On the night before our wedding, the lobby bar of the Square Nine hotel was bathed in a marmalade lamplight, as if time were suspended. I still recall the bear hugs of my arriving friends, coats slapped, hands warmed with foam-clouded hot chocolates; the glorious mayhem that followed. Later that evening, at the Tri Sešira, a 19th-century tavern in bohemian Skadarlija, wooden boards descended as if from the air, piled high with mountain cheeses, kajmak (the love child of butter and clotted cream) and processional meats with dense cuts of pork and lamb. The home-cooked scents wrapped themselves around us, as did a ragtag of gypsy musicians, ever more raucous, on beaten-up accordions and guitars. The Serbian capital isn’t a showstopper; it didn’t grab me by the heartstrings the first time I arrived here as a reporter 15 years ago. But over years of returning, the things that failed to charm me before – things I simply couldn’t understand – now make me wonder how I ever lived without them. -

Activities in Belgrade Sights to see 1. Belgrade Fortress (Kalemegdan Park) The number one must-see location in the city. Some 115 battles have been fought over impressive Kalemegdan. Over the centuries, the citadel has been destroyed more than 40 times. The building of the fortification began in Celtic times, which the Romans extended onto the flood plains during their settlement of 'Singidunum', Belgrade's Roman name. Much of what stands today is the product of 18th-century Austro-Hungarian and TurKish reconstructions. The fort's bloody history, discernible despite today's plethora of jolly cafes and funfairs, only maKes Kalemegdan all the more fascinating. Entering from Knez Mihailova, go through the 18th- century Karadjordje Gate to reach the Upper Town (Gornji grad) of the fortress. From the Stambol Gate (1750), you will reach the Military Museum and the 27.5 metre high ClocK Tower. Further along, you will see a small bricK octagon; this is the 1784 Ali Pasha's Turbeh (tomb), one of Belgrade's few well- preserved Islamic monuments. The Roman Well is nearby, a mysterious 60m deep hole (more a cistern than a well) of dubious origin and shrouded in horrifying legends; apparently the well even managed to creep out a visiting Alfred HitchcocK! Looming beside it is the Victor Monument, a symbol of Belgrade erected in 1928 to commemorate Serbia’s victories over the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires during the BalKan Wars and WWI. This 14 metre high monument is the city’s most recognisable landmarK and famous Belgrade attraction. The plateau around the monument is always crowded with tourists and Belgrade natives, partly because of the breath-taKing view over the confluence of the two rivers that flow through Belgrade, and the beauty of this landmarK as part of the historic Belgrade Fortress. -

UDC 711.4 (497.11) 711.4 (560.118) CHASING THE LIMELIGHT: BELGRADE AND ISTANBUL IN THE GLOBAL COMPETITION Aleksandra Stupar, Cenk Hamamcioglu The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare main changes of contemporary Belgrade and Istanbul - two urban nodes at the crossroads of different and multileveled flows. Following the same pattern of global activation, inevitable competition and networking, these cities are trying to synchronize their multidimensional background, establish new patterns of global behavior and adjust them to the dynamism of modern life. Consequently, their historical role has been modified, urban tissue has been developed, recreated and regenerated, and the output of this process represents an attractive testimony of their global initiation. Revealing the ambiguous nature of strong economic forces as well as a new fusion of urban cultures, Belgrade and Istanbul are structuring the globalized image with the new key-elements. However, their true potential and the real efficiency of this process should be re-evaluated - the changed physiognomy of the city could improve its position in the global hierarchy and facilitate its integration into the global community, but, sometimes, local limitations are too complex and too strong to be ignored. I argue that this specific musicscape relies on communicative and affective aspects of particular performances. I pay special attention to the repertoires performed and the way in which they interweave. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how musical preferences influence sound environment, especially in the context of the tourism industry. Introduction (1) Background of the Survey The Republic of Serbia sets the first priority on joining the EU, hence securing the river water quality which meets the EU standards is absolutely imperative for this realization. The Government of Serbia formulated “National Physical Plan of the Republic of Serbia” and the City of Belgrade prepared a city master plan, “Master Plan of Belgrade to 2021” which was approved in September 2003 by the city council. Following the city master plan, Belgrade Waterworks and Sewerage prepared “Master Plan of the Belgrade Sewerage System to 2021” for its sewerage development. The Government of Serbia requested the Japanese Government to extend Japanese ODA Loans for a sewerage project, Sewerage System Improvement Project for the City of Belgrade (the Project), which is to implement a part of the said sewerage master plan. -

KOVAČ, University of Belgrade, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering, Belgrade The development of logistics infrastructure in Serbia is the key to achieving regional competitiveness and economic prosperity of the state. Intermodal terminals have great significance in logistics networks and their development enables the implementation of intermodal transport technologies as well as participation in international goods flows. Belgrade, the national and regional economic centre and an important traffic node, attracts significant intermodal, container flows. For this reason, it represents a location for the development of an intermodal terminal that would play an important role in the logistics network of Serbia and the region as well. This paper analyses the financial justification of the development of an intermodal terminal in Belgrade, based upon four parameters – net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), benefit-cost ratio (B/C) and investment return period (RP). Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis of the observed parameters regarding the change of input parameter values (the volume of intermodal, container flows and the service price levels) is conducted. Two project funding scenarios are defined according to the involvement of the private sector in overall investments. The result analysis indicates that in both of the scenarios, the development of an intermodal terminal in Belgrade would be financially justified. -
