Interview with Cabu Tanitoc French editorial cartoonist and comic-strip artist Cabu (pen name of Jean Cabut) died in the January 2015 shooting attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper offices. In this interview, he talks about the evolution of political caricature in France, differing reactions of people to being caricatured by a cartoonist or being filmed, and the use of archetypes in caricature. Cabu also discusses the influences of other cartoonists on his own art, the high points of his cartooning career, his cartoon reportages, and various book publications of his work. II. Interview with Anke Feuchtenberger Mark David Nevins Anke Feuchtenberger is a German avant-garde cartoon artist (b. 1963) with a strongly caricat- ural style. In this interview she discusses her childhood and education in former East Ger- many, historical influences upon her – including Rodolphe Töpffer – and current inspiration, as well as creational techniques and work in progress. Interview with Joost Swarte Ann Miller Joost Swarte, the Dutch comic artist, designer and architect, and inventor of the term ligne claire [‘clear line’], played a major role in the conception of the new Hergé museum at Lou- vain-la-Neuve in Belgium. (Umberto Eco, quoted in Pratt 1994, 345; my translation) Abstract: This article examines seven graphic narratives by the Italian graphic artist and writer Hugo Pratt. The article reads these narratives in connection with the myth of the Great War as it was defined by the Italian historian and literary critic Isnenghi in 1970 in his groundbreaking monograph Il mito della grande guerra. However, these graphic narratives present readers with a bewildering mix of historical/quasi-historical characters, real and imaginary places, often establishing surprising and complex intertextual short-circuits that connect Pratt’s World War I narratives, history, and the historical imagination. This reading can help us to understand why a comparative approach is unavoidable when dealing with graphic narratives, especially those dealing with historical events – like World War I – which impacted several countries across more than one continent. The Bolshevik forces in the Russian civil war used a wide range of armoured trains. Many were improvised by locals, others were constructed by naval engineers at the Putilov and Izhorskiy factories. As a result, the trains ranged from little more than sandbagged flatbeds to the heavily armed and armoured trains produced by the naval engineers. An attempt to standardise the design from October 1919 only had limited success. By the end of the war the Bolshevik forces had 103 armoured trains of all types.
