Levin, Esq Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, USA This paper investigates the evolution of the role of the first lady of the United States, which is of particular interest because of its non-constitutional and non-formal nature that has become one of the most prominent and visible non-paid positions in the world. The first lady’s responsibility has evolved from serving as a social hostess and a ceremonial presence at the side of the President, to serving as a spokeswoman for the country. More recently, in addition to her other duties, the first lady has acted as a political surrogate for the President. This study conducts a social movement rhetorical analysis, using the technique of discourse tracing, to examine how and why the culture of the office of the first lady has evolved. Finally, this study will add current political culture scholarship by investigating issues surrounding the 2016 presidential election. Keywords: politics, first Ladies, organizational culture, elections Introduction Prior to 1933 and the election of Franklin Roosevelt, the first lady was a non-essential member of the White House. The spouse of the President did not even have an official name or position for many years. These women were expected to fill traditional wifely roles including supporting their husbands, hosting parties, and being ready to make the President look good to the public. -

Developed in partnership with the National Park Service, this publication weaves together multiple stories about the quest for women’s suffrage across the country, including those who opposed it, the role of allies and other civil rights movements, who was left behind, and how the battle differed in communities across the United States. Drawing on slave narratives, ex-slave interviews, Civil War court-martials, Congressional testimonies, organizational minutes and conference proceedings, A Crusade takes an intersectional and subaltern approach to the era that has received extreme scholarly attention as the early women’s rights movement to understand the concerns of marginalized women around the sexualized topic of virtue. I argue that enslaved and free black women pioneered a women’s rights framework around sexual autonomy and consent through their radical engagement with the traditionally conservative and racially-exclusionary ideals of chastity and female virtue of the Victorian-era. -

Until recently, the role of women has been virtually invisible in accounts of Progressive social reform. While this is no longer the case, considerable questions remain. Using the archival records of one woman, Caroline Bartlett Crane (1858-1935), which document her professional, intellectual and personal life, I describe her contribution to social reform and early sociology. -

Decades of Reform: Prostitutes, Feminists, and the War on White Slavery By: Jodie Masotta Under the direction of: Professor Nicole Phelps & Professor Major Jackson University of Vermont Undergraduate Honors Thesis College of Arts and Sciences, Honors College Department of History & Department of English April 2013 Introduction to Project: This research should be approached as an interdisciplinary project that combines the fields of history and English. The essay portion should be read first and be seen as a way to situate the poems in a historical setting. It is not merely an extensive introduction, however, and the argument that it makes is relevant to the poetry that comes afterward. In the historical introduction, I focus on the importance of allowing the prostitutes that lived in this time to have their own voice and represent themselves honestly, instead of losing sight of their desires and preferences in the political arguments that were made at the time. The poetry thus focuses on providing a creative and representational voice for these women. Historical poetry straddles the disciplines of history and English and “through the supremacy of figurative language and sonic echoes, the [historical] poem… remains fiercely loyal to the past while offering a kind of social function in which poetry becomes a ritualistic act of remembrance and imagining that goes beyond mere narration of history.”1 The creative portion of the project is a series of dramatic monologues, written through the voices of prostitutes that I have come to appreciate and understand as being different and individualized through my historical research The characters in these poems should be viewed as real life examples of women who willingly became prostitutes. -

Women Writers and Modernism. 1 Such influential works as Gilbert and Gubar’s No Man’s Land and Friedman’s early work on H.D. in Psyche Reborn follow modernist tradition in emphasizing the First World War as a historical rupture with the nine- teenth century. Sexualities and Separate Spheres: Gender, Sexual Identity, and Work in Dominica and Beyond Bill Maurer In 1988 I wrote an essay on the conceptual vocabularies of sexuality and work in Dominica, a small island in the eastern Caribbean. That essay began with a critique of the public/domestic dichotomy in the literature on women in Caribbean development. The crux of my argument was that the way some researchers had deployed the public/domestic analytic natural ized sexuality by locating it in the "private" domain of procreation and thus removed from view the relationship between the devaluation of women's sexuality and the devaluation of women's work (Maurer 1991). I was attempting to outline the shortcomings of feminist scholarship that had explored Michelle Rosaldo's (1974) proposal that the public/domestic dichotomy should prove a useful device for looking at gender inequality cross-culturally, and I was interested in bringing the dichotomy to bear on the issue of sexuality, a theme not explored in Rosaldo's work or in any feminist work following in her footsteps. This essay represents an attempt to rethink the utility of the public/domestic dichotomy for the study of the production of sexualities. The public/domestic dichotomy structures Dominican people's under standings of both sexuality and work. But, since the dichotomy is hege monic for both Caribbean peoples and the analysts who study them, it has tended to be used in Caribbeanist scholarship as a mirror of the "facts" of gender, sexuality, and work. Without really questioning these facts them selves, analysts ended up replicating the very essentialisms Rosaldo was trying to destabilize. -

Home Renaissance Foundation Working Papers Number 41 A Brief History of Housework, 1900 to Present By Ann Brodeur 1 A Brief History of Housework, 1900 to Present Ann Brodeur University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN My grandmother, ninety-one year old Norma Wolfgram, recalls what household life was like when she was a girl in 1920s rural North Dakota. “It was hard work,” she said, describing the cycle of chores, from feeding the coal stove and emptying the ash pan, to hauling the water for cooking and for washing dishes, clothes and bodies. “Washing clothes on a scrubbing board was an all-day job!” Not only did her mother wash all the clothes by hand, she also sewed all the clothes on a little pedal-machine. She also grew and canned much of the food that fed her large family. The children helped with these chores as they were able. In spite of the challenges of maintaining a household without running water or electricity, my grandmother also speaks fondly of how chores drew everyone together. “Everyone helped out, and if there was a big job to be done, why, then the neighbors would be over to help, too!”1 There lies a big difference between the households of early twentieth century America and the households of the early twenty-first. Over the last hundred years, forces have wrought changes on households that had been largely unaltered for centuries. Industrialization, electrification, progressivism, feminism, and consumerism, among others, have dramatically altered the way households function. Homes have shifted from their role as producers to a new role as consumers. -
