ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Cover: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum 1 An enduring and vibrant memory Shoah survivor and Nobel prizewinner Elie Wiesel passed away on July 2, 2016 at the age of 87. Like Primo Levi and Imre Kertész, he was one of the most important advocates for the memory of the Shoah. Marked by his expe- rience in the camps and deeply imbued with the principles of Judaism, he was a leading moral figure of our time. Like the late Samuel Pisar, Elie Wiesel had been a member of the Board of Administration of the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah. Their commitment to transmitting the memory of Jewish cultures was a role model for us. Remembering the plight of exterminated Jews and promoting their culture today are the two essential principles that guide our initiatives. They are inseparable from our mission. The memory embodied by Elie Wiesel and Samuel Pisar, the memory that we defend, is not an endless and sterile rumination on the past—quite the oppo- site, it is instead alive and vibrant. It compels us to participate in struggles for human dignity and to fight against the scourge of indifference. Rather than seeking repentance, we aim to defend the truth against those who preach hate and deny genocide. The truth is the very foundation of our democracies, the basis for the dialogue on which they depend. It is also crucial to maintain a critical viewpoint by remembering the genocides that represent the deepest wounds that humanity has inflicted upon itself. Over and beyond the Shoah, the unique history of the Jewish people holds universal lessons. -

Présentation,Soupault Tel Qu'en Lui-Même,Radiogénie De Philippe Soupault,Soupault Vaudeville,Un « Ballet Radiophonique »
Présentation L’activité radiophonique de Michel Butor reste pour l’essentiel inexplorée, et trop limitée aux versions imprimées des œuvres des années 1960 (Réseau aérien, 6 810 000 litres d’eau par seconde) et, plus marginalement, des entretiens avec Georges Charbonnier (Gallimard, 1967). L’attention accordée à ces livres fait oublier les versions sonores elles-mêmes, en France et en Allemagne notamment, de ces textes et d’autres, et surtout l’intense activité de Butor à la radio dans les décennies suivantes, en France et en Suisse particulièrement. Ce numéro de Komodo 21 proposera une première exploration de ce grand pan de l’œuvre butorienne, quasi absent des douze gros volumes des Œuvres complètes composés dans les années 2000, avec le concours de l’écrivain, aux éditions La Différence. Il réunira des compagnons de création de Butor et des spécialistes de son œuvre ou des relations entre la littérature et la radio. Présentation Ce dossier (issu d’une journée d’étude organisée à Montpellier en 2014) explore diverses facettes de l’activité et de l’œuvre radiophoniques du poète Philippe Soupault (mort en 1990) dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Soupault est un clandestin de l’histoire littéraire de l’après-guerre, voire déjà des années 1930, voire même du milieu des années vingt, date de son exclusion du groupe surréaliste (1926), dont le co-fondateur de la revueLittérature (1919) et co-auteur des Champs magnétiques s’écarte déjà à partir de 1924. Dans les années trente, quand il se lance dans le grand reportage pour Le Petit Parisien, Vu ou Excelsior et anime une chronique littéraire à Paris-PTT (1937-1938), il disparaît un peu plus encore des radars, dans un champ littéraire où abondent pourtant les écrivains-journalistes, où brillent les écrivains-reporters [1]. -

ALTA41 promises to be another outstanding conference, with an almost around-the-clock series of panels, readings, and special events that underscore this year’s themes: Performance, Props, and Platforms. This year’s conference features 67 panels, 229 presenters, and 91 bilingual readers, not to mention the yet-to be- Wdiscovered talent among us that will shine at the always-amazing Declamación! Let me draw special attention to the theater events we have planned, and to the cross-disciplinary nature of the conference. We welcome renowned playwright, translator, and educator Caridad Svich, recipient of an Obie Award for Lifetime Achievement, as our keynote speaker. Two staged readings are planned, one cosponsored by IU’s renowned Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance, and another in collaboration with Cardinal Stage. Of particular note as well are the sessions “Translanguaging in ASL Embodied Poetry Performance: A Marriage of Words and Hands” (featuring the Flying Words Project, Deaf American Sign Language poet Peter Cook and collaborator Kenny Lerner), and the Translation Centre Stage Workshop. Endless thanks are due to this year’s conference planning committee. 2018 has been another busy year for our organization. Earlier in the spring, we signed an affiliation agreement with the University of Arizona, and effective January 1, 2019, ALTA will have its central office on the UA campus in Tucson. -

Journal of Jewish Identities (2019), 12(2) Portrait of an Authentic Schnorrer: Abrasza Zemsz in Richard Marienstras’s Memory Kathleen Gyssels, University of Antwerp Introduction Born in Moscow in 1919, Abrasza Zemsz was one of the many displaced non-religious Polish Jews who ended up in France after World War II. Like other refugees in the postwar period, he struggled to start a new life. He is of interest to us due to the world he inhabited; a Holocaust survivor stricken with poor health and unable to adapt to postwar French bourgeois life who simultaneously inhabited a space among a variety of postwar Parisian art- ists and intellectuals. An extremely gifted commentator on the art scene— including painting and cinema, literature and poetry—and intensely inter- ested in postwar global politics, especially in France and Israel, Zemsz made a lasting impact on those with whom he came in contact. A Polish soldier in World War II, Zemsz fought in 1948 for the future State of Israel but soon returned to Paris, where he became a student of the grammarian A.J. Greimas and the anthropologist André Leroy-Gouran. Most of all, he was close to Claude Lévi-Strauss. However, Zemsz’s weak health—a consequence of the war years and a poor diet in the immediate postwar years—prevented him from becoming an anthropologist in his own right. Nonetheless, he took part in the first archaeological missions in the caves of Lascaux. Zemsz befriended a large number of people in postwar Paris who were to become important artists, such as Francis Picabia and his daughter, and intellectuals such as Pietro Sarto, David Perlov, and Claude Olievenstein. -
