Diversity of the coprine members is reflected through the differences in morphology, resource relocation and foraging activity. They use one of the three broad nesting strategies for laying eggs (Dwellers, Rollers, Tunnelers and Kleptocoprids) each with implications for ecological function. These interesting insects fly around in search of manure deposits, or pats from herbivores like cows and elephants. Through manipulating faeces during the feeding process, dung beetles initiate a series of ecosystem functions ranging from secondary seed dispersal to nutrient cycling and parasite suppression. The detritus-feeding beetles play a small but remarkable role in our ecosystem. They feed on manure, use it to provide housing and food for their young, and improve nutrient cycling and soil structure. Many of the functions provide valuable ecosystem services such as biological pest control, soil fertilization. Members of the genus Onthophagus have been widely proposed as an ideal group for biodiversity inventory and monitoring; they satisfy all of the criteria of an ideal focal taxon, and they have already been used in ecological research and biodiversity survey and conservation work in many regions of the world. -

PECK Department of Biology, Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario, K1S 5B6, Canada Since my earlier reports on the Leiodidae of Jamaica and Puerto Rico (Peck, 1970, 1972), I have had the opportunity to spend an additional 13 weeks in field work on these islands. In Jamaica this was from mid-December to mid-January, 1972-1973, and from late July to early September, 1974. In Puerto Rico it was from early to late May, 1973, and a week in June, 1974. This has resulted in new data on the leiodids of these islands, which are presented here. Ad- ditional data and information on forest habitat sites may be found in Peck and Kukalova-Peck (1975), and on cave sites in Peck (1974, 1975). Methods and materials are similar to those utilized for my earlier papers. Collections were primarily made in forests with pitfall traps baited with carrion and human dung (Newton and Peck, 1975); by Berlese-Tullgren funnel extraction of arthropods from sifted forest litter, and from bat guano accumulations in caves. In this work, 259 kg (770 liters) of sifted forest litter were processed for Jamaica and 93 kg (171 liters) for Puerto Rico, in addition to many other extractions from samples of bat guano. Most of the arthropod residues from these collections are deposited with the Field Mu- seum (Chicago). -

Report on beetles (Coleoptera) collected from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2013 by Dr Martin Luff. 1. Introduction This year has been a particularly busy one for my work on the beetles of the Estate. I recorded numbers of species on 11 separate dates from April (at the end of the cold spring) through to mid- November. The generally warm and dry summer enabled me to record much more by sweeping herbaceous vegetation around field margins, especially in Hill Park. At the end of May I was assisted by an old friend of mine, and former fellow student, Dr Colin Welch (RCW), who is an authority on the Staphylinidae (rove beetles). I was also provided with the contents of the nest boxes from Dartington Hills in February and September, thanks to Will Wallis and Mike Newby. Finally Mary Bartlett again encouraged me to examine the fauna of her compost heap in November. 2. Results A total of 201 beetle species from 35 families were recorded. This is considerably more than in any previous year that I have collected at Dartington. Of these, 85 species were not recorded in my earlier lists (Luff, 2010-12). The overall number of species that I have recorded from the Estate is now 369, which is almost 10% of the entire British beetle fauna. The bird nest boxes yielded 13 species, with over half being new to the Estate, despite having examined the boxes in previous years; the contents of the boxes were also rather different between spring and autumn, with only four species common to both. -

This article deals with the Agathidium vaderi beetle named in 2005 by Kelly B. Miller and Quentin D. Wheeler after the fictional character Darth Vader due to the postulated similarity of the beetle's head with Darth Vader's helmet which is ultimately based on Japanese Samurai helmet designs. Additionally, attention is drawn to the the mutual benefits available to the taxonomy as well as for the films in the Star Wars series due to the unconventual species name. Key Words: Agathidium vaderi, Star Wars, Japanese helmets, Taxonomy, Nomenclature Einleitung Im Japanischen wird der zur Familie der Blatthornkäfer (Scarabaeidae) gehörende Allomyrina dichotoma (LINNAEUS, 1771) als kabutomushi bezeichnet, was soviel wie "Helminsekt" (kabuto = Helm, mushi = Insekt) bedeutet und eine Anspielung auf japanische Samuraihelme darstellt. A. dichotoma bildet im Land der aufgehenden Sonne einen fest verankerten Bestandteil der Populärkultur und man lässt dort Männchen dieser Spezies gegeneinander kämpfen. In den Wettbewerben geht es darum, wessen Käfer die schwerste Last ziehen kann und um Spiele, bei denen man die Käfermännchen dazu bringt um ein Stück Wassermelone zu kämpfen (LAURENT 2001: 70) – somit "eine Insekten- version des Sumo-Ringens" (HERZOG 2012: 57). -

In the Fort St James Forest District, in central British Columbia, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) (Fd) grows at the northern limit of its North American range. At the district level the species is rare (representing 1% of timber stands), and in the early 1990's growing populations of the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuage Hopkins) threatened the loss of all mature Douglas-fir habitat in the district. -

Before our study, the genus Anemadus Reitter, 1884 was composed of 39 valid species; their geographical distributions are generally limited within the zoogeographical regions of the Palaearctic and the Oriental.
