Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Copyright by Mary McCune 2000 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the international relief activities of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Hadassah (the Women’s Zionist Organization of America) and the Workmen’s Circle (or Arbeter Ring in Yiddish) during World War I and the 1920s. The work reveals important ways that American women have contributed to international relief and have thereby influenced political outcomes as well as the construction of ethnic American identity through their voluntarism. Studying these organizations presents the opportunity to investigate a wide range of Jewish women, from upper-class to working-class, assimilationist to Zionist. The first two organizations represent the largest and most prominent Jewish women’s groups in the inter-war period. The Workmen's Circle, while not solely a women’s association, was a major forum of working-class, secular Jewish activism. World War I and the exigencies of the postwar period provided women with an entrance into international politics, but also facilitated the construction of a modem American Jewish identity intimately connected with philanthropic activities for Jews in other lands. Far from being apolitical, this philanthropic-based identification arising from the war ultimately enabled non-Zionist American Jews to begin to accept the idea of Jewish settlement in Palestine as one refuge among many, although not as a Jewish homeland or nation-state, a decade before the Nazi rise to power in Germany. II In addition to international events, this study also explores the fundamental role played by gender and class in the development of Jewish nationalism and American Jewish identity. Although united by a desire to aid Jews overseas, Americans argued over the best way to achieve this goal. Solutions frequently reflected an individual’s class status and ideological adherence which became increasingly apparent as groups struggled to cooperate. In similar fashion, interactions with male leaders compelled women in all three groups to construct a more distinctly female, if not feminist, consciousness. This dissertation contributes to our understanding of the complex ways in which personal identity shapes public activism. It enables us to see more clearly the connections between women’s voluntary, philanthropic endeavors and the more traditionally male sphere of international politics. Ill Dedicated to Frank J. I have had the great fortune to be guided along this unplanned, circuitous road by a number of remarkable people. Her comparative perspective helped me to draw connections between American Jewish women and the broader international communities with which they interacted. David HofGnann kindly agreed to join my committee at a late date, offering useful insights from the Russian and East European contexts. Without Michael Berkowitz I would never have embarked on a study of Jewish women nor would I have learned Yiddish, which he continually urged me to employ in my dissertation research. For years he has been a consistently strong advocate, even from across the Atlantic Ocean. Neil Jacobs taught me my "alef-beys,” at first in his free time and then later in more formal settings. Pamela S. Nadell read nearly the entire dissertation, contributing insightful criticism and substantial encouragement while also introducing me to the wider world of Jewish women’s studies. Eve Levin also read much of the dissertation and made valuable suggestions, both personal and professional. Daniel Soyer and Carolyn Sh^iro-Shapin provided crucial assistance with the complexities of the Yiddish language, mutual aid provision, American Jewish and medical history. Sean Martin and Lisa Jenschke played central roles in my academic development. Together with Patricia Levi they sustained me through many a difficult period. Kathleen Van De Loo gave me the courage to return to academic life and taught me the discipline necessary to succeed. Kelly Meyer listened to my rambling thoughts, usually over pitchers of beer, and in the process helped me develop my arguments. I want to make special mention o f the person who gave me my very first "grant": without my father’s willingness to fimd my undergraduate education, even when it might not have been financially wise for him to do so, I might never have made it to all the other paths that have subsequently opened up to me. Along with him and Frank, this dissertation is dedicated to my entire family. As the youngest child in a large family of Catholics, Protestants, Jews, a Buddhist, and several atheists (some of whom are still in the closet), from my earliest days I could not help but be aware of the complex relationship between personal identity, family or communal allegiance, and public activism. I dedicate this dissertation to everyone in my family but most especially to my sisters and mother: —To Pat, for donating computers, monetary backup, and advice at critical junctures. On one side, antisemitism appears as a pressing contemporary problem, intimately connected to an intensification of hostility to Israel. Opposing accounts downplay the fact of antisemitism and tend to treat the charge as an instrumental attempt to de-legitimize criticism of Israel. I address the central relationship both conceptually and through a number of empirical case studies which lie in the disputed territory between criticism and demonization. The paper focuses on current debates in the British public sphere and in particular on the campaign to boycott Israeli academia. Sociologically the paper seeks to develop a cosmopolitan framework to confront the methodological nationalism of both Zionism and anti-Zionism. It does not assume that exaggerated hostility to Israel is caused by underlying antisemitism but it explores the possibility that antisemitism may be an effect even of some antiracist forms of anti- Zionism.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Jacob Tsur, Chair- man of the Zionist General Council, who paid homage to Israel's Nobel Prize Laureate, the writer S.Y, Agnon, and read the message Mr. Agnon had sent to the gathering. Mr. Tsur also congratulated the poetess and writer, Nellie Zaks. The speaker then went on to discuss the gravity of the time for both the State of Israel and the Zionist Move- ment, and called upon citizens in this country and Zionists throughout the world to stand shoulder to shoulder to over- come the crisis. Professor Andre Chouraqui, Deputy Mayor of the City of Jerusalem, welcomed the delegates on behalf of the City.

