    2016, Vol. 4, No. 4 DOI : 10.15678/EBER.2016.040412 Special Economic Zones as Growth and Anti-growth Poles as Exemplified by Polish Regions Hanna Godlewska-Majkowska, Agnieszka Komor, Magdalena Typa A B S T R A C T Objective : The objective of this paper is to present the effects of special economic zones (SEZ) on the polarisation of public economic space in Polish regions. Research Design & Methods : The paper looks at both positive and negative effects of economic zones on the polarization of economic space in Polish regions. In an empiri- cal analysis of internal and external effects of SEZs growth centres are identified. Cen- tre of the polarised region, as a source of development incentives, characterised with a higher growth dynamics in comparison to the other part of the region is identified as a growth pole; while the centre of a polarised region being a source of crisis factors higher than in the region is identified as an anti-growth pole. Findings: In the result of conducted studies 8 growth poles, 19 centres of unstable economic situation have been identified, anti-growth poles has not been identified. Factors that result in the polarisation as well as its positive and negative characteris- tics were identified. Implications & Recommendations: The new model, which captures growing changes and can activate an appropriate action aimed at avoiding crisis can be used as a po- tential early warning system by the authorities of territorial units. Contribution & Value Added: The originality of this work lies in proposing a new methodological approach to identify poles and anti-poles.

Peregrinations to holy pla− Mces have existed almost since the beginning of mankind. Apart from the religious values, pilgrimages have also constituted an important element in the deve− lopment of the geographical horizons of societies. Also they have always been one of the main factors determining religious culture in its broadest meaning. In Poland, the pilgrimage tradition goes back to pagan times, while the early days of Christian pilgrimages could be noted as early as the 11th century. At present, about 5−7 million people a year participate in the pilgrimage migrations. This is about 15% of the population of Poland. The pilgrims are Roman and Orthodox Catholics as well as members of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Muslim. In the past, the pilgrimage groups included the members of Jewish congregations and during the years of partitions also the Polish Protestants. The Poles now account for more than 3−5% of the Christian pilgrims all over the world and for about 20% in Europe. At the moment, in Poland, there are more than 500 pilgrimage sanctuaries. The absolute majority (98%) of the pilgrimage centres belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Among those Catholic centres dominant position belongs to St. Mary’s sanctuaries. There are about 430 of them and out of this number 200 possess crowned effigies of Our Lady. The most important centres have acquired international fame.

    A l e k s a n d e r Bö h m Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Poland: a Case Study of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Polish law defines cultural landscape as “space shaped historically as a result of human activity, containing artefacts of civilisation and elements of nature”1. In this sense, it is protected and the forms of preservation are defined, to a varied extent, by four acts of law: 1. Law on monument protection and care (2003), 2. Law on land planning and development (2003), 3. Law on the preservation of nature (2004), 4. Law on environmental protection (2001). As part of heritage preservation efforts, cultural landscape may be protected as such or as a representation of a group of objects enjoying legal protection. Also, both forms may co-exist, for example when listed historical buildings form a complex which is also inscribed on a heritage list as a whole, or hold another type of protected status. Apart from in­ scriptions on lists maintained by local (Voivodeship) conservation officers, the laws provide for: - awarding the title of Historic Monument (by way of Ordinance of the President of Poland), - creating cultural parks (by way of resolution of localself-governments), - enforcing protection in a local planning scheme (by way of resolution of local self-governments).
