Editorial The Bicentenary Scientific Programme got off to a good start on 2 April when the Phytochemical Society joined with us to study the Euphorbiales. In the next twelve months there will be a further six Bicentenary joint meetings. In addition to listing them under the Meetings section of The Linnean, each meeting will be separately announced by means of a coloured insert. These inserts also serve as booking forms and it is essential to complete and return them by the date indicated if you wish to attend particular meetings. The picture quiz proved a great success with most of you getting ‘Squire’ (Charles Davies Sherborn), the author of Index Animalium. Index Animalium ( 1922-1 933) is an exhaustive index of all the scientific names that had been applied to animals since the time of Linnaeus. It starts with the tenth edition of Systema Naturae 1758 and covers the period up to 1850, giving, for each name, the exact date and place of publication. In this day of word processors and data-bases it is interesting to note that the Index contains some 440 000 references, and that in the first year of his task (1890) Squire indexed over 500 volumes and recorded in duplicate a total of 40000 genera and species using only a pencil and slips of card measuring 127 x 63 mm. -

The Tasmanian lichen collection of John Shirley (1849-1922) (housed in the Queensland Herharium) is examined and re-determined. Two new comhinations, Rinodina 11sperat11 (Shirley) Kantvilas and P_1Tcn11/a ga!aoina (Shirley) Kantvilas, are proposed, and lectotypes are set up for Bacidia weymouthii (Shirley) Zahlbr. and Pyrenu/a ch/oroplaca Shirley from authentic material. Several lichen records are based on misidentifications and are deleted from the checklist of Tasmanian lichens. Key Words: Shirley, lichens, Tasmania. Wiesława Czyżewskiego” nature reserve were studied in 2005 and 2011. Within the examined area, 103 species of lichens were ob- served. These include 23 species that are new to this area, some of them calciphilous, e.g. Agonima gelatinosa and Collema crispum. Many of them are rare in the Polish lowlands, e.g. Cladonia stellaris, Rhizocarpon geographicum, R. polycarpum, Stereocaulon condensatum, and S. incrustatum. Sykes Received: 16 July 2016; Accepted: 3 January 2017; Published: 10 January 2017 Abstract: Modernity does not possess a monopoly on mass incarceration, population fears, forced migration, famine, or climatic change. Indeed, contemporary and early modern concerns over these matters have extended interests in Thomas Malthus. Yet, despite extensive research on population issues, little work explicates the genesis of population knowledge production or how the process of intellectual transfer occurred during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This paper examines the Delessert network’s instrumental role in cultivating, curating, and circulating knowledge that popularized Malthusian population theory, including the theory’s constitutive elements of political economy, philanthropy, industry, agriculture, and botany. I show how deviant, nonconformist groups suffered forced migration for their political philosophy, particularly during the revolutionary 1790s, resulting in their imprisonment and migration to America. A consequence of these social shifts was the diffusion and dissemination of population theory—as a pursuit of scientific knowledge and exploration—across both sides of the Atlantic. By focusing on the Delesserts and their social network, I find that a byproduct of inter and intra continental migration among European elites was a knowledge exchange that stimulated Malthus’s thesis on population and Genevan Augustin Pyramus Candolle’s research on botany, ultimately culminating in Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection and human evolution. -
