CLASSICAL AND FOLK DANCES IN INDIAN CULTURE Palkalai Chemmal Dr ANANDA BALAYOGI BHAVANANI Chairman: Yoganjali Natyalayam, Pondicherry. INTRODUCTION: Dance in India comprises the varied styles of dances and as with other aspects of Indian culture, different forms of dances originated in different parts of India, developed according to the local traditions and also imbibed elements from other parts of the country. These dance forms emerged from Indian traditions, epics and mythology. Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy for performing arts, recognizes eight distinctive traditional dances as Indian classical dances, which might have origin in religious activities of distant past. These are: Bharatanatyam- Tamil Nadu Kathak- Uttar Pradesh Kathakali- Kerala Kuchipudi- Andhra Pradesh Manipuri-Manipur Mohiniyattam-Kerala Odissi-Odisha Sattriya-Assam Folk dances are numerous in number and style, and vary according to the local tradition of the respective state, ethnic or geographic regions. Contemporary dances include refined and experimental fusions of classical, folk and Western forms. Dancing traditions of India have influence not only over the dances in the whole of South Asia, but on the dancing forms of South East Asia as well. In modern times, the presentation of Indian dance styles in films (Bollywood dancing) has exposed the range of dance in India to a global audience. In ancient India, dance was usually a functional activity dedicated to worship, entertainment or leisure. Dancers usually performed in temples, on festive occasions and seasonal harvests. Dance was performed on a regular basis before deities as a form of worship. Even in modern India, deities are invoked through religious folk dance forms from ancient times. -

BHAGAVATA MELA DANCE-DRAMA OF BHARATA NATYA E. Krishna Iyer The classical dance-drama of the Bhagavata Mela tradition which is struggling for survival in the Tanjore District is a rare art of great value. Its revival will not only add one more rich variety to our existing dance arts but also help to clear away many prevailing misconceptions about Bharata Natya, by proving, that it is not confined to, or exhausted by, the solo Sadir-Natya of women and that it has a dramatic form too with many male and female characters expounding great Puranic themes and rasas other than Sringara as well. In short it will be found as an exemplifica tion of the 2000-year old conception of Natya as dance-drama according to the Natyasastra. Incidentally it may also prove the art to be a source of rich material to help the creation or evolution' of new forms of dance drama and ballet. Bharata Natya, properly understood, is a vast, comprehensive and generic system of classical dance in India, the principles and technique of which are closely applied to three chief forms among others namely; (1)the lyrical solo Sadir nautch, (2) the heavy Bhagavata Me/a dance-drama and (3) the light Kuravanji ballet. Of these, only the first has become widely popular and is called by the generic name itself. Abrams, 1992) Indian philosophers and religious teachers have debated long and hard about the nature of the world and humanity's place in it; and different schools of thought have advanced different solutions to the problems of appearance and reality, good and evil, duty and desire, spirituality and sensuality . But all the competing formulations have at least two things in common: a belief in the underlying unity of existence and a determination to exclude no aspect of life in the search for the meaning of life. This insistence that all the pieces must ultimately fit together in a satisfying whole has shaped Hinduism's attitude toward the body. Far from being seen as an impediment to spiritual enlightenment, the body is treated as a tool for achieving greater insight and understanding. Is it any wonder that in India—where the gods dance—the dancing body can be both a source of pleasure and a vehicle of worship? Dance in India takes a bewildering variety of forms. Of these, two inparticular— bharata natyam and kathakali— exemplify the ways in which dance and religion intersect in Indian life.... Bharata natyam is a solo for a highly trained female dancer; it traces its origins to the devotional dances once performed within Hindu temples. ...The Natya Sastra (the Hindu tradition's "theatre manual") asserts that dance drama, properly performed, "emboldens the weak, energizes the heroic, enlightens the ignorant and imparts erudition to the scholars" by showing humanity and divinity as they really are. -

Key Points 1/3 About: Kalbeliya dances are an expression of the Kalbelia community’s traditional way of life. It is associated with a Rajasthani tribe of the same name. It was included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in 2010. UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is made up of those intangible heritage elements that help demonstrate diversity of cultural heritage and raise awareness about its importance. It was established in 2008 when the Convention for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage came into effect. The dance form consists of swirling; graceful movements that make this dance a treat to behold. The movements associated with the Kalbelia also make it one of the most sensuous forms of folk dance in India. It is generally performed for any joyous celebration and is considered to be an integral part of the Kalbeliya culture. Another unique aspect of the Kalbelia dance is that it is only performed by women while the men play the instruments and provide the music. Instruments & Dress: Women in flowing black skirts dance and swirl, replicating the movements of a serpent, while men accompany them on the “khanjari” instrument and the "poongi", a woodwind instrument traditionally played to capture snakes. The dancers wear traditional tattoo designs, jewellery and garments richly embroidered with small mirrors and silver thread. Kalbeliya Songs: They disseminate mythological knowledge through stories. -

