department of English, VOC College, Thoothukudi, delivered a special lecture on “Edward Said and Orientalism”, as part of Mananvar Manram event on August 4, 2017. 6. Folk Arts Training programme Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, jointly organized Folk Arts Training programme to college students from August 18 – 28, 2017. The programme was supported by United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, New York, United States of America. About 50 students participated in the programme and they were given intensive training on five different art forms namely, Parai, Kavadi, Kaliyal, Oyil and Devarattam. 7. Birth Centenary of Prof. N Vanamamalai Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, jointly organized one day seminar, in association with Sahitya Akademi, Chennai, commemorating the Birth Centenary of Prof. N Vanamamalai, on August 24, 2017. 8. Manavar Mandram Lecture On September 12, 2017, Dr. N. Ramachandran, Director, Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, gave a special lecture on the theme, ‘Marxist Theory of Communication’. He also delivered another lecture on “Speech acts and Phonetics.” 9. Manavar Mandram Lecture Dr. A. Dhananjeyan, former Head, Department of Folklore, SXC, delivered a lecture on “Applied Folklore” on December 20, 2017. 10. Na Vaa Day Folklore Resources & Research Centre and the Department of Folklore, SXC, jointly organized on February 2, 2018 with a special lecture by Dr. R Kamarasu, assistant professor, department of Literature, Tamil University, Tanjore, delivered a lecture on “N Vanamamalai’s contribution to the field of Folkloristics.” 11. Special Programme on Folk Art and Artists The department of Folklore, SXC, organized one day event on, “Interactive Presentation and Review of State of Folk Arts and Artists in Tamilnadu” sponsored by Anthropological Survey of India, Mysuru, on March 1, 2018. 12. Seminar on Oral History Department of Folklore and Folklore Resources & Research Centre, SXC, jointly organized one day seminar on the theme, Oral History, on March 14, 2018. Dr. I Muthiah, former Head and Professor, Department of Folklore and Culture Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, delivered keynote address on the theme, “History of Subaltern People as expressed in Performance Forms.” Rev. Manavar Mandram Lecture On March 20, 2018, Dr. B Radha, assistant professor, department of Communication, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli delivered a lecture on the theme, ‘Media and Human Rights’. 14. Manavar Mandram Lecture On March 21, 2018, Mr. Rajan Doss, Phd Scholar, Department of Folklore, SXC, gave a lecture on “Traditional Water Management Systems.” 15. Dr SD Lourdu Memorial Endowment Lecture The Department of Folklore and FRRC jointly organized Dr SD Lourdu Memorial Endowment Lecture on March 27, 2018. Mr. Mohammed Safi, Clinical Psychologist & Assistant Professor, Theni Government Medical College Hospital, Theni, delivered the endowment lecture on the theme, Pschoanalysis and Tamil Cinema. Rev.
