THE HEAVY HORSE FESTIVAL 2019 Double Shot Show FEATURING 2 AMAZING INTERNATIONAL JUDGES Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society WA Branch Proudly presents THE HEAVY HORSE FESTIVAL 2019 DOuble shot show FEATuRING 2 AMAZING INTERNATIONAL JuDGES April 6th & 7th at Murray Equestrian Centre JUDGES Mr Maurice Irvine & Dr Jutta Irvine Having still worked his family’s farm horse in the fields as a young boy Maurice was always passionate about draught horses but in particular Clydesdales and Shires. In the 1970s he established Tullymore Park Clydesdale Stud and went on to receive major awards at Royal shows for his Clydesdales. In the 1990s he imported Clydesdale stallions from Northern Ireland and Scotland; Vogie Designer was the first ever Clydesdale stallion to be imported from a Northern Irish stud directly to an Australian stud in 1994. After being on the federal CCHS judges panel for many years Maurice passed his judges assessment for the Shire Horse Society UK panel in 1999. He started his Shire breeding program with imported semen using it over selected Clydesdale mares of his stud, and imported Shire Horse stallion Arclid Adonis in 2003 who is still standing at stud. The first Shire at the stud was Tullymore Prelude Acacia by Nottage Trump Card (A.I.) out of Clydesdale mare Box Valley Nicole, foaled in January 2003, who became Champion Mare & Supreme Exhibit at the National Shire Horse Show at Moss Vale in 2009. Together with his wife Jutta, a highly respected international Shire Horse UK panel judge as well, they are breeding the finest Clydesdale and Shire Horses and outstanding show winners of both, the Clydesdale and the Shire Horse breed as well as of combined driving harness horses based on Australian and European bloodlines. The stud’s top three Shires include Tullymore Sir Lancealot, Tullymore Eugenie and Tullymore Sir William who all have done exceptionally well for Tullymore as well as for their consecutive owner, winning Royal Show and National Championships besides many regional show Championships and Supremes. The latest success for the stud’s breeding program and most memorable moment with our Shire Horses happened at the Sydney Royal Easter Show 2018 when Tullymore bred Shires took out all three major awards: Supreme Shire Exhibit & Champion Mare – Tullymore Eugenia (Owner C Lord & D Tiyce), Champion Stallion or Colt – Tullymore Sir Joseph Banks (Owner C & E Thomas, Darkmoor Shires), Best Shire Gelding – Tullymore Sir William (Owner C Lord & D Tiyce) DOGS – SORRY NO DOGS PLEASE. Richardson, S. Yorkshire, UK The Shire Horse is the most numerous and largest of the heavy horses found in Great Britain. The recognised colours in the breed are black, bay, brown and grey. The height of the stallions should be 17.2 hands at maturity with mares a hand smaller. However, many of the leading prizewinners are up to and over 18.00 hands. The characteristic of the Shire is the nice silky feather on the legs, obtained from crossing with Clydesdales in the early 50's to alleviate the grease problems in the older type Shire. More recently the market pressures are wanting white legs to make the best use of the action and presence of the breed in the show ring, particularly in turnout classes. The history of the breed goes back to the medieval "Great Horse" used in time of war to carry knights in armour weighing up to 400lbs.

  • CLYDESDALE HORSES by Hunter Adair
A GUIDE TO THE COUNTRYSIDE: CLYDESDALE HORSES by Hunter Adair Clydesdale Horses There are now many more Clydesdale horses returning to the farms in the north of England and Scotland. Some farmers are buying horses to work, or for breeding, or just to have them as a hobby and for showing. There are a few farmers, throughout the whole country, who have never changed or mechanised their farms over the last fifty years or so. They have continued to work the land with horses of various breeds. Some farmers still only use horses on their farms, a practice that has been going on for centuries. Some farmers partly mechanised their farms when the use of tractors spread on British farms during the first World War, when the Fordson played a major part. The story of the A young boy holding his Father’s tractor started in America in 1889. Clydesdale horse in the farmyard Farmers who kept both tractor and horses, either maintained the horses for breeding or for the less heavier jobs on the farm. It’s a glorious site while travelling through the countryside to see a pair of Clydesdale horses ploughing a stubble field followed by scores of sea gulls hunting for mice and worms. I have many memories helping with the working, feeding and cleaning out of Clydesdale horses and getting to know the temperament of each individual horse on the farm. Like dogs, cattle or sheep, each Clydesdale horse is very different and each have their own characteristics and peculiarities. Can you help me cross this field? A pair of Clydesdale horses should be able to plough about one acre of land a day starting from about 8 o’clock in the morning till about 4 o’clock in the afternoon.

  • List of Horse Breeds 1 List of Horse Breeds
List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The breeds and types listed here are those that already have a Wikipedia article. For a more extensive list, see the List of all horse breeds in DAD-IS. Heavy or draft horse breeds For additional information, see horse breed, horse breeding and the individual articles listed below.

  • Horse Breeds in Medieval Role-Playing Games
Horse Breeds in Medieval Role-playing Games Throughout the Middle Ages the horse was a powerful symbol of social differences but also a tool for the farmer, merchant and fighting classes. While the species varied considerably, as did their names, here is a summary of the main types encountered across Medieval Europe. Great Horse - largest (15-16 hands) and heaviest (1.5-2t) of horses, these giants were the only ones capable of bearing a knight in full plate armour. However such horses lacked speed and endurance. Thus they were usually reserved for tourneys and jousts. Modern equivalent would be a «shire horse». Mules - commonly used as a beast of burden (to carry heavy loads or pull wagons) but also occasionally as a mount. As mules are often both calmer and hardier than horses, they were particularly useful for strenuous support tasks, such as hauling supplies over difficult terrain. Hobby – a tall (13-14 hands) but lightweight horse which is quick and agile. Developed in Ireland from Spanish or Libyan (Barb) bloodstock. This type of quick and agile horse was popular for skirmishing, and was often ridden by light cavalry. Apparently capable of covering 60-70 miles a single day. Sumpter or packhorse - a small but heavier horse with excellent endurance. Used to carry baggage, this horse could be ridden albeit uncomfortably. The modern equivalent would be a “cob” (2-3 mark?). Rouncy - a smaller and well-rounded horse that was both good for riding and carrying baggage. Its widespread availability ensured it remained relatively affordable (10-20 marks?) compared to other types of steed.