Creative Factors and Ethnic-folk Dance: A Case Study of the Peacock Dance in China (1949-2013) by Jiaying You A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ukrainian Folklore Departments of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies and Anthropology University of Alberta © Jiaying You, 2016 ii Abstract My dissertation topic focuses on the interaction between dances, their contexts, and their meanings. I am interested in a wide range of creative factors that are involved in the dance-context interaction. I chose to investigate these factors by looking at the Peacock Dance, which originates in the Dai culture. I write about eleven case studies and focus on four different creative factors that have changed the peacock dance - individual, community, nationality, and state. Creative factors are the factors that actively influence the form/context/meaning of an ethnic-folk dance in certain ways. I call these factors as “creative factors” because they influence the creation of new characteristics of the ethnic-folk dances. Various factors can influence change in ethnic-folk dances, and the ones I focus on are only four of many. Change in ethnic-folk dance usually happens under the influence of one or all four creative factors, though each factor may be more or less active. These case studies demonstrate how four creative factors have changed the peacock dance from the Dai ethnic group. Because of the absence of earlier detailed information, there is no original peacock dance to make comparisons in an absolute sense. I consider Dance #1, the peacock dance by Mao Xiang around 1949, as the “original” peacock dance in my dissertation. -
Why Kathak Dance?
Chapter -3 WHY KATHAK DANCE? KATHAK'S GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION 17 It has been discussed earlier, that there are seven classical dance forms in India, which are ancient, traditional and glorious as well. Nearly all of them have performed the same social functions for society. They have undergone changes according to social changes, 122 and today all of them are trying to survive as well as develop. They are also trying to restore their original purity of form. No doubt that these styles differ from one another in various aspects. The case of Kathak is entirely distinct in many ways. This form of Indian classical dance possesses some different characteristic features than others. And many of the aspects regarding Kathak can be studied sociologically. Ancient works on Hindu Natya originally described a Kathak as a storyteller who chants stanzas from the great epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. For the entertainment and the enjoyment of his listeners he adds appropriate explanatory gestures and movements. Later, these simple actions acquired a more definite form and were involved into a significant gesture language and choreographic form. This forms the basis of this dance form. Later it came to be known as Kathak. In course of time it became an elaborate art, rich in both the aspects of dancing Nritta (technical part or the pure dance) and Natya or abhinaya, which includes facial expressions and symbolic gestures to interpret the theme, it also includes bhavas and rasas (emotions and sentiments). Kathak dance has its origin in Uttar Pradesh, mainly in Lucknow, Ayodhya and Nathadwar. -

A sweeping look at the magnificence of the Indian women through the forms, characteristics, challenges and changes occurred and are still occurring in traditional dance, forms the theoretical and pictorial substance of this study. At one level, it is a historical compendium of classical dance, an exploration of its’ moods and majesty, an ode to its sublime aesthetics and at another level, it is a stunning scholarly portrayal of a pluralistic society teeming with feminine cultural vitality. Introduction According to Natyashastra or the treatise of Classical Dance “The Body should catch up to the tune, the hands must explain the meaning, the eyes must speak the emotion, and the feet must beat the time-measure” [1]. Bharatha’s Natyashastra which is popularly styled as Panchama Veda [2] speaks about 108 dance postures which constitute the basic structure of any classical dance and women whose mind as well as physic that is best suitable for this dance divine, naturally inclined towards dance from the inception of this universe. Women of India succeeded in developing an individual style which is a blend of the typical features of many Paramparas with the distinct stamp of their individuality. Basically, there are two types of dancing – Theatrical Dancing and then Social Dancing. -

Abstract- This study covers the evolution of Indian dance in the three periods, ancient, medieval and modern. Different types of dances came up with these periods due to social, political, cultural, economical change. The study will be specially conducted with fieldwork however; I would like to collect data from both primary and secondary sources. I will try to collect the data and the materials from monks and experts of this field and from some of the community leader and main persons of a community union or a community. Introduction- Indian dance has variety of colors. It was practiced as sacred in ancient time and gradually it passes different phases. The leading Indian scholar Kapila Vatsayan divided the history of dance into three or four periods. The first is the pre-historic or proto- historic period, this period carries the cave paintings, engravings. There are no literary records in this period. History starts with Vedas, which is in the second period. The second period may be considered from 2nd century B.C. to the 9th century A.D. Both those period are considered as Ancient period. The third period may be considered from the 10th or 11th to the 18th or 19th century A.D. This period include early medieval and late medieval period. And the forth period is from 18th or 19th century to the contemporary India which is called the modern period.
