DISTRIBUTION OF VILLAS AND SOME OF THE MAL TESE ECONOMY IN THE ROMAN PERIOD by ANTIIONY BONANNO CERTAINLY one of the most striking aspects of the Maltese archae ology of the Roman period is the comparatively large number of villas, or rural houses, distributed in different areas of the two major islands of the Maltese archipelago. Already twenty-two sites have been recorded, their state of preservation ranging from just a few foundation wall s to full-seal e buil din g compl exe s. By far the largest and most impressive remains of such buildings are those excavated in recent years by the Italian Mission from the University of Rome at San Pawl Milqi.l Another villa, not much smaller in scale, was excavated in 1915 by Ashby at Ta' Kacca tura, near Biri:ebbuga, on the other side of the valley opposite the well-known prehistoric site of Gnar Dalam. 2 Yet another is cur rently being excavated by the Mus~um Department at Zejtun. 3 The thermal complex of Gnajn Tuffiena, decorated with pleasant and varied geometrical mosaics, must have formed part of a sumptuous villa. 4 Traces of similar baths have been recorded at Marsaxlokk,5 and another villa with richly patterned mosaics was brought to light at Ramla Bay in Gozo. 6 Other sites which have produced re mains of villas are: Tas-Sittin (near Fawwara), Ras ir-Raheb (near Bahrija), Fiddien (near ,Mtahleb), Wardija, Bidnija, Hal Far and St. Thomas Bay.7, Until its name is corrected it may not be super fluous to repeat that the so-called 'Roman Villa' of Rabat is not a villa at all, but a Roman town house. -

In total, 41 species belonging to 28 genera, 21 tribes and 3 families were collected and identified, including 25 species newly recorded for the Iraqi fauna. General distribution, collecting localities and methods, with plant association data for each species are given. Keywords: Coleoptera, Curculionoidea, Entomofauna, Iraq, Kurdistan. INTRODUCTION The superfamily Curculionoidea, commonly named snout beetles or weevils, is one of the highest diversity group of insects and probably the largest family of the order Coleoptera, that including over 62,000 species and around 6,000 genera thus far described (Oberprieler et al., 2007). They are small to large-sized beetles (approximately 1-60 mm) of different shapes, colors and habitats;Weevils can be recognized by their more or less long and slender rostrum with mouthparts situated at its apex, and mostly geniculate antennae with more or less compact antennal club (Thompson, 1992; Kuschel, 1995; Alonso- Zarazaga and Lyal, 1999; Anderson, 2002; Marvaldi et al., 2002; Oberprieler et al., 2007). -

Oise amber has eight species, Baltic amber has 118 species, and Rovno amber has 16 species. Nine new genera and 18 new species are described from Baltic amber. Four new synonyms are noted: Palaeometrioxena Legalov, 2012, syn. nov. is synonymous with Archimetrioxena Voss, 1953; Paleopissodes weigangae Ulke, 1947, syn. nov. is synonymous with Electrotribus theryi Hustache, 1942; Electrotribus erectosquamata Rheinheimer, 2007, syn. nov. is synonymous with Succinostyphlus mroczkowskii Kuska, 1996; Protonaupactus Zherikhin, 1971, syn. nov. is synonymous with Paonaupactus Voss, 1953. Keys for Eocene amber Curculionoidea are given. There are the first records of Aedemonini and Camarotini, and genera Limalophus and Cenocephalus in Baltic amber. This case study 13 of an Ash-Field Maple woodland partially converted to conifer plantation investigates differences 14 between species assemblages of soil and litter invertebrates, and plants, using multivariate 15 ordination and indicator species analysis for eleven microhabitats. 16 Microhabitats representing the main body of uniform litter were compared with more localised 17 microhabitats including dead wood and areas of wet soil. Species accumulation curves suggest that 18 for this site it is more efficient to sample from varied microhabitats of limited spatial scale rather 19 than the broad habitat areas when generating a species inventory. -

SCI., 2010, 4(12), 123-131 Determination of the Species of Curculionoidea Superfamily on Alfalfa Fields (Medicago sativa L.) and Their Distribution in Bursa Province of Turkey Kıymet Senan COŞKUNCU¹*, Nimet Sema GENCER² ¹Bursa Province Directorate of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 16170 Hurriyet, Bursa-TÜRKİYE ²Uludag University, Faculty of Agriculture, Plant Protection Department, 16059 Bursa-TÜRKİYE ABSTRACT This study was carried out to determine superfamily species of Curculionoidea which is living in the alfalfa areas of Bursa province of Turkey during 2004-2005. Insect samplings were collected by sweep net over a 7-12 day period, on alfalfa fields. In this study, among determined species, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal 1813), Apion pisi (Fabricius 1801), Sitona macularius (crinitus) (Marsham 1802), Sitona hispidulus (Fabricius 1777) and Sitona humeralis Stephens 1831 were recorded as important pests and widespread. The most abundance species rates were Apion pisi 85.0%, Hypera postica 7.2%, S. humeralis 3.4%, S. macularis 2.1%, S. hispidulus 1.3 % respectively. Nonetheless Sitona lineatus (Linneaus 1758), Sitona flavescens (Marshall 1802), Ceutorhynchus pallidactylus (Marsham 1802), Ceutorhynchus anatolicus Schultze, 1900, Phyllobius sp., Protapion trifolii (Linnaeus 1768), Ceratapion gibbirostre (Gyllenhal 1813), Gymnetron rotundicolle Gyllenhal 1838 were also found in towns of Bursa province. S. flavescens, Ceutorhynchus pallidactylus, C. anatolicus, Protapion trifolii, C. gibbirostre were the first record in Bursa province. Key Words: Alfalfa, Curculionoidae, distribution, Bursa.
