Susan Hartmann was a model adviser, keeping me focused while at the same time allowing for, and fostering, my disparate interests. Leila Rupp always urged me to look at the wider context. Her comparative perspective helped me draw connections between American Jewish women and the broader international communities with which they interacted. The inaugural meeting was held in the Binyanei Ha'umah in the presence of the President of the State and Mrs. Shazar, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Knesset, Cabinet Ministers, the Chief Justice, Judges of the Supreme Court, the State Comptroller, visitors from abroad, public dignitaries and a large and representative gathering which filled the entire hall. The meeting was opened by Mr. Jacob Tsur, Chair- man of the Zionist General Council, who paid homage to Israel's Nobel Prize Laureate, the writer S.Y, Agnon, and read the message Mr. Agnon had sent to the gathering. Mr. Tsur also congratulated the poetess and writer, Nellie Zaks. The speaker then went on to discuss the gravity of the time for both the State of Israel and the Zionist Move- ment, and called upon citizens in this country and Zionists throughout the world to stand shoulder to shoulder to over- come the crisis. Professor Andre Chouraqui, Deputy Mayor of the City of Jerusalem, welcomed the delegates on behalf of the City.

GOLDSTEIN, M.D. (1902-1962) by TERRY GOLDSTEIN AND BERYL SEGAL In a "Vignette" written for the Harrington House News, a publication of the staff of the Rhode Island Medical Center, an unknown author had this to say about Sidney S. Goldstein soon after his death: "He once said that 'people (living) after, never remember well those (who lived) before, unless they were awfully bad or raised enough public ruckus to attach something to their public personality.' "Sidney Goldstein would never 'raise a ruckus'. His personality was too quiet for that. And certainly he never sought the public stage other than to remark on the needs of the sick and those who cared for them. "This man had some strong dislikes. He disliked the person who was loud and insulting. He disliked the comfortable family member who would visit his patient-relative for 10 minutes once a year. But most of all he disliked being short. He felt it was almost un-American to be an executive and not be six feet tall. ." Yet this "short", quiet, self-effacing man attained a position of emi- nence in the Rhode Island State Mental Institutions and in Mental Health circles outside of the state. Doctor Max Fershtman, who worked with Sidney Goldstein and was a personal friend, writes: "Soon after Doctor Sidney Goldstein died a committee was formed with the idea of creating a lasting memorial for him. In view of his interest in Religion and Mental Health and his being the first president of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Academy of Religion and Mental Health the committee decided to erect a Jewish Chapel in his honor at the Rhode Island Medical Center." The desire first arose in Europe, but soon American Jews followed suit. The American Zionist movement was riddled with internal strife from the get-go, and it took the involvement of “the People’s Attorney”, Louis D. Brandeis, and his friendship with the American President, Woodrow Wilson, to unite the American Zionists, at least for a little while. President Wilson quickly endorsed the Balfour Declaration, largely because of his friendship with Brandeis. This thesis is about the period between 1897 and 1930, and the main focus is on Louis D.
