In a country with some 40,000 Catholic priests, Priests for Life (PFL) has never claimed more than 5,000 members—and quietly stopped counting some time around the turn of the 21st century. Unapologetic electoral campaigning, and unabashed cooperation with the most militant antichoice figures, have not brought PFL membership numbers to match the New York priest’s ambitions. Pavone’s nonprofit says it is “for everyone who wants to stop abortion and euthanasia,” “not an association that seeks to be some sort of separate and elite group of priests who claim to be more pro-life than all the rest”1; it boasts the church hierarchy’s approval, strict orthodoxy and a board of archbishops and cardinals. Retired Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Flanagan, 89, dies Oct. 9; remembered for character, personal qualities Retired Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Flanagan, 89, remembered for a life of faithful priestly service in many ways to the people of the archdiocese, died October 9 in San Antonio following a long illness. In recent years the bishop lived at the Padua Place residence for retired clergy. Funeral arrangements are pending. Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, said, “On behalf of myself, Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulette, Bishop Emeritus Michael Pfeifer, OMI, and Bishop Emeritus John Yanta, we offer our condolences to the family and countless friends of Bishop Tom Flanagan. He was a blessing for so many; and in his service in parishes and ministries he was a symbol of God’s grace.” Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulette stated, “Bishop Tom, as so many addressed him, was a gentle giant, a quiet saint. His ministry as priest and bishop in our archdiocese assisted so many with the grace of God which he lived and preached. His enthusiasm for the spirit of the Second Vatican Council permitted the rapid implementation of its principles in his parishes and later in the entire archdiocese. Bishop Tom was a much sought out spiritual director. He listened with the heart of Jesus and assisted with the process of discernment in the lives of countless seekers of God’s will. His welcome into the Kingdom of God will be swift. Well done good and faithful servant.” Bishop Brendan Cahill of the Diocese of Victoria commented, “I always admired and respected Bishop Tom’s missionary zeal, his energy, and his good nature.

  • Bishop Daniel E. Flores, S.T.D. English Biography Fernando Javier
Bishop Daniel E. Flores, S.T.D. English Biography Fernando Javier Flores and Lydia Dilley Flores, the parents of Daniel E. Flores, were both born of families long established around the town of Zapata, Texas, with roots on both sides of the border between Texas and Mexico. They married in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1958, and began to raise their family in that city. During the first years of their marriage, seeking work to support his family, Bishop Flores’ father worked construction, and for this reason the family moved frequently. They lived for a time in various towns, such as Palacios, Texas; Luling, Louisiana; Meridian, Mississippi; McAllen, Texas; and Zapata, Texas. They would return to Corpus Christi whenever work was available in the area. Bishop Daniel Flores, second son of Fernando and Lydia, was born in 1961 in Palacios, Texas. He was baptized at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Zapata, Texas. Bishop Flores’ father passed away in 1984; that same year his maternal grandmother, Teresa Dilley, also passed away. She was always an intimate part of the Flores-Dilley family. His mother lives in Corpus Christi, Texas. He has two brothers and one sister and numerous nephews and nieces. He also maintains close relations with his aunts, and cousins, and other familial relations established over the years. Bishop Flores received his First Holy Communion and Confirmation at Saint Paul the Apostle Church in the Flour Bluff area of Corpus Christi. He graduated from Flour Bluff High School in 1979. During high school, he began to consider the possibility of studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

  • Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Michael Boulette March 20, 2017
You follow a long line of distinguished auxiliary bishops here: Bishops Raymondo Pena, Charles Grahmann, Ricardo Ramirez, Bernard Popp, Edmund Carmody, Joseph Galante, John Yanta, Thomas Flanagan, Patrick Zurek, and Oscar Cantú. Our beloved Archbishop Patrick Flores was also an auxiliary bishop here before being appointed bishop of El Paso and then archbishop of San Antonio. Msgr. Mike, we gather this afternoon with your family and friends -- old friends who have supported you in the past and new ones whom you will love and serve as a bishop and who have already reached out to you with prayerful support. In particular, I mention your dear Mother, who is with us today -- supporting you as she has done for all of your life. I also welcome Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio and representative of Pope Francis -- my brother archbishops and bishops -- esteemed ecumenical and interfaith leaders -- representatives of the civic community -- priests, religious, permanent deacons, faithful of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Mike, aunque naciste en Hudson Falls, Nueva York, has sido texano y miembro de esta Iglesia local desde que tu familia se mudó a Fredericksburg cuando tenías nueve años.

  • Report on Child Sexual Abuse by Clergy in the Archdiocese of San Antonio
Report on Child Sexual Abuse by Clergy in the Archdiocese of San Antonio With this report, the Archdiocese of San Antonio seeks to present a transparent account of clergy sexual abuse of children in our local church from 1940 to the present. The Archdiocese further seeks to express regret and apologize for the failings and sins that have hurt the Church so deeply, especially in our most vulnerable members. The Archdiocese especially asks forgiveness for the failings of those who have held positions of leadership in the Church. Many allegations described below cannot be positively confirmed, and it is difficult to fully understand and accurately judge the history summarized in this report. Nevertheless, we believe that it is critically important for us to acknowledge this history and the pain that it has caused. After much prayerful discernment, and bearing consciously the burden of anger and shame accumulated over the last 79 years, the Archdiocese makes this report praying that those who are suffering will be able to hear this as a sincere apology. Purpose of the Report This report is published with three goals in mind. The Archdiocese seeks to offer public support to those who have survived clergy sexual abuse as children. The Archdiocese hopes, through transparency, to more fully address the findings identified in this report. Finally, the Archdiocese strives to share with all of the faithful the painful truths found in this report in order to invite our entire Church to more authentic holiness. As the Archdiocese presents this report to the parishes and the faithful of the Church in San Antonio, we address especially those who are survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
