Home Renaissance Foundation Working Papers Number 41 A Brief History of Housework, 1900 to Present By Ann Brodeur 1 A Brief History of Housework, 1900 to Present Ann Brodeur University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN My grandmother, ninety-one year old Norma Wolfgram, recalls what household life was like when she was a girl in 1920s rural North Dakota. “It was hard work,” she said, describing the cycle of chores, from feeding the coal stove and emptying the ash pan, to hauling the water for cooking and for washing dishes, clothes and bodies. “Washing clothes on a scrubbing board was an all-day job!” Not only did her mother wash all the clothes by hand, she also sewed all the clothes on a little pedal-machine. She also grew and canned much of the food that fed her large family. The children helped with these chores as they were able. In spite of the challenges of maintaining a household without running water or electricity, my grandmother also speaks fondly of how chores drew everyone together. “Everyone helped out, and if there was a big job to be done, why, then the neighbors would be over to help, too!”1 There lies a big difference between the households of early twentieth century America and the households of the early twenty-first. Over the last hundred years, forces have wrought changes on households that had been largely unaltered for centuries. Industrialization, electrification, progressivism, feminism, and consumerism, among others, have dramatically altered the way households function. Homes have shifted from their role as producers to a new role as consumers. -

Women in the Environment Educational materials and resources that focus on the contribution women have made to the study and protection of our environment from the past to the present. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s, DEEP, mission is conserving, protecting, and improving the natural resources and environment of our state. DEEP is responsible for monitoring and regulating water, air, and land pollution in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the people of Connecticut and to preserve and enhance the quality of life for future generations. By looking at the past we can plan for the future. This activity packet provides you with the tools and information to research advances women have made in environmental sciences and the roles they have played as leaders. The early stigma of women not being able to master sciences has lasted well into the 20th century. However, there were early pioneers researching, recording and physically advancing the natural sciences and the role of conservation and environmental health. Today, women are found in all areas of study from the field to the laboratory. They are involved in policy making, education and enforcement throughout the world. This packet is a starting point for all students to investigate the past, present and future roles women play in the protection and understanding of our natural resources and serve as role models for future generations. Interviews of the Margaret MacVicar Memorial AMITA Oral History Project, MC 356 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Institute Archives and Special Collections Sharon Ross – class of 1965 Interviewed by Emma Bernstein, class of 2020 September 28, 2019 MIT Libraries Margaret MacVicar Memorial AMITA Oral History Project Sharon Ross (SB Mathematics ’65) was interviewed at MIT on September 28, 2019 by Emma Bernstein (SB Computer Science and Molecular Biology 2020). Ross applied to MIT without having ever considered that it was uncommon for a woman to do so. At the Institute, Ross earned her SB in Mathematics, as one of 25 women in her class. She then earned a master's degree in teaching at Harvard University and subsequently taught high school mathematics in Atlanta. Ross then pivoted to pursuing her own mathematics education, earning a PhD from Emory University, where she focused on algebra. (Her thesis was on algebraic modules.) In the final two years of her PhD, she began teaching mathematics at Dekalb Community College, where she would continue to teach for 25 years. When she retired, Ross was a Professor of Mathematics at Georgia Perimeter College (the successor institution to Dekalb). In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she published textbooks in precalculus and discrete math. Ross has given back to the MIT community throughout her career. Among her other affiliations, she served on the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors and as director and president of the MIT Alumni Club of Atlanta. BERNSTEIN: Could you start by telling me a little bit about your childhood, how you grew up? ROSS: Well, I went to kindergarten in Cambridge—after my parents’ divorce, I lived with my father’s parents—and then I spent almost all of first and second grade up in Gloucester [Massachusetts]. -

“The Impact of Historical Expectations on Women's Higher Education”
Forum on Public Policy The Impact of Historical Expectations on Women’s Higher Education Linda Eisenmann, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, John Carroll University, U.S.A. Abstract This paper explores ways in which gendered approaches have limited women’s experience of higher education. Using a historical lens with primary examples from the United States and Britain, it demonstrates how beliefs about women over time led to three expectations about their educational participation: initially, that women were not interested in schooling; later, that they were not capable of advanced education; and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, that they were best educated in segregated settings with separate curricula. The power of these beliefs has led to three continuing misinterpretations of women’s historical behavior: first, that they “feminized” certain fields, driving men out; second, that they have been minor and unsuccessful participants in science; and third, that in the early post-World War II era their educational participation was merely incidental. In many ways, when women’s performance defied expectation, people tended to see what they expected rather than analyzing what the behavior actually meant, and women’s momentum in higher education remains inhibited by these earlier beliefs. The Impact of Historical Expectations on Women’s Higher Education In any examination of the status of women’s rights and leadership, the issue of education – particularly at the collegiate level – inevitably rises to the fore. Education often provides an important key to expanding women’s opportunities, and women’s accomplishments are frequently tied to their increased levels of schooling. As a historian of education, I would argue that any examination of current concerns must account for what we know historically; specifically here, ways in which early expectations about women's educational participation have impacted their opportunities and have influenced our ongoing interpretations about their performance.
