Part One examines elements of the composer's style in isolation, focusing prin• cipally on the use of the modes of limited transposition to generate diverse tonal styles, as well as the use of form and "cyclical" or recurring themes and motifs to both unify and diversify the work.

  • Traces of a Thomistic De Musica in the Compositions of Olivier Messiaen
Siglind Bruhn Traces of a Thomistic De musica in the Compositions of Olivier Messiaen In the year of his centennial, Olivier Messiaen (1908–92) is widely acknowledged as not only one of the leading French com posers of the twentieth century, but as a voice of timeless signifi cance within Western music. In addition to his love for music with its “colors” and rhythms, he felt passionately about two other areas in which he became an erudite scholar: theology and ornithology. A devout Catholic, he owned and diligently read a large collection of theologi cal books; an avid bird lover, he studied their song so thoroughly that his contri butions to the field are now considered invalua ble even to specialists. A third field to which Messiaen de voted a cluster of com positions is that of idealized human love. As he knew, all love derives from God’s love for humankind. The hu man love of God may be but an awkward and flawed response to the divine gift, but even the love of one human for another, provided it is true and strong, must be regarded as a reflection—albeit a pale reflection—of God’s love.1 Messiaen began reading books on theology already as a teen ager. Mystics like John of Ruusbroec, Thomas à Kempis, and Thomas Merton as well as saints like Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Ávila, John logos 11:4 fall 2008 thomistic de musica in the compositions of messiaen 17 of the Cross, Catherine of Siena, and Thérèse de Lisieux were of crucial impor tance for his devotion.

  • Rhythmic Techniques in a Selection of Olivier Messiaen’S Piano Works
RHYTHMIC TECHNIQUES IN A SELECTION OF OLIVIER MESSIAEN’S PIANO WORKS by SALOMÉ VAN DER WALT submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree M. Mus (Performing Arts) in the Faculty of Humanities UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA STUDY LEADER: PROF. H.J. STANFORD PRETORIA January 2007 ABSTRACT Olivier Messiaen is regarded as one of the most significant composers of the 20th century. His compositions are performed regularly and his teachings have influenced many well- known composers like Boulez and Stockhausen. This study focussed on his use of rhythm in his piano compositions. I supplied a short biography of the composer along with a brief discussion of his compositional techniques. Thereafter his rhythmic techniques were examined through relevant music examples from his piano repertoire. Particular attention was given to works from the Vingt Regards sur L’Enfant-Jésus along with Cantéyodjayâ, Mode de valeurs et d’intensités and Neumes rythmiques from his experimental period (1949-1951). In Mode de valeurs et d’intensités he revolutionized the serial treatment of duration, pitch, intensity and attack. His other rhythmic techniques include Indian rhythms, Greek meter, added values, augmentation, diminution, non-retrogradable rhythms, polyrhythm, chromatic scales of duration, personnages rythmiques, symmetrical permutations, rhythmic neumes, rhythmic canon and prime numbers. LIST OF KEY TERMS Indian rhythms Greek meter Added values Augmentation Diminution Non-retrogradable rhythms Polyrhythm Chromatic scales of duration Personnages rythmiques Symmetrical permutations Rhythmic neumes Rhythmic canon Prime numbers Modes of limited transposition Birdsong Religion Colour Catalogue d’Oiseaux Cantéyodjayâ Mode de valeurs et d’intensités Neumes rythmiques Ile de feu 2 Regards sur L’Enfant-Jésus 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Motivation behind the study I have performed a selection of Olivier Messiaen’s piano compositions and found these pieces fascinating.

  • Introduction
Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-00031-5 — Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux Roderick Chadwick , Peter Hill Excerpt More Information 1 I n t r o d u c t i o n In March 1948 Olivier Messiaen gave an interview to the newspaper France- Soir . He seemed at ease with life and, with the Turangalîla- Symphonie about to be i nished, he spoke of his plans for an opera with a freedom unthink- able in later years, when he would become cautious and secretive about work in progress. When asked which musicians had most inl uenced him the conversation took an unexpected turn: h e birds. Excuse me? Yes, the birds. I’ve listened to them ot en, when lying in the grass pencil and note- book in hand. And to which do you award the palm? To the blackbird, of course! It can improvise continuously eleven or twelve dif erent verses, in each of which identical musical phrases recur. What freedom of inven- tion, what an artist! 1 In the event there was to be no opera, at least not for another thirty- i ve years. Instead, Messiaen went through a period of experiment, prompted initially by a desire to develop his own version of serialism. h e trans- formation of his music moved into a second phase from 1952 when, tak- ing his cue from the France- Soir interview, he embarked on a decade in which almost all his music was inspired by the study of birds and bird- song. Messiaen ’ s belief that birdsong is music gave him a sense of mission to bring that music within the scope of human understanding.

Palabras clave: Olivier Messiaen / ritmos no retrogradables / ritmos hindúes / valor añadido. Págs. 241-252 Págs. 2013 ABSTRACT An examination of Olivier Messiaen and his musical language through the study of one of his more notable elements: his rhythms. A concern for this Volumen XCIV, Volumen musical parameter dominated the composer’s entire career, which led him to study in depth not only the Western musical tradition, but the rhythmic systems of other cultures as well. Based on the monumentally important theoretical contribution of his writings, several basic elements of Messiaen’s rhythmic language are elucidated, such as his use of prime numbers, added value, and non-retrogradable rhythms, to reveal to what extent rhythm was an element that defined his creative originality.
