Material was pitfall trapped in 2010 and 2011 on twelve sites of the agricultural landscape in the Prešov town and its near vicinity, Eastern Slovakia. A total of 14,763 ground beetle individuals were entrapped. Material collection resulted into 92 Carabidae species, with the following six species dominating: Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Pseudoophonus rufipes, Brachinus crepitans, Anchomenus dorsalis and Poecilus versicolor. Studied habitats differed significantly in the number of entrapped individuals, activity abundance as well as representation of the carabids according to their habitat preferences and ability to fly. However, no significant distinction was observed in the diversity, evenness neither dominance.

Acta Mycol. 41 (1): 55 64, 2006. This contribution presents new and historical data on the Laboulbeniales of Latvian Coleoptera. An annotated checklist of 26 taxa is given, 13 are new for Latvia. Only six taxa (accepted names) from Briedis’ historical list were found again and six more need to be confirmed as Briedis’ material was lost. A neotype is indicated here for the extremely rare Laboulbenia elaphricola Siemaszko et Siemaszko. Its morphology is discussed and compared with Laboulbenia elaphri Spegazzini and Laboulbenia vulgaris Peyr. Key words: Laboulbeniales, Latvia, Coleoptera, Laboulbenia elaphricola INTRODUCTION Laboulbeniales (Ascomycetes) are strictly parasitic on Arthropoda, mainly in- sects. Although widespread, information concerning their distribution in Europe is unequal and, as yet, a reflection of the distribution of laboulbeniologists in Europe (Weir, Rossi 1995). The most exhaustive studies were carried out in Spain and Poland, followed by France, Finland, Britain, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Hungary. From other European countries, including the Baltic countries, only very few and iso- lated reports or collections are available. Records from Estonia and Lithuania have been published in Siemaszko and Siemaszko (1928, 1932), Huldén (1985) and Markovskaja (2000) respectively. In Latvia 16 species of Laboulbeniales have been recorded in the literature (Briedis 1932; Huldén 1985).

The sampling was not continued eve1y where for all years, and during some years the catches from the standard sets were not completely identified. Therefore, a method for the estimation of the actual numbers in 10 interaction groups was developed. Environmental conditions were not stationary during the study. In the 1960's the ground-water table gradually receded, and during the l 970's the effects of increas ing air pollution became apparent: increasing acidification and fertilization of the upper layers of the soil and a gradual replacement of both Calluna and Erica by grasses; but also precipitation increased.

  • Holocene Palaeoenvironmental Reconstruction Based on Fossil Beetle Faunas from the Altai-Xinjiang Region, China
Holocene palaeoenvironmental reconstruction based on fossil beetle faunas from the Altai-Xinjiang region, China Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of London By Tianshu Zhang February 2018 Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London Declaration of Authorship I Tianshu Zhang hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 25/02/2018 1 Abstract This project presents the results of the analysis of fossil beetle assemblages extracted from 71 samples from two peat profiles from the Halashazi Wetland in the southern Altai region of northwest China. The fossil assemblages allowed the reconstruction of local environments of the early (10,424 to 9500 cal. yr BP) and middle Holocene (6374 to 4378 cal. yr BP). In total, 54 Coleoptera taxa representing 44 genera and 14 families have been found, and 37 species have been identified, including a new species, Helophorus sinoglacialis. The majority of the fossil beetle species identified are today part of the Siberian fauna, and indicate cold steppe or tundra ecosystems. Based on the biogeographic affinities of the fossil faunas, it appears that the Altai Mountains served as dispersal corridor for cold-adapted (northern) beetle species during the Holocene. Quantified temperature estimates were made using the Mutual Climate Range (MCR) method. In addition, indicator beetle species (cold adapted species and bark beetles) have helped to identify both cold and warm intervals, and moisture conditions have been estimated on the basis of water associated species.
