To this end, the Institute acquires and maintains authoritative collections of books, plant images, manuscripts, portraits and data files, and provides publications and other modes of information service. The Institute meets the reference needs of botanists, biologists, historians, conservationists, librarians, bibliographers and the public at large, especially those concerned with any aspect of the North American flora. ISSN: 2186-8476, ISSN: 2186-8468 Print Vol. 2 No. 2, June 2013 CARL PETER THUNBERG AND JAPANESE NATURAL HISTORY Bertil Nordenstam Department of Phanerogamic Botany, Swedish Museum of Natural History, Box 50007, SE-10405 Stockholm, SWEDEN. 1 [email protected] ABSTRACT Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) was the most famous of Linnaeus’s pupils and became known as the `Linnaeus of Japan`. However, he was a zoologist almost as much as a botanist and should be remembered also for his lasting contributions to zoology, especially entomology. He published about 160 zoological papers, 90 of which dealt with insects, and he described more than 1,500 new species of insects. One of his first scientific papers dealt with the new grasshopper genus Pneumora from South Africa. Thunberg’s insect collections amount to 36,000 specimens and are largely intact as today. He was also the author of several mammals, such as the Brown Hyaena, and a number of reptiles and fishes, including several new species from Japan. Linnaeus has been famed as ‘ Princeps botanicorum’ , and his perhaps most successful disciple, Carl Peter Thunberg (1743—1828; Fig. 1), has been named the ‘Father of South African Botany’ and also the ‘Linnaeus of Japan’. However, most of the Linnaean apostles, like Linnaeus himself, were medical doctors and zoologists as well – in fact they are better labeled as naturalists, or natural history scientists. Their academic positions were not in botany, but rather in medicine and botany, and similar combinations. -

Wege Western Australian Herbarium, Department of Environment and Conservation, Locked Bag 104, Bentley Delivery Centre, Western Australia 6983 Abstract An overview of the debate surrounding the correct generic name for the triggerplants (Stylidium Sw., Candollea Labill., Ventenatia Sm.; Stylidiaceae) is provided. The authorship of Stylidium and the four species published in Willdenow’s Species Plantarum in 1805 is here attributed to Swartz in Willdenow rather than Swartz ex Willdenow, since Willdenow clearly credits these taxa to Swartz; however, the month of publication of these taxa could not be verified. The nomenclatural implications of a publication date subsequent to that of Candollea, also published in 1805, are discussed. Stylidium graminifolium Sw., previously thought to be based on a gathering by Banks and Solander, is shown to be based on a collection by Dr John White, first Surgeon-General of New South Wales. The type of S. lineare Sw. was similarly collected by White. A revised type citation and synonymy are provided for both species and lectotypes selected for Stylidium graminifolium var. angustifolium Mildbr., Ventenatia major Sm. and V. minor Sm. Introduction The first known herbarium collections of the triggerplant genus Stylidium Sw. (Stylidiaceae) are those made by Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1770 during their momentous voyage of discovery under Captain Cook. They made collections of seven species, one from Botany Bay and the remainder at the Endeavour River, with Solander later giving these collections the manuscript name Lobeliastrum (Diment et al. -

Box 7, FI-00014 University of Helsinki, Finland. E-mail: [email protected] Dahl was the second Demonstrator in Botany (1786–1789) at Åbo Akademi. He died soon after arriving to Åbo (Turku), and his career here is poorly known. The main duty of demonstrators were to instruct medical students on the subject of medicinal plants. Dahl sent to Åbo a consider- able herbarium prior to his arrival. It included 6000 specimens, of which about 1000 had once belonged to Herbarium Linnaeanum, but donated to Claes Alströmer, Dahls employer at Alingsås, Christinedahl, Västra Götaland in Sweden. That herbarium, like all collections at Åbo, were al- most completely burn in 1827 in the Great Fire of Åbo. The number of exsisting specimens in Herbarium Dahlianum at University of Helsinki, Botanical Museum is 215. It includes specimens once owned by e.g. Pehr Kalm, Carl von Linné the Elder and Younger, Peter Simon Pallas, Carl Peter Thunberg and Martin Vahl. Pupulin* Abstract A leading authority in the taxonomy of the Orchidaceae, Olof S w a r t z contributed a large number o f taxa new to the Science from his joumey to the Caribbean in 1784—1786. Most of Swartz‘s collections are kept at the Regnellian Herbarium (part of Swedish Museum of Natural History), but duplicates of the materials he collected in the West Indies may be found today in several European herbaria, including the herbarium of Joseph Banks (now at the Brithish Museum), the herbarium of the Bergius Foundation in Stockholm, the Carl Peter Thunberg herbarium at the Uppsala University, and the herbarium of the Botanical Garden & Museum of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen. Less known is the rieh collection o f Swartz' type specimens conserved at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, which are incorporated in the herbarium of Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach. In view of the importance o f historic type material to provide nomenclature stability, mainly for what concems old binomials, and the ongoing effort to form a register of all the Caribbean taxa published by Swartz, an annotated catalogue of Swartz' type material at W is presented. -

E-mail: [email protected] Sahlberg was the temporary Demonstrator in Botany 1805–06, Demonstrator in Botany 1810–13, Associate Professor in Natural History and Museum Inspector 1813–16, temporary Professor in Natural History 1816–18, Professor 1818–1841 at old Åbo Akademi and at Imperial Alexander University of Finland. As a Demonstrator, his main duty was to instruct medical students on the subject of medicinal plants. In his research, he focused on insects, especially the Coleoptera. As a botanist, his major achievements were building the Herbarium and Botanic Garden, in two phases. Prior to the Great Fire of Åbo in 1827, he acted at old Åbo Akademi. During that period, he ac- quired an extensive collection to the Botanical Museum during his visits to Sweden in 1801 and 1806, and to St. Petersburg in 1813, and by exchange especially with Professors Olof Swartz and Carl Peter Thunberg. Travel to St. Petersburg was fruitful, 1 500 species of seeds, 240 roots and cut- tings was received to Åbo Botanic Garden. Those were arranged by Count Vladimir Grigorievich Orlow, botanist Christian Friedrich Stephan, gardeners Johann Peter Buek and Jason Petrow in St. Petersburg, and probably by Count Alexei Razumovsky and Professor von Fischer in Moskow.
