Feminism, Technology and Cyborg's in Frank Herbert's Dune Women of the Future: Gender, Technology, and Cyborgs in Frank Herbert’s Dune Mémoire Carrie Lynn Evans Maîtrise en littératures d’expression anglaise Maître ès arts (M.A.) Québec, Canada © Carrie Lynn Evans, 2016 Résumé Cette thèse défend les mérites d’une lecture cyborgienne de l’œuvre de science- fiction de Frank Herbert, Dune, où la vision particulière des sciences et technologies nous permet d’interpréter plusieurs personnages en tant que réitération Nouvelle Vague du cyborg. Publié en 1965, Dune introduit des personnages féminins atypiques pour cette époque compte tenu de leurs attributs tels qu’une capacité intellectuelle accrue, une imposante puissance de combat et une immunité manifeste contre la faiblesse émotionnelle. Cependant, le roman reste ambivalent en ce qui concerne ces femmes : en dépit de leurs qualités admirables, elles sont d’autre part caractérisées par des stéréotypes régressifs, exposants une sexualité instinctive, qui les confinent tout au mieux aux rôles de mère, maitresse ou épouse. Finalement, dans le roman, elles finissent par jouer le rôle du méchant. Cette caractérisation se rapproche beaucoup de celle du cyborg femelle qui est d’usage courant dans les productions de science fiction pour le grand public des décennies plus récentes. Par conséquent, cette thèse défend qu’une lecture cyborgienne de Dune complète et accroisse une analyse sexospécifique, car cette approche comporte une théorisation essentielle des réactions à l’égard de la technologie qui, selon Evans, sont entretissées dans la réaction patriarcale de ce roman à l’égard des femmes. Bien que ces créatures fictives ne soient pas encore communes à l’époque de la rédaction de Dune, Jessica et certains autres personnages du roman peuvent néanmoins être considérés comme exemples primitifs des cyborgs, parce qu’ils incarnent la science et la technologie de leur culture et qu’ils possèdent d’autres éléments typiques du cyborg. L’hypothèse propose que la représentation des femmes dans Dune ne découle pas seulement de l’attrait pour le chauvinisme ou la misogynie, mais qu’elle est en fait grandement influencée par la peur de la technologie qui est transposée sur la femme comme c’est couramment le cas dans la littérature cyborg subséquente. Ainsi, ce roman annonce le futur sous-genre cyborg de la science-fiction. iii Abstract Evans argues for the merits of a cyborgian reading of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction novel, Dune, on the basis that the novel’s particular conception of science and technology allows many of the characters to be understood as New Wave iterations of the cyborg. First published in 1965, Dune includes female characters uncharacteristic for the genre during this period due to the degree of their intelligence, formidable fighting powers, and seeming freedom from emotional weakness. However, the novel is ambivalent about its super-women: despite their admirable qualities, they are otherwise depicted in retrogressive stereotypes, representing the instinctual sex, naturally best limited to roles of mothers, lovers, and wives; by the novel’s conclusion they are cast as villains. This particular characterization of women shares many qualities with the trope of the female cyborg that becomes common in mass media science fiction of later decades. Therefore, this thesis argues that a cyborgian reading of Dune complements and augments a gender analysis of the novel because this approach incorporates an essential theorization of the reactions to technology that, according to Evans, are interwoven into the novel’s patriarchal response to women. Although these fictional creatures were not yet common at the time of Dune’s writing, Jessica and other characters in the novel can be read nonetheless as early examples of cyborgs because they physically embody their culture’s science and technology, and are consistent with other important hallmarks of the figure. The argument is that Herbert’s depiction of women in Dune does not just arise from an appeal to male chauvinism and misogyny, but is, in fact, strongly influenced by a fear of technology that is projected onto women, as is commonly seen in later cyborg literature. It was barely dawn, and the two other members of her Council -- Tamalane and Bellonda -- showed impatience at the summons, even though Odrade had ordered breakfast served by her personal chef. "It isn't every woman who can preside at the birth of her own father," Odrade quipped when the others complained they had too many demands on their time to permit of "time-wasting nonsense." Only aged Tamalane showed sly amusement. Bellonda