    RULES OF THE CLYDESDALE HORSE SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND (INCORPORATED) 1.The name of the Society is “The Clydesdale Horse Society of New Zealand Incorporated.” 2.The Registered Office of the Society will be situated at such place in New Zealand as the Council may from time to time appoint. 3.The objects for which the Society is established are: OBJECTS 1.To maintain unimpaired the purity of the breed of horses, known as Clydesdale Horses, and to promote the breeding of these horses free from hereditary unsoundness as far as is practically possible. 2.To collect, verify, preserve and publish the pedigrees of the said horses and other useful information relating to them. 3.To promote the general interests of the breeders and owners of the said horses. 4.To investigate suspicious or doubtful pedigrees of the said horses and other alleged misrepresentations relating to them, and to publish the results of such investigations. 5.To purchase, take on lease, hire and otherwise acquire for the Society, houses, lands, goods, chattels and effects, and to sell, let, and otherwise dispose of the same. 6.To make by-laws for conducting the business and regulating the proceedings of the Society, and to enforce the same by fines or otherwise, provided the Registrar of the Incorporated Societies consents thereto in so far as his consent may be necessary. 7.To institute enquiries and to prosecute or defend legal or other proceedings relating to the said horses or to the Society. 8.To offer and grant prizes and premiums, and otherwise expend its funds in any such way as may be conducive to the advancement and improvement of the said breed of horses.

Placental weight was positively correlated with foal birth weight up to a threshold of 6.5 kg; above this, placental weight was not significantly associated with foal birth weight. Placental weight was assessed, including the amniotic membranes and umbilical cord as well as the allantochorion. Using path analysis, parity was positively associated with foal birth weight both directly and through increased placental weights, but age was not directly related to foal birth weight. Over the range of gestation lengths observed, gestation length was not significantly associated with foal birth weight. We conclude that, in populations represented by this study population, either placental weights up to 6.5 kg are rate-limiting for foal birth weight or placental weight increases with foal birth weight up to this threshold. However, further increases in placental weight are not associated with additional increases in foal birth weight.

    A GUIDE TO THE COUNTRYSIDE: CLYDESDALE HORSES by Hunter Adair Clydesdale Horses There are now many more Clydesdale horses returning to the farms in the north of England and Scotland. Some farmers are buying horses to work, or for breeding, or just to have them as a hobby and for showing. There are a few farmers, throughout the whole country, who have never changed or mechanised their farms over the last fifty years or so. They have continued to work the land with horses of various breeds. Some farmers still only use horses on their farms, a practice that has been going on for centuries. Some farmers partly mechanised their farms when the use of tractors spread on British farms during the first World War, when the Fordson played a major part.The story of the A young boy holding his Father’s tractor started in America in 1889. Clydesdale horse in the farmyard Farmers who kept both tractor and horses, either maintained the horses for breeding or for the less heavier jobs on the farm. It’s a glorious site while travelling through the countryside to see a pair of Clydesdale horses ploughing a stubble field followed by scores of sea gulls hunting for mice and worms. I have many memories helping with the working, feeding and cleaning out of Clydesdale horses and getting to know the temperament of each individual horse on the farm. Like dogs, cattle or sheep, each Clydesdale horse is very different and each have their own characteristics and peculiarities. Can you help me cross this field? A pair of Clydesdale horses should be able to plough about one acre of land a day starting from about 8 o’clock in the morning till about 4 o’clock in the afternoon.

    Purebred Dog Breeds into the Twenty-First Century: Achieving Genetic Health for Our Dogs BY JEFFREY BRAGG WHAT IS A CANINE BREED? What is a breed? To put the question more precisely, what are the necessary conditions that enable us to say with conviction, "this group of animals constitutes a distinct breed?" In the cynological world, three separate approaches combine to constitute canine breeds. Dogs are distinguished first by ancestry , all of the individuals descending from a particular founder group (and only from that group) being designated as a breed. Next they are distinguished by purpose or utility, some breeds existing for the purpose of hunting particular kinds of game,others for the performance of particular tasks in cooperation with their human masters, while yet others owe their existence simply to humankind's desire for animal companionship. Finally dogs are distinguished by typology , breed standards (whether written or unwritten) being used to describe and to recognize dogs of specific size, physical build, general appearance, shape of head, style of ears and tail, etc., which are said to be of the same breed owing to their similarity in the foregoing respects. The preceding statements are both obvious and known to all breeders and fanciers of the canine species. Nevertheless a correct and full understanding of these simple truisms is vital to the proper functioning of the entire canine fancy and to the health and well being of the animals which are the object of that fancy. It is my purpose in this brief to elucidate the interrelationship of the above three approaches, to demonstrate how distortions and misunderstandings of that interrelationship now threaten the health of all of our dogs and the very existence of the various canine breeds, and to propose reforms which will restore both balanced breed identity and genetic health to CKC breeds.

While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". So, for a bit of fun, we are running it as a Christmas Jumper Show, with no need to get your smart tweeds or collar and tie out, but can dress nice and cosily in your festive woollies. This is not compulory, but hope that many will enter into the festive spirit and a prize or rosette will be awarded to the judge’s choice of jumper in each class. As always we have tried to include classes for all types and breeds of horses and ponies, so there should be something for everyone. We haven’t reduced or deleted any classes from previous year’s schedules, but are aware that some sections and classes will have low or no entries, but we wish to make sure that every breed and type of every age has at least one class they are eligible for. Because we are only a couple of weeks away from 3 year olds officially becoming 4 year old we have added a few ridden classes to cater for true babies that are newly broken and could benefit from a really low-key outing Any horse/pony may enter more than class if eligible but only one class in each inhand section.
