Eight trophic groups of beetles were identifi ed, and 1 State Plant Protection Service, among them the largest number (38.7% of species detected and 28.5% of beetle speci- Sukilėlių 9a, LT-11351 Vilnius, mens) presented a decaying wood and mycetobiont beetle group. Most frequent beetles Lithuania were Dasytes plumbeus (Dasytidae), Sciodrepoides watsoni (Leiodidae) and Polygraphus poligraphus (Curculionidae). Th ere was detected 71 new localities with the occurence of 54 beetle species rare for Lithuania. 3 Kaunas T. Also, Wood is a very important material for many countries, and pheromones for D. rufi pennis were established (Pitman, Vite, Lithuania is actively engaged in international wood trade. 1970; Vite et al., 1972; Kline et al., 1974; Furniss et al., 1976; Economically signifi cant insect species may be imported Gries et al., 1992) and easily ordered. Th e goals of the present with wood from other parts of the world and cause unde- study were to test sticky (Cross-vane) traps for catching bark sirable consequences. It is necessary to organize the search beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), to perform the search for in plant material imported to Lithuania in localities where D. rufi pennis in Lithuania and to examine the species compo- timbers are temporarily stored (port and railway stations) sition of non-target insects in the traps. or transported via roads close to forests. In early stages of insect invasion it is usually possible to eliminate the focus MATERIALS AND METHODS and to keep the costs of applied measures at a lower level. Th is investigation was one of the fi rst attempts of the State Sticky traps (Cross-vane traps, product code BC2590, Plant Protection Service to search for non-European bark AgriSense-BCS Ltd., former subsidiary of Th ermo Trilogy beetles – Dendroctonus rufi pennis aft er the establishing the Corporation, USA; Figure) and pheromone baits for D. ru- Phytosanitary Research Laboratory in 1997. Th e pheromone bait was assumed to work for a period grow in Lithuanian parks, botanical gardens or plantations not shorter than a month. Th e traps were fastened to upper (Snarskis, Galinis, 1974; Januškevičius, 2004) and pose a spruce branches 1.5 m above the ground at forest edges.