held her over-fleshed features expressionless, often her equivalent of a scowl. The Desire to Feed or the Desire to Be Fed?: The Entangled Relation Between Bloom and the Maternal ♣ Figure in Ulysses Tsung-huei Huang National Taiwan University Abstract The question as to whether Leopold Bloom, for all his gentleness and generosity, tends to have a biased conception of “woman” is a controversial one. Instead of charging Bloom with politically incorrect gender assumptions, this paper will argue that Bloom does not see all women through a distortional speculum. Woman’s role as a mother, for one thing, is far from being the target of Bloom’s disparagement. What significance does Bloom envisage in the maternal figure that prompts him to exempt the mother from the category of the threatening other? Seeking to penetrate into Bloom’s complicated relation with the maternal figure, this paper first sketches how Bloom shows his sympathy to- wards women whenever they are thought of as caretakers or murderers. I proceed to argue that his eagerness to identify with the mother can hardly escape our attention if we track Bloom’s desire to feed. Reading Bloom’s desire to feed from a psychoanalytic pers- pective, I demonstrate how this desire is entangled with womb envy and how Bloom’s own fantasy of becoming a mother can help him handle the trauma of losing his son. Further, I contend that Bloom’s identification with the mother is vindicated by his desire to be fed as well. The desire reveals Bloom’s underlying wish to be impregnated by the mother and thereby become a mother himself.

    The Dune Campaign, Chapter One Outline Introduction (2,200 words) This chapter begins with the introduction of the campaign to the GM. The entire thing is synopsized and advice is given on how to run things smoothly and generally do a good job. Sidebars and Adventurons are described. Then the adventure begins. The players have been dispatched, from Caladan, in the first wave of occupation. They sweep the Imperial Palace for spies and moles. They then greet the second wave and begin sweeping the city of Arrakeen for Harkonnen saboteurs. Finally the Duke and his family arrive while the players—following leads gathered in the first two parts—journey to the Shield Wall in pursuit of the leaders of the Harkonnen Underground. This outline presumes it’s possible for the characters to die over the course of the adventure. The threat of failure and death should be real. Dune is not a human- friendly setting. There are no clerics to raise you. Players who make it to the end feel as though their characters have survived an ordeal. They wonder if other players in other campaigns made it “this far.” Chapter One – Clearing The Way (19,800 words) Act One – Securing the Palace at Arrakeen (7,000 words) 1) Assignment (700 words) Here the players are introduced to each other and their masters. Selected because of their devotion to the Duke and their special skills, the players are essentially a commando squad. While each is only 1st level, each has special skills: Mentat, Bene Gesserit, Suk, Swordmaster, to allow Thufir to build a team that can serve House Atreides during its long rule of Dune.

Loren, Scott Abstract: Though the films of David Cronenberg might not always be concerned with gender froma social constructivist or performative perspective, I think one readily agrees with Linda Ruth Williams’ claim that “for Cronenberg, anatomy is anything but destiny”3. For decades, his characteristic mutations of gendered bodies have repeatedly accompanied the destabilization of fixed notions about gender. It seems that the most fixed notion of gender to be found in his work is that gender is mutable. Likethe physical boarders to bodies in his films, gender is repeatedly undone, constantly shifting, threatening to become something else. For Cronenberg, a perpetual undoing and rearticulation of gender raises the question of when a man becomes a man in a rather unconventional manner. His films initially encourage us to ask other questions, like: “When does a man become a walking, speaking anus?” (Naked Lunch); “when does a man become an insect?” (The Fly); “when does a man become a machine?” (Videodrome, The Fly, Crash, eXistenZ). Of course one would also have to ask: “When does a man become a woman?” (Crimes of the Future, M. Butterfly) “When is a man completely unable to enter manhood?” (Spider) “When is a man a monster?” and “Is a man ever ‘simply’ a man?” (most of his films). It seems that with the release of each new film, one must rearticulate inquiries into the staging of gender in Cronenberg’s work, which is precisely what I wish to do here.
