Flatworms Phylum Platyhelminthes The flatworms include more than 13,000 species of free-living and parasitic species.There are 3 classes of flat- worms, the planarians, flukes and tapeworms. General Physical Traits (Anatomy): Flatworms are bilaterally symmetrical. This means that they can only be cut them length-wise to produce two mirror-image halves. They have a distinct right and left half. This is differ- ent from radially symmetrical animals, like the anemones, which can be cut anywhere top to bottom to get two similar halves. Flatworms have 3 tissue layers, compared to the 2 layers in sponges and cnidarians (jellyfishes, anemones and corals). They also have only one opening for food to enter and waste to leave, like the sponges and cnidarians. This is called a “sac” body plan. Planarian (class Tubellaria) Habitat: They live mostly in saltwater (marine) habitats, but are also found in freshwater. Habits: They are free-living flatworms (not parasites). Physical Traits (Anatomy): Planarians are small - less than a centimeter long. They have a head, brain and sense organs. This is called “cephalization.” The sense organs – called eyespots – look like eyes and are sensitive to light changes, but are not like human eyes. They are made up of simple nerve cells that respond to stimuli, like light. When many nerve cells are gathered in one place, they are called a “ganglion,” so the two eyespots are actually ganglia. They also have points on either side of the head that look a bit like ears, called “sensory lobes” or auricles. They do not hear, but can sense food. -

1 Glossary - Cellbiology Blotting: (Blot Analysis) Widely used biochemical technique for detecting the presence of specific macromolecules (proteins, mRNAs, or DNA sequences) in a mixture. A sample first is separated on an agarose or polyacrylamide gel usually under denaturing conditions; the separated components are transferred (blotting) to a nitrocellulose sheet, which is exposed to a radiolabeled molecule that specifically binds to the macromolecule of interest, and then subjected to autoradiography. Northern B.: mRNAs are detected with a complementary DNA; Southern B.: DNA restriction fragments are detected with complementary nucleotide sequences; Western B.: Proteins are detected by specific antibodies. Cell: The fundamental unit of living organisms. Cells are bounded by a lipid-containing plasma membrane, containing the central nucleus, and the cytoplasm. Cells are generally capable of independent reproduction. More complex cells like Eukaryotes have various compartments (organelles) where special tasks essential for the survival of the cell take place. Cytoplasm: Viscous contents of a cell that are contained within the plasma membrane but, in eukaryotic cells, outside the nucleus. The part of the cytoplasm not contained in any organelle is called the Cytosol. Cytoskeleton: (Gk. ) Three dimensional network of fibrous elements, allowing precisely regulated movements of cell parts, transport organelles, and help to maintain a cell’s shape. • Actin filament: (Microfilaments) Ubiquitous eukaryotic cytoskeletal proteins (one end is attached to the cell-cortex) of two “twisted“ actin monomers; are important in the structural support and movement of cells. Each actin filament (F-actin) consists of two strands of globular subunits (G-Actin) wrapped around each other to form a polarized unit (high ionic cytoplasm lead to the formation of AF, whereas low ion-concentration disassembles AF). -

Jamie E Seymour The answer is predicated on our knowing what the correct treatment is — and we don’t n this issue of the MJA, Isbister and colleagues report that hot water immersion was no more effective than ice packs for I fi Chironex treating the pain of stings by the box jelly sh ( fleckeri).1 This finding is surprising, as jellyfish venoms are heat- labile,2 but unsurprising, given that heat treatment for some patients did not begin until 4 hours after the patient was stung. Managing jellyfish stings is generally subject to confusion, and official advice needs revising to make it clear, consistent and effec- tive. The best known applications of allorecognition are the prevention of inbreeding in hermaphroditic species (e.g., the self-incompatibility [SI] systems in plants), the vertebrate immune response to foreign antigens mediated by MHC loci, and somatic fusion, where two genetically independent individuals physically join to become a chimera. In the few model systems where the loci governing allorecognition outcomes have been identified, the corresponding proteins have exhibited exceptional polymorphism. But information about the evolution of this polymorphism outside MHC is limited. We address this subject in the ascidian Botryllus schlosseri,where allorecognition outcomes are determined by a single locus, called FuHC (Fusion/HistoCompatibility). Molecular variation in FuHC is distributed almost entirely within populations, with very little evidence for differentiation among different populations. Mutation plays a larger role than recombination in the creation of FuHC polymorphism. A selection statistic, neutrality tests, and distribution of variation within and among different populations all provide evidence for selection acting on FuHC, but are not in agreement as to whether the selection is balancing or directional. -

Tracking collars were fitted to 67 of the kangaroos to monitor survival rates and movement patterns over 12 months. Spotlighting and camera traps were used as a secondary monitoring technique particularly for those kangaroos without collars. The survival rate of kangaroos was poor, with an estimated 80% dying within the first month following relocation and only six collared kangaroos surviving for up to 12 months. This result implicates stress associated with the capture, handling, and transport of animals as the likely cause. The unexpected rapid rate of mortality emphasises the importance of minimising stress when undertaking animal relocations. Abstract: The expansion of urban areas and associated clearing of habitat can have severe consequences for native wildlife. One option for managing wildlife in these situations is to relocate them. -
