AURAICA Vol. 1, 2008: 93–100 Scripta a Societate Porthan edita Carl von Linnén merkitys biologian ja erityisesti Suomen biologian kehitykselle Petter Portin Kaikkien aikojen merkittävimmän kasvitieteilijän, Pohjoismaiden suurimman biologin, ruotsalaisen Carl von Linnén (1707–78) merkitys biologian yleiselle kehitykselle on erittäin merkittävä. Hän on ainoa 1700-luvulla vaikuttanut luonnontieteilijä, joka edelleen on maailmankuulu ja jonka työn arvo on selvästi havaittavissa vielä tänä päivänä. Linnén merkitys biologian kehitykselle on suunnattoman suuri kahdesta painavasta syystä. Ensinnäkin Linné on eliöiden luokitteluopin eli taksonomian isä. Hän kuvasi, nimesi ja järjesti valtavan määrän kasveja ja eläimiä. Taksonomia sinänsä on ensiarvoisen tärkeää biologisen luonnon lähes rajattoman moninaisuuden hallitse- miseksi. Lisäksi, vaikka Linnén itse ajattelikin, että lajeja on niin paljon kuin Luoja niitä alussa loi, hänen luomansa eliöiden hierarkkinen luokittelu avasi tietä evoluutioteorialle, mikä teoria puolestaan tärkein biologiaan yhtenäistävä teoria. Usein siteeratun lauseen mukaan biologiassa mikään ei käy järkeen muuten kuin evoluution valossa. Toinen Linnén suuri idea ja tärkeä uudistus on eliöiden niin sanottu binomiaalinimistö, jonka mukaan jokaisella kasvilla ja eläimellä on suku- ja lajinimestä koostuva kaksiosainen tieteellinen nimi. Cavanilles’ detailed illustrations established the dahlia in the botanical taxonomy In 1796, the third volume of “Icones” introduced two more dahlia species, named D. coccinea and D. rosea. They also were initially thought to be sunflowers and had been brought to Spain as part of the Alejandro Malaspina/Luis Neé expedition. More than 600 drawings brought the plant collection to light. Cavanilles, whose extensive correspondence included many of Europe’s leading botanists, began to develop a following far greater than his title of “sacerdote” (priest, in French Abbé) ever would have offered. The A. J. Cavanilles archives of the present‐day Royal Botanical Garden hold the botanist’s sizable oeu‐ vre, along with moren tha 1,300 letters, many dissertations, studies, and drawings. In time, Cavanilles achieved another goal: in 1801, he was finally appointed professor and director of the garden. Regrettably, he died in Madrid on May 10, 1804. The Cavanillesia, a tree from Central America, was later named for this famousMaterial Spanish scientist. ANDERS DAHL The lives of Dahl and his Spanish ‘godfather’ could not have been any more different. Born March 17,1751, in Varnhem town (Västergötland), this Swedish botanist struggled with health and financial hardship throughout his short life. While attending school in Skara, he and several teenage friends with scientific bent founded the “Swedish Topographic Society of Skara” and sought to catalogue the natural world of their community. With his preacher father’s support, the young Dahl enrolled on April 3, 1770, at Uppsala University in medicine, and he soon became one of Carl Linnaeus’ students. -

Editorial The Bicentenary Scientific Programme got off to a good start on 2 April when the Phytochemical Society joined with us to study the Euphorbiales. In the next twelve months there will be a further six Bicentenary joint meetings. In addition to listing them under the Meetings section of The Linnean, each meeting will be separately announced by means of a coloured insert. These inserts also serve as booking forms and it is essential to complete and return them by the date indicated if you wish to attend particular meetings. The picture quiz proved a great success with most of you getting ‘Squire’ (Charles Davies Sherborn), the author of Index Animalium. Index Animalium ( 1922-1 933) is an exhaustive index of all the scientific names that had been applied to animals since the time of Linnaeus. It starts with the tenth edition of Systema Naturae 1758 and covers the period up to 1850, giving, for each name, the exact date and place of publication. In this day of word processors and data-bases it is interesting to note that the Index contains some 440 000 references, and that in the first year of his task (1890) Squire indexed over 500 volumes and recorded in duplicate a total of 40000 genera and species using only a pencil and slips of card measuring 127 x 63 mm. -