And certainly he never sought the public stage other than to remark on the needs of the sick and those who cared for them. "This man had some strong dislikes. He disliked the person who was loud and insulting. He disliked the comfortable family member who would visit his patient-relative for 10 minutes once a year. But most of all he disliked being short. He felt it was almost un-American to be an executive and not be six feet tall. ." Yet this "short", quiet, self-effacing man attained a position of emi- nence in the Rhode Island State Mental Institutions and in Mental Health circles outside of the state. Doctor Max Fershtman, who worked with Sidney Goldstein and was a personal friend, writes: "Soon after Doctor Sidney Goldstein died a committee was formed with the idea of creating a lasting memorial for him. In view of his interest in Religion and Mental Health and his being the first president of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Academy of Religion and Mental Health the committee decided to erect a Jewish Chapel in his honor at the Rhode Island Medical Center." Origins, Settlement and Heyday, 1430–1595 Jews resided in Salonika many centuries before the Turkic tribes first made their appearance on the borders of Western civilization, at the Islamic world’s frontier. In fact, Salonika was one of the cities in whose synagogue the apostle Paul had preached Jesus’ teachings. Like many other Jewish communities is this part of the Roman (and later the Byzantine) Empire, this had been a Greek-speaking community leading its life in much the same way as the Greek pagans, and later, the Christian city dwellers around them. The Ottoman conquest of Salonika in 1430 did little to change their lifestyle. A major upheaval did take place, however, with the Ottoman takeover of Constantinople in 1453. The Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, the Conqueror (Fatih in Turkish), aimed to turn the former Byzantine capital into the hub of his Empire, a world power in its own right on a par with such earlier grand empires as the Roman and the Persian. To that effect, he ordered the transfer of entire populations— Muslims, Greeks, and Jews—from other parts of his empire to the new capital in order to rebuild and repopulate it.

Nerone Associate Professor Inger Lisbeth Stole ii Abstract Using the framework of political economy of media, this dissertation examines the history of the Jewish working class counterpublic in the United States during the interwar period and its relationships to the broader public sphere. Between 1919 and 1941, organic intellectuals, such as B.C. Vladeck, J.B.S. Hardman, Fannia Cohn, and Morris Novik, employed strategies to maintain the Yiddish-language newspaper the Forward, worker education programs, and radio station WEVD. These forms of media and cultural production were shaped by internal conflicts and struggles within the counterpublic, as well as evolving practices and ideas around advertising, public relations, and democracy. Vladeck, Hardman, Cohn and Novik all helped to extend Yiddish socialist culture through the reactionary 1920s while laying the groundwork for an American working class culture represented by the CIO in the 1930s, and a broad consensus around a commercial media system by the postwar period. This history demonstrates the challenges, conflicts, and contradictions that emerge in media production within counterpublics, and posits that other similar case studies are necessary in order develop enlightened strategies to democratize our contemporary media system. iii Acknowledgments While this dissertation is the product of many years of labor on my part, I can not imagine having completed it without the support and inspiration of so many people.
