  • CLYDESDALE HORSES by Hunter Adair
A GUIDE TO THE COUNTRYSIDE: CLYDESDALE HORSES by Hunter Adair Clydesdale Horses There are now many more Clydesdale horses returning to the farms in the north of England and Scotland. Some farmers are buying horses to work, or for breeding, or just to have them as a hobby and for showing. There are a few farmers, throughout the whole country, who have never changed or mechanised their farms over the last fifty years or so. They have continued to work the land with horses of various breeds. Some farmers still only use horses on their farms, a practice that has been going on for centuries. Some farmers partly mechanised their farms when the use of tractors spread on British farms during the first World War, when the Fordson played a major part. The story of the A young boy holding his Father’s tractor started in America in 1889. Clydesdale horse in the farmyard Farmers who kept both tractor and horses, either maintained the horses for breeding or for the less heavier jobs on the farm. It’s a glorious site while travelling through the countryside to see a pair of Clydesdale horses ploughing a stubble field followed by scores of sea gulls hunting for mice and worms. I have many memories helping with the working, feeding and cleaning out of Clydesdale horses and getting to know the temperament of each individual horse on the farm. Like dogs, cattle or sheep, each Clydesdale horse is very different and each have their own characteristics and peculiarities. Can you help me cross this field? A pair of Clydesdale horses should be able to plough about one acre of land a day starting from about 8 o’clock in the morning till about 4 o’clock in the afternoon.

  • List of Horse Breeds 1 List of Horse Breeds
List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The breeds and types listed here are those that already have a Wikipedia article. For a more extensive list, see the List of all horse breeds in DAD-IS. Heavy or draft horse breeds For additional information, see horse breed, horse breeding and the individual articles listed below.

As is plainly obvious, our local shows and the Sydney Royal have been cancelled, as has the Annual Foal Show that was to be held in conjunction with the Hawkesbury Show. Workshops that were planned by your Committee are on hold also. Having endured the catastrophic bushfires, this current event has impacted severely on our activities and indeed our enthusiasm and ability to enjoy our events.

  • A Brief Overview of Draft Horse Numbers
A Brief Overview Of Draft Horse Numbers - by Merlin Ford I've spent a bit of time over the past couple of years thinking about the number of draft horses that are being bred at the current time. I decided that it might help to put together a summary of draft horse numbers for the past number of years, as well as a few from the current time – just to see where we really do stand. I want to start off by giving the first word to my old friend Eddie Arnold. It is now four years ago since Eddie passed away – just a few months shy of his 107th birthday. A very interesting man, his experience and memory regarding Clydesdale horses was second to none. I came across a letter of his the other day in which he said, “I went to the Brandon Winter Fair for the first time in 1923. There were 28 Clydesdale stallions in the aged class. The Three roan Belgian geldings owned by Harvey grand champion was Arnprior Emigrant, a good draft colt rising two years”. Osborn, Weyburn, SK in the 1960's. I don't suppose that there has been (or ever will be) a draft horse show in our time (World Shows included) where we will ever see 28 aged stallions in one class. Just below is a chart which shows when the different association's were formed. Association Year Formed Clydesdale Horse Association of Canada 1886 Canadian Shire Horse Association 1888 Canadian Percheron Association 1907 Canadian Belgian Draft Horse Breeders Association 1907 Canadian Suffolk Horse Society 1910 A note about the Suffolk stud book.