Anders Adolf Retzius Anders Adolf Retzius (* 13. Oktober 1796 in Lund; † 18. April 1860 in Stockholm) war ein schwedischer Anatom und Anthropologe. Während seines Medizinstudiums in Lund und Kopenhagen stand er unter dem Einfluss des Anatomen Arvid Henrik Florman (1761–1840), der ihn in die Methoden der Präparation einführte. Im Jahre 1816 verbrachte Retzius ein Studienjahr in Kopenhagen und befreundete sich mit dem Anatomen Ludwig Levin Jacobson (1783–1843), dem Physiker Hans Christian Ørsted (1777–1851) und dem Zoologen Johan Christopher Hagemann Reinhardt (1776–1845). Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Lund beendete er dort sein Medizinstudium. 1817 erhielt er das Medizin licentiat und wurde 1818 zum kirurgie magister ernannt. 1819 legte er seine Dissertation über die Anatomie der Knorpelfische (Katzenhai) vor (Observationes in anatomiam chondropterygium praecipue Squali et rajae generum). Retzius diente als Militärarzt, zuerst in Schonen, später in Jämtland. 1823, vier Jahre nach seinem Doktorat, wurde Retzius Professor für Veterinärmedizin am Veterinär-Institut in Stockholm, wo er ein Anatomisches Museum gründete. Seit 1824 war er Lehrer der Anatomie am Karolinska-Institut, 1824 stellvertretender Professor (1830 zugleich Inspektor), das er als ordentlicher Professor der Anatomie von 1840 bis zu seinem Tode am 18. April 1860 leitete. Anders Retzius heiratete 1835; seine zweite Frau, die Mutter von Magnus Gustaf Retzius (1842–1919), war Emilia Sofia Wahlberg, eine Schwester des Botanikers und Entomologen Peter Fredrik Wahlberg (1800–1877). -

Elias Magnus Fries och Carl Adolph Agardh om vetenskaplig metodik och möjligheten att konstruera ett naturligt system inom botaniken Lunds universitet Magnus Krook Språk- och litteraturcentrum Magisteruppsats LATM04 Lund 2014 Handledare: Professor Arne Jönsson Abstract Kring sekelskiftet 1800 dominerades den svenska botaniska forskningen av Carl von Linnés vetenskapliga gärning som hos hans omedelbara efterföljare stelnat i ortodoxi och brist på kreativitet. Den från Tyskland emanerande romantiska naturfilosofin med Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling som förgrundsgestalt gav efterhand avtryck även inom den svenska naturvetenskapen. Botanikerna Carl Adolph Agardh (1785-1859) och Elias Magnus Fries (1794-1878) var båda djupt påverkade av den romantiska filosofin i sina vetenskapliga arbeten. En av romantikens centrala idéer var att det bakom de olika naturalstrens mångfald fanns en enhet för naturforskaren att upptäcka, och både Agardh och Fries omfattade denna tanke fullt ut. Agardh var huvudsakligen specialiserad på alger, Fries ägnade sig åt svampar och lavar. Linné hade åstadkommit ett artificiellt system för växterna som fått stor spridning, men hans ouppfyllda mål var att upprätta ett naturligt system. Agardh och Fries tog vid där Linné slutade. Med utgångspunkt från den romantiska filosofin angriper de växtvärldens systematisering från var sin ände. Fries börjar med de högst utvecklade växterna och arbetar sig nedåt. Genom en strikt logisk metod delar han in växtvärlden i allt mindre enheter. Agardh avvisar däremot logikens användning inom biologin. Han utgår från de lägst utvecklade växterna och arbetar sig uppåt, en process där de empiriska erfarenheterna bit för bit fogas samman till en helhet. Agardh och Fries företrädde utvecklingstankar som stod i stark motsättning till den moderna evolutionsteorin. -

Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie The Society is a relatively late addition to a series of German societies of science and medicine that began with the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften”, Annals of the History founded in 1910 by Leipzig University‘s Karl Sudhoff (1853-1938), who wrote: “We want to establish a ‘German’ society in order to gather Ger- and Philosophy of Biology man-speaking historians together in our special disciplines so that they form the core of an international society…”. Yet Sudhoff, at this Volume 17 (2012) time of burgeoning academic internationalism, was “quite willing” to accommodate the wishes of a number of founding members and formerly Jahrbuch für “drop the word German in the title of the Society and have it merge Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie with an international society”. The founding and naming of the Society at that time derived from a specifi c set of histori- cal circumstances, and the same was true some 80 years lat- er when in 1991, in the wake of German reunifi cation, the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie” was founded. From the start, the Society has been committed to bringing stud- ies in the history and philosophy of biology to a wide audience, us- ing for this purpose its Jahrbuch für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie.
