Levin, Esq Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, USA This paper investigates the evolution of the role of the first lady of the United States, which is of particular interest because of its non-constitutional and non-formal nature that has become one of the most prominent and visible non-paid positions in the world. The first lady’s responsibility has evolved from serving as a social hostess and a ceremonial presence at the side of the President, to serving as a spokeswoman for the country. More recently, in addition to her other duties, the first lady has acted as a political surrogate for the President. This study conducts a social movement rhetorical analysis, using the technique of discourse tracing, to examine how and why the culture of the office of the first lady has evolved. Finally, this study will add current political culture scholarship by investigating issues surrounding the 2016 presidential election. Keywords: politics, first Ladies, organizational culture, elections Introduction Prior to 1933 and the election of Franklin Roosevelt, the first lady was a non-essential member of the White House. The spouse of the President did not even have an official name or position for many years. These women were expected to fill traditional wifely roles including supporting their husbands, hosting parties, and being ready to make the President look good to the public. -

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. —19th Amendment to the United States Constitution In 1920, after decades of tireless activism by countless determined suffragists, American women were finally guaranteed the right to vote. The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. It was ratified by the states on August 18, 1920 and certified as an amendment to the US Constitution on August 26, 1920. Developed in partnership with the National Park Service, this publication weaves together multiple stories about the quest for women’s suffrage across the country, including those who opposed it, the role of allies and other civil rights movements, who was left behind, and how the battle differed in communities across the United States. Important Women in United States History (through the 20th century) (a very abbreviated list) 1500s & 1600s Brought settlers seeking religious freedom to Gravesend at New Lady Deborah Moody Religious freedom, leadership 1586-1659 Amsterdam (later New York). She was a respected and important community leader. Banished from Boston by Puritans in 1637, due to her views on grace. In Religious freedom of expression 1591-1643 Anne Marbury Hutchinson New York, natives killed her and all but one of her children. She saved the life of Capt. John Smith at the hands of her father, Chief Native and English amity 1595-1617 Pocahontas Powhatan. Later married the famous John Rolfe. Met royalty in England. Thought to be North America's first feminist, Brent became one of the Margaret Brent Human rights; women's suffrage 1600-1669 largest landowners in Maryland. Aided in settling land dispute; raised armed volunteer group. One of America's first poets; Bradstreet's poetry was noted for its Anne Bradstreet Poetry 1612-1672 important historic content until mid-1800s publication of Contemplations , a book of religious poems. Wife of prominent Salem, Massachusetts, citizen, Parsons was acquitted Mary Bliss Parsons Illeged witchcraft 1628-1712 of witchcraft charges in the most documented and unusual witch hunt trial in colonial history. Drawing on slave narratives, ex-slave interviews, Civil War court-martials, Congressional testimonies, organizational minutes and conference proceedings, A Crusade takes an intersectional and subaltern approach to the era that has received extreme scholarly attention as the early women’s rights movement to understand the concerns of marginalized women around the sexualized topic of virtue. I argue that enslaved and free black women pioneered a women’s rights framework around sexual autonomy and consent through their radical engagement with the traditionally conservative and racially-exclusionary ideals of chastity and female virtue of the Victorian-era. -

Until recently, the role of women has been virtually invisible in accounts of Progressive social reform. While this is no longer the case, considerable questions remain. Using the archival records of one woman, Caroline Bartlett Crane (1858-1935), which document her professional, intellectual and personal life, I describe her contribution to social reform and early sociology. -

