Understanding Shades of Grey: The Testimonies of Two Former Auschwitz- Birkenau Sonderkommando Survivors: The Gabbai Brothers. by SARAH JESSICA GREGORY A chapter from a larger thesis titled “Understanding Shades of Grey: The Written and Oral Testimonies of Jewish Prisoner Functionaries” submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts Honours in Modern History Macquarie University 2012 This essay focuses on two Jewish Sonderkommando members from the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and how they have constructed their written and oral testimonies after the Holocaust. Prisoner functionaries such as the Sonderkommando were prisoners used by the Nazis to control the everyday functioning of the labour and death camps. In return, they received “privileges,” such as more food for their cooperation. Because of this cooperation, many non-privileged prisoners viewed these prisoner functionaries as Nazi collaborators, particularly when recounting their own experiences. This made many prisoner functionaries self-impose a degree of silence for fear of judgement and retribution after the war. The Sonderkommando, for example, remained largely silent after their liberation from Allied forces because of fear of judgement and misunderstandings of their position. The Nazis used the Sonderkommando, the ‘special unit’ or squad, as forced labourers to facilitate the extermination process of the “Jewish problem.” Sonderkommando members ensured the fast-paced undressing phase of prisoners prior to their gassing, removed bodies from the gas chambers and relocated them to the furnace room or large outdoor pits for cremation; removed valuable items, hair and gold teeth, and disposed of the human ashes from the crematoriums.1 In return for this work, Sonderkommando members received greater quantities of food, better living arrangements, and more leisure time. -

Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party’s rise to power in Germany ushered in an era of attacks against people Hitler deemed undesirable. Jews living across Europe became the primary target of Nazi hatred and violence. Attacks against other groups of people—such as individuals with mental or physical disabilities, political prisoners, Romani, Soviet citizens and prisoners of war, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, Slavs, and Jehovah’s Witnesses—also became a part of the Nazi program to “purify” German society. Those who did not fit within Nazi standards of a “master race” faced capture and horrific brutality in the attempted genocide now known as the Holocaust. From 1939 to 1941, the Nazis steadily took steps toward a formal policy of extermination. Known as the Final Solution, this policy spread to each region that fell under Nazi rule throughout World War II. Anti-Semitism had been present throughout Europe for centuries, peaking during times of upheaval, such as the Crusades or outbreaks of plague. This historical precedent perpetuated hateful stereotypes that again resurfaced in the era of upheaval that followed Germany’s defeat in World War I. While anti-Semitism had been limited to fringe political groups, the rising popularity of the Nazi Party helped promote ideas of segregating and removing the Jewish population from the region. While not all Germans actively supported the anti-Semitic attacks taken by the Nazis, many adopted an attitude of indifference toward the treatment of their Jewish neighbors. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Cover: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum 1 An enduring and vibrant memory Shoah survivor and Nobel prizewinner Elie Wiesel passed away on July 2, 2016 at the age of 87. Like Primo Levi and Imre Kertész, he was one of the most important advocates for the memory of the Shoah. Marked by his expe- rience in the camps and deeply imbued with the principles of Judaism, he was a leading moral figure of our time. Like the late Samuel Pisar, Elie Wiesel had been a member of the Board of Administration of the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah. Their commitment to transmitting the memory of Jewish cultures was a role model for us. Remembering the plight of exterminated Jews and promoting their culture today are the two essential principles that guide our initiatives. They are inseparable from our mission. The memory embodied by Elie Wiesel and Samuel Pisar, the memory that we defend, is not an endless and sterile rumination on the past—quite the oppo- site, it is instead alive and vibrant. It compels us to participate in struggles for human dignity and to fight against the scourge of indifference. Rather than seeking repentance, we aim to defend the truth against those who preach hate and deny genocide. The truth is the very foundation of our democracies, the basis for the dialogue on which they depend. It is also crucial to maintain a critical viewpoint by remembering the genocides that represent the deepest wounds that humanity has inflicted upon itself. Over and beyond the Shoah, the unique history of the Jewish people holds universal lessons. -

No part of this survey may be reproduced without permission The comparative employment of men and women as actors, directors and writers in the UK theatre industry, and how new writing features in venues’ programming Period 1: 16 – 29 January 2006 (inclusive) Section A: Actors, Writers, Directors and New Writing. For the two weeks covered in Period 1, there were 140 productions staged at 112 venues. Writers Of the 140 productions there were: 98 written by men 70% 13 written by women 9% 22 mixed collaboration 16% (7 unknown) 5% New Writing 48 of the 140 plays were new writing (34%). Of the 48 new plays: 30 written by men 62% 8 written by women 17% 10 mixed collaboration 21% The greatest volume of new writing was shown at Fringe venues, with 31% of its programme for the specified time period featuring new writing. New Adaptations/ New Translations 9 of the 140 plays were new adaptations/ new translations (6%).
