    List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed".     The Fell Ponies of the English Landscape Fell Ponies in their natural habitat which demands hardiness! Photo by Sabine Hoff One of the few breeds of pony still running in semi-feral (wild) herds, Fell ponies derive their name from the landscape on which they survive. Named after the Norse word for "hill", the northern fells of England have been home to this type of pony for nearly 2000 years. Historically the breed originates from northern England and the Scottish border. The forts along Hadrian’s Wall were garrisoned for four centuries with Roman auxiliary troops. Roman military inscriptions show that French, Dutch, German, Polish, Spanish and eastern European cavalrymen were posted here to help maintain law and order, and with them came various foreign stallions native to the mercenaries’ homelands. These horses, ranging from slender Arab types to coarser Friesian workhorses, may well have been used both during and after the occupation to breed and produce an assortment of types in Romanized Britain. It's believed that crosses between these and the native Celtic pony have influenced many of some modern native breeds, including the Fell pony. Anything over 13.2 hands was not suited to the conditions on the Northern Fells and such larger animals could only survive with extra feeding. Despite being crossed with larger foreign stallions, natural selection stabilized the breed as a pony. The average size of a Fell is 13.2, with the maximum height being no more than 14 hands. The breed has four acceptable coat colors and is renowned for its silky leg feathering and profuse mane and tail.

THE ike many of the best pony breeds, the Dales Pony developed in the mountains and moors of Britain and Ireland. The nine British Native Pony breeds, romantically known as Mountain and Moorland or M&M ponies, are possessed of extraordinary strength. Fashioned by harsh and unforgiving environments, they are tough, sure-footed, with Lan inherent levelheadedness. While all of the M&M breeds, including the British Shetland, Connemara, Dartmoor, Exmoor,QUA Fell, Highland,RTER New Forest,LY and Welsh, are extraordinary animals, none are more PONYcommendable than the agile and talented Dales Pony. DALES PONY THE GREAT ALL-ROUNDER Story and photography by Kelly Davidson Dales Ponies were bred in the Yorkshire Dales of England in the 19th and early 20th centuries as pack ponies for the lead industry in the Pennine Mountains. As railways emerged and road systems improved, pack ponies were slowly phased out, but the Dales found a niche on the small farms in and around Yorkshire. With their unusual strength, and sensible natures, they offered great advantages to the small farmer and his family. In the early 1900’s, a Welsh Cob stallion named Comet was crossed to many high quality Dales mares, passing on a more free-moving shoulder and increased athleticism. The resulting stylish ponies, with their famous powerful and eye-catching trot, were unmatched in trotting races and provided a fashionable carriage drive into town for the family.

The breed originated in Kerry but it is now found all over Ireland. The numbers however are very low and the breed is still critically ▲ Photo: Liz Sugar endangered. It has a fine intelligent head with large kind eyes. It has a strong and well set on neck with a rounded shoulder and compact body. The pony is clean legged with very little feather to its heels. It has good bone, with short cannon bones, short pasterns and upright hooves. The Kerry Bog Pony is extremely hardy, resistant to many equine diseases with great powers of endurance. Its temperament and versatility make it an excellent children’s pony and it can be used ▲ Photo: Gay Keogh by adults for carriage driving and as a pack animal. Though an ancient breed it was only officially recognised by the Department of Agriculture and the European Union in 2004. Photo: Pascal Lando BREED STANDARD SIZE: This is a small pony evolved as such because of its use as a draught animal in the bogs of Kerry over the centuries. Thus, the height of the Kerry Bog pony is 102 cms - 117 cms for Stallions and Geldings and 102 cms - 112cms for Mares. COLOUR: Any strong whole colour is to be found, but colour is generally brown or brownish black and bay. Some chestnut, grey and dun colours are also to be found. COAT: The coat of the Kerry Bog Pony is long and dense and easily capable of withstanding harsh winter conditions without shelter.
