Pathways into the past

As we leave the heat of the long summer days behind, the autumn breathes cooler air into the valleys of the Tyrolean Alps. Many guests are inspired to walk, wander and hike in the vibrant rural landscapes. Seize this opportunity to explore the Olympiaregion Seefeld from a new perspective! Wherever you go here – there are so many fascinating aspects of ages gone by to discover. Autumn is the perfect time for cultural exploration. Enjoy a pleas- ant hike in the Scharnitz nature reserve and gain fascinating insights into life here decades and centuries ago.

A place steeped in history Scharnitz is the smallest village on the Seefeld high plateau and, due to the proportion of the Karwendel mountain range within its borders, it is – in terms of surface area – one of the largest munici palities in the entire province of Tyrol. Holidays at the Interalpen − Impressive all round Devil’s out and about in December

In the cold of the winter nights, sinister figures accompanied by eerie jangling cowbells lurk in the streets as timid spectators edge towards the chaotic noise until, finally,Nikolaus and Krampus appear – to reward those who have been good, and to rebuke those who have not.

Claws and devils The centuries-old alpine custom is a regular fixture of the advent period in Tyrol. All across the country around Krampustag (05.12.) and Nikolaustag (06.12.) macabre creatures awake to remind the people of their fears. These are mostly young men who climb into shaggy suits, topped with carved wooden masks known as Larven, and instil the fear of the devil into all present. Equipped with birch rods, and large and heavy cowbells chained around their hips, these creatures strike discomfort wherever they go. The word Krampus comes from Middle High German and can mean ‘claw’, something ‘lifeless’, or ‘withered’. In Tyrol, the word Tuifl (devil) is also common, and partly explains the custom of Tuifltratzen. The word tratzen means to annoy, and people at the wayside try to nip and shove the devils without getting caught. Nikolaus and his demonic escorts usually appear on floats and parades on the th5 and 6th of December, symbolising good and evil respectively. Kram- pus is also related to the animalistic heathen creatures known as Perchten. However, these creatures are only seen during the Rauh- nächte period at the turn of the year.

Living folklore In Tyrol there are numerous Tuifl clubs. Every year their members work hard to uphold these traditions in preparation for the many processions, runs and parades. Particular emphasis is placed on the Traditional Krampus mask Kaiserweihnacht with beautiful views of Innsbruck gruesome masks, skilfully and elaborately carved from pine and linden wood, and adorned with goat, ibex or ram horns. There are no limits to the creativity or horror that go into these masks. The goatskin and sheepskin suits are no less impressive, often weighing An imperial Christmas up to 30 kilogrammes.