Decades of Reform: Prostitutes, Feminists, and the War on White Slavery By: Jodie Masotta Under the direction of: Professor Nicole Phelps & Professor Major Jackson University of Vermont Undergraduate Honors Thesis College of Arts and Sciences, Honors College Department of History & Department of English April 2013 Introduction to Project: This research should be approached as an interdisciplinary project that combines the fields of history and English. The essay portion should be read first and be seen as a way to situate the poems in a historical setting. It is not merely an extensive introduction, however, and the argument that it makes is relevant to the poetry that comes afterward. In the historical introduction, I focus on the importance of allowing the prostitutes that lived in this time to have their own voice and represent themselves honestly, instead of losing sight of their desires and preferences in the political arguments that were made at the time. The poetry thus focuses on providing a creative and representational voice for these women. Historical poetry straddles the disciplines of history and English and “through the supremacy of figurative language and sonic echoes, the [historical] poem… remains fiercely loyal to the past while offering a kind of social function in which poetry becomes a ritualistic act of remembrance and imagining that goes beyond mere narration of history.”1 The creative portion of the project is a series of dramatic monologues, written through the voices of prostitutes that I have come to appreciate and understand as being different and individualized through my historical research The characters in these poems should be viewed as real life examples of women who willingly became prostitutes. -

Women in the Environment Educational materials and resources that focus on the contribution women have made to the study and protection of our environment from the past to the present. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s, DEEP, mission is conserving, protecting, and improving the natural resources and environment of our state. DEEP is responsible for monitoring and regulating water, air, and land pollution in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the people of Connecticut and to preserve and enhance the quality of life for future generations. By looking at the past we can plan for the future. This activity packet provides you with the tools and information to research advances women have made in environmental sciences and the roles they have played as leaders. The early stigma of women not being able to master sciences has lasted well into the 20th century. However, there were early pioneers researching, recording and physically advancing the natural sciences and the role of conservation and environmental health. Today, women are found in all areas of study from the field to the laboratory. They are involved in policy making, education and enforcement throughout the world. This packet is a starting point for all students to investigate the past, present and future roles women play in the protection and understanding of our natural resources and serve as role models for future generations. Victorian Values and Women in Public and Private
Proceedings of the British Academy 78, 195-215 Victorian Values and Women in Public and Private ANNE DIGBY Oxford Polytechnic THEtheme of this paper1 is the Victorian ideological divide between the public sphere (viewed as a masculine domain concerned with paid work and national politics), and the private sphere (viewed as a female domain concerned with home and family). These contrasts were in some respects ancient ones: the political dimension of public masculine persons and private female persons going back at least to Aristotle.2 Dichotomies of this kind have had varying force in different historical periods. This paper will suggest that both the ideology and its practical application had particular significance during the Victorian period and the years that immediately followed. A social construction of gender created gendered dualisms of which private and public was but one. Others included personal and political; nature and culture; biology and intellect; work and leisure; intellect and intuition; rationality and emotionality; and morality and power. Do we need these kinds of female / male oppositions? They involve types of shorthand statements of gendered Victorian values that have been taken over by students of the period. Interviews of the Margaret MacVicar Memorial AMITA Oral History Project, MC 356 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Institute Archives and Special Collections Sharon Ross – class of 1965 Interviewed by Emma Bernstein, class of 2020 September 28, 2019 MIT Libraries Margaret MacVicar Memorial AMITA Oral History Project Sharon Ross (SB Mathematics ’65) was interviewed at MIT on September 28, 2019 by Emma Bernstein (SB Computer Science and Molecular Biology 2020). Ross applied to MIT without having ever considered that it was uncommon for a woman to do so. At the Institute, Ross earned her SB in Mathematics, as one of 25 women in her class. She then earned a master's degree in teaching at Harvard University and subsequently taught high school mathematics in Atlanta. Ross then pivoted to pursuing her own mathematics education, earning a PhD from Emory University, where she focused on algebra. (Her thesis was on algebraic modules.) In the final two years of her PhD, she began teaching mathematics at Dekalb Community College, where she would continue to teach for 25 years. When she retired, Ross was a Professor of Mathematics at Georgia Perimeter College (the successor institution to Dekalb). In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she published textbooks in precalculus and discrete math. Ross has given back to the MIT community throughout her career. Among her other affiliations, she served on the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors and as director and president of the MIT Alumni Club of Atlanta. BERNSTEIN: Could you start by telling me a little bit about your childhood, how you grew up? ROSS: Well, I went to kindergarten in Cambridge—after my parents’ divorce, I lived with my father’s parents—and then I spent almost all of first and second grade up in Gloucester [Massachusetts].
