I think I told you that after A number of telephone calls to Mr. R. W. Robertson of Pitman-Moore, that firm reversed its position requiring us to purchase 33,000 doses of the 50,000 for which we HAD asked. In addition to the 17,000 doses donated by Pitman-Moore we received 2,000 from Eli Lilly and 1,000 from Lederle. After you called me and told me about your conversation with Dr. Max Tishler of Merck & Co., I got in touch with him. He offered 50,000 doses for immediate shipment and DID not make A grant or A gift to the Weizmann Institute A condition of Merckls offer. I made it clear to Dr. Tishler that I would have to consult with Israel regarding their needs before I could accept his most generous offer. Yesterday we received A reply by cable in which it was said that there is still need of 40,000 doses to "complete immunization in additional areas." This, then, will complete the mission, the success of which is due in so large A measure to your sympathetic understanding, your cooperation and your indispensable assistance. Youth R~ference Boaref: Cleveland Philadelphia Morris Laub, Chairman IN AM ER ICA: Hadassah helps interpret Israel to the American people; provides basic Jewish education as a background for intelligent and creative Jewish living in America; carries on a program for American Jewish youth; and participates in efforts which help safequard the democratic way of life here and work toward peace and security throag'ho'ut the world. IN ISRAEL: The members .of Hadassah support Hadassah's countrywide medical and public health system, its extensive child welfare and vocational education projects; provide maintenance and education for youth new- comers through Youth Aliyah, of which Hadassah is the principal supporting agency in the United States; and participate in a program of Jewish National Fund land purchase and reclamation. HASHACHAR: Hadassah is sole sponsor of a new youth movement for boys and girls, ages 9 to 25, which combines the strength of Young Judaea and Junior Hadassah in four age and program divisions. In America it includes a summer camp program and year-round activities to enable Jewish youth to understand and act upon problems facing them as Americans, Jews and Zionists. In Israel, to develop concrete links with the land and the people, programs include: Summer Institutes, year-round study courses, Meier Shfeyah Youth Village, Israel Scout Movement (Tsofim). HADASSAH carries out the program described above through two corporations: Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, Inc., which administers the American program, and Hadassah Medical Relief Association, ,,,., . The inaugural meeting was held in the Binyanei Ha'umah in the presence of the President of the State and Mrs. Shazar, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Knesset, Cabinet Ministers, the Chief Justice, Judges of the Supreme Court, the State Comptroller, visitors from abroad, public dignitaries and a large and representative gathering which filled the entire hall. The meeting was opened by Mr. Jacob Tsur, Chair- man of the Zionist General Council, who paid homage to Israel's Nobel Prize Laureate, the writer S.Y, Agnon, and read the message Mr. Agnon had sent to the gathering. Mr. Tsur also congratulated the poetess and writer, Nellie Zaks. The speaker then went on to discuss the gravity of the time for both the State of Israel and the Zionist Move- ment, and called upon citizens in this country and Zionists throughout the world to stand shoulder to shoulder to over- come the crisis. Professor Andre Chouraqui, Deputy Mayor of the City of Jerusalem, welcomed the delegates on behalf of the City.

The desire first arose in Europe, but soon American Jews followed suit. The American Zionist movement was riddled with internal strife from the get-go, and it took the involvement of “the People’s Attorney”, Louis D. Brandeis, and his friendship with the American President, Woodrow Wilson, to unite the American Zionists, at least for a little while. President Wilson quickly endorsed the Balfour Declaration, largely because of his friendship with Brandeis. This thesis is about the period between 1897 and 1930, and the main focus is on Louis D.     JEWISH WOMEN'S ORGANIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES By REBEKAH KOHUT I The exemption of the woman from the performance of all legal and ceremonial obligations imposed by Jewish law on the male has placed her in an anomalous position where she appears virtually ignored, whereas, morally, she is an object of exaltation. However, from time immemorial, we see her combating this supposedly inferior social status, and today we see that she has successfully assumed a place of leader- ship in the community, and has applied to this task all the inherent wisdom and beauty of spirit which have become proverbial of the Jewess. As a matter of fact, time and tradition have always linked the ingenuity of the Jewess with the desire to do good. In Proverbs we find it said of the ideal woman: "She may open her mouth to wisdom, but her tongue must know the law of kindness." For thousands of years, the Jewish woman has applied her surplus energies to the law of kind- ness, or as society has come to call it, "charity." The con- ception of charity is also not a vague quantity which the Jew had to discover and formulate for himself. In Deuter- onomy, we find the term amply explained and its elements adequately stressed to make it endure through the ages. In simple and graphic style, charity is described thus: "When thou cuttest down thy harvest in thy field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, for the widow." "When thou beatest thy olive tree thou shalt not go over the bow again; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, for the widow." "When thou gatherest the grapes for the vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterwards; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow." 165 166 AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK The field, the olive tree and the grapes have evolved through the centuries as symbols of the past.

It is not enough to say that women TELLS A STORY OF THE INTERSECTION OF MEDICINE AND JEWISH came to take part in fields dominated by men. Instead, we must examine the categories CULTURE. ITS TITLE IMPLIES THAT “CHICKEN SOUP” IS NOT QUITE themselves – Jews, medicine, and America – and their imperfect abstractions: religion, science, and nation. To do so, we must move beyond common notions and assumptions WHAT WE MEAN WHEN WE TALK ABOUT JEWS AND MEDICINE. of what is scientific versus what is religious to examine two fundamental questions: 1) INSTEAD, CHICKEN SOUP IS WHAT THE (ASHKENAZI) JEWISH MOTHER which values, beliefs, and practices make something religious or scientific? and 2) why do people choose to label things either scientific or religious?     NATHAN STRAUS By DAVID DE SOLA POOL SEVENTY years ago, a growing lad in Georgia was dream- ing how wonderful it would be if he could save a human life. That lad, Nathan Straus, grew up to be a man to whom untold multitudes of men and women living today owe their lives. He was an immigrant boy who had been born in Otterberg, Rhenish Palatinate, on January 31, 1848. His great grandfather, Jacob Lazar Straus was a man of high ability, a leading member of the Sanhedrin convened by Napoleon in 1806. His grandfather, Jacob Straus, died young. In the political reaction after 1848, his father, Lazarus Straus, a landowner and dealer in grain, found his native Bavaria unsympathetic to his democratic views, and in 1852, like many another aggressive and independent spirit in the Germany of those days, he made his way west- ward to the freedom of America. After spending some time as an itinerant vendor of general merchandise on the plan- tations of Georgia, he settled in 1853 in that State, at Tal- botton, as the keeper of a general store. A year later he was in a position to bring his family from Germany, and in September, he was joined by his wife, Sara (who was also his first cousin, the daughter of his father's youngest brother Salamon) and his children, Isidor, a lad of nine, Hermina, a year and a half younger, Nathan a boy of six, and Oscar, a baby of three and a half years. A charming picture of those early days has been drawn by Oscar Straus in his volume of memoirs "Under Four Administrations." We catch glimpses of the boy, Nathan, attending the local Baptist Bible School for two years, but at the same time being trained in Judaism by his father, a Hebraist of parts and a lover of the traditions of Jewish life.
