Price1 and Daniel K. Young1 ABSTRACT The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidin- baited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examina- tion of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be con- firmed. -

Beetles of the genus Claviger are specialized myrmecophiles and are dependent on their host ants throughout the whole life cycle. During the field research, which were conducted in the Low Beskid Mts. (South-Eastern Poland), new sites of both species were found. C. longicornis was recorded in a colony of Lasius sabularum (Bondroit, 1918) and this is the first record of this ant as its host . -
A Review of the Japanese Kateretidae Fauna (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea)

The family Kateretidae of Japan is revised. Nine species belonging to 6 genera are recognized, including: Kateretes japonicus Hisamatsu, 1985, K. takagii S-T. Hisamatsu, 2006, Platamartus jakowlewi Reitter, 1892, Heterhelus (Heterhelus) scutellaris (Heer, 1841), H. (Heterhelus) morio (Reitter, 1878), H. (Boreades) solani (Heer, 1841), Sibirhelus corpulentus (Reitter, 1900), Brachyp- terus urticae (Fabricius, 1792), and Brachypterolus pulicarius (Linnaeus, 1758). Heterhelus morio, which was synonymized under H. scutellaris by KIREJTSHUK (1989), is found to be a valid species, and is herein resurrected. Platamartus jakowlewi is newly recorded from Japan. Brachypterolus shimoyamai Hisamatsu, 1985, syn. nov., is synonymized under Brachypterolus pulicarius. Dorsal habitus images, illustrations of male and female genitalia, and other important diagnostic characters are provided for all species. A key for identifi cation of all Japanese taxa is also provided. Key words. Coleoptera, Kateretidae, taxonomy, new synonym, new record, key, Japan, Palaearctic Region Introduction The family Kateretidae, belonging to the superfamily Cucujoidea, is mainly distributed in the Holarctic Region, and comprises about 95 species within 14 genera worldwide (JELÍNEK & CLINE 2010). Both larval and adult Kateretidae are anthophagous: the larvae are monophagous or oligophagous, while adults are more generalized feeders, occurring on true host plants only during mating and ovipositing periods; otherwise, they feed on a broader assortment of fl owering plants (JELÍNEK & CLINE 2010). -

Department of Biological Sciences, University of Wollongong, New South Wales 2522 Received: I October 2003 7 The diet of the Eastern Bristlebird Oasyomis brachypterus in New South Wales was determined from observations and an analysis of faeces, stomach and gut contents of 18 birds caught in or obtained from Booderee National Park, Jervis Bay and Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, New South Wales. The study showed these birds largely take mobile terrestrial invertebrate species, the majority of which are ants and beetles. There is some indication that plant material, especially seeds, are also part of the diet. Observations suggest that the diet is opportunistic and based on foraging behaviour of 'peck it and see'. INTRODUCTION STUDY AREA AND METHODS Dasyornis brachypterus The specimens used in this study were obtained from two sites. The rare Eastern Bristlebird ° ° (Passeriformes: Pardalotidae), is a small, semi-flightless, Booderee National Park, (35 08'S, l 50 45'E) a Commonwealth of Australia owned area that occupies most of the Bherwerre brownish bird inhabiting low, dense vegetation in coastal Peninsula, on the southern side of Jervis Bay, on the south coast and near coastal south-eastern Australia. It once occurred of New South Wales and Barren Grounds Nature Reserve (34°40'S, in an almost continuous distribution from southern l 50 °42'E) on the lllawarra plateau, west of Kiama, New South Queensland to western Victoria (Baker 1997). -

PECK Department of Biology, Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario, K1S 5B6, Canada Since my earlier reports on the Leiodidae of Jamaica and Puerto Rico (Peck, 1970, 1972), I have had the opportunity to spend an additional 13 weeks in field work on these islands. In Jamaica this was from mid-December to mid-January, 1972-1973, and from late July to early September, 1974. In Puerto Rico it was from early to late May, 1973, and a week in June, 1974. This has resulted in new data on the leiodids of these islands, which are presented here. Ad- ditional data and information on forest habitat sites may be found in Peck and Kukalova-Peck (1975), and on cave sites in Peck (1974, 1975). Methods and materials are similar to those utilized for my earlier papers. Collections were primarily made in forests with pitfall traps baited with carrion and human dung (Newton and Peck, 1975); by Berlese-Tullgren funnel extraction of arthropods from sifted forest litter, and from bat guano accumulations in caves. In this work, 259 kg (770 liters) of sifted forest litter were processed for Jamaica and 93 kg (171 liters) for Puerto Rico, in addition to many other extractions from samples of bat guano. Most of the arthropod residues from these collections are deposited with the Field Mu- seum (Chicago). -

The primary sensory function of the modified maxillary and labial palps is reduced, and the ventral mouthparts transformed into a licking/‘sponging’ device. Many muscles have been reduced, in relation to the coleopteran groundplan or other staphylinoids. The head capsule contains voluminous glands whose appeasement secretions are crucial for the beetle survival in ant colonies. The brain, in turn, has been shifted into the neck region. -

In the domains of both Morphology and Taxonomy the study' of Insect genitalia has evoked considerable interest during the past half century. Zander (1900, 1901, 1903) suggested a common structural plan for the genitalia in various orders of insects. This work stimulated further research and his conclusions were amplified by Crampton (1920) who homologized the different parts in the genitalia of Hymenoptera, Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Trichoptera Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Strepsiptera with those of more generalized insects like the Ephe meroptera and Thysanura. During this time the use of genitalic charac ters for taxonomic purposes was also realized particularly in cases where the other imaginal characters had failed to serve. In this con nection may be mentioned the work of Buchanan White (1876), Gosse (1883), Bethune Baker (1914), Pierce (1909, 1914, 1922) and others. Also, a comparative account of the genitalia, as a basis for the phylo genetic study of different insect orders, was employed by Walker (1919), Sharp and Muir (1912), Singh-Pruthi (1925) and Cole (1927), in Orthop tera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and the Diptera respectively. It is sur prising, work of this nature having been found so useful in these groups, that an important order like the Lepidoptera should have escaped careful analysis at the hands of the morphologists. -

Background Naphill Common covers an area of approximately 63 hectares and consists of mature oak and beech wood with a good understorey of holly and associated woodland vegetation. In general it is possible to penetrate the woodland without too much difficulty and a good network of reasonably well defined tracks (some with information posts) exists. The woodland is considered to be ecologically important and is jointly administered by Natural England and the National Trust. Currently the administrative boundaries are not apparent in the wood, but a recent upsurge of interest in the area has seen the formation of the ‘Friends of Naphill Common’- a user group keen to promote the woodland both for its amenity value and also because of its potential as an important wildlife resource.
