Das „Archiv für Religionswissenschaft“ will in seiner Neugestaltung zur Lösung der nächsten und wichtigsten auf diesem Gebiete bestehenden Aufgaben, der Erforschung des allgemein ethnischen Untergrundes aller Religionen, wie der Genesis unserer Religion, des Untergangs der antiken Religion und des Werdens des Christentums, insbesondere die verschiedenen Philologien, Völkerkunde und Volkskunde und die wissenschaftliche Theologie vereinigen. Die Förderung vorbereitender Arbeit, wie sie eine Zeitschrift leisten kann, ist hier zum gegenwärtigen Zeit­ punkt in besonderem Maße berechtigt. Der Aufgabe der Vermittlung zwischen den verschiedenartigen Forschungsgebieten soll die Einrichtung der Zeitschrift besonders entsprechen. Neben der I. Abteilung, die wissen­ schaftliche Abhandlangen enthält, sollen als II. Abteilung Berichte stehen; in denen von Vertretern der einzelnen Gebiete kurz, ohne irgendwie Voll­ ständigkeit anzustreben, die hauptsächlichsten Forschungen und Fort­ schritte religionsgeschichtlicher Art in ihrem besonderen Arbeitsbereiche hervorgehoben und beurteilt werden. Regelmäßig sollen in fester Verteilung auf zwei Jahrgänge wiederkehren Berichte aus dem Gebiete der semitischen (C. Bezold mit Th.Nöldeke, Fr. Schwally; Islam: C. H. Becker), ägyp­ tischen (A. Wiedemann), indischen (H. Oldenberg), klassischen (A. Dieterich, A. v. Domaszewski, A. Furtwängler, G. Karo), ger­ manischen Philologie (F. Kauffmann) und der Ethnologie (K. Th. Preuß). Gelegentlich sollen in zwangloser Auswahl und Aufeinanderfolge Berichte über andere Gebiete ihre Stelle finden, so über neugriechische Volksreligion (N, G. Po litis und Bernh. Schmidt), über keltisch-ger­ manische Religion (M. Siebourg), über slawische Volksreligion (Javorsky), über russische Volksreligion (L. Deubner). Die III. Abteilung soll Mit­ teilungen und Hinweise bringen, durch die wichtige Entdeckungen, ver­ borgenere Erscheinungen, auch abgelegenere und vergessene Publikationen früherer Jahre in kurzen Nachrichten zur Kenntnis gebracht werden sollen, ohne daß auch hier irgendwie Vollständigkeit angestrebt würde. Auf Wunsch wird den Abonnenten des Archivs die ZeitschriftenschflU der Hessischen Blätter für Volkskunde (Verlag von B. G. Teubner) zum Preise von 4 Mark jährlich geliefert. Dort werden regelmäßig alle Beiträge zur Volkskunde aus Zeitschriften, möglichst vollständig mit kurzer Inhaltsangabe aufgeführt und am Schluß des Jahrgangs ein sachliches Generalregister bei­ gefügt. Der Preis für Archiv mit Zeitschriftenschau beträgt jährlich 20 Mark. Aufsätze für das „Archiv für Religionswissenschaft“ werden unter der Adresse des Herausgebers Prof. Dr. Albrecht Dieterich in Heidel­ berg erbeten. Aufsätze werden mit 24 Mark für den Druckbogen von 16 Seiten honoriert. Außerdem werden den Herren Verfassern von Aufsätzen 20, von Mitteilungen 10 Sonderabdrücke unentgeltlich und postfrei, eine größere Anzahl auf Wunsch zu den Herstellungskosten geliefert. Bücher zur Besprechung in den Berichten werden an die V e r la g s ­ buchhandlung B. G. Teubner, Leipzig, Poststraße 3 erbeten. I Abhandlungen Zwei griechische Terrakotten Von A. Furtwängler in München (Mit 2 Tafeln) Gewiß ist aus der Typenfülle der griechischen Terrakotten noch manches zn gewinnen für die Erkenntnis der volks­ tümlichen Religion der Griechen.1 Einen kleinen Beitrag dieser Art mögen die folgenden Zeilen geben. 1. Ein bekannter weit verbreiteter Typus in archaischen Terrakotten ist der sog. Dickbauchdämon, eine zwerghafte Gestalt in kauernder Stellung mit kleinen Beinen, großem Kopfe und dickem, faltigem Bauche, auf welchen der Dämon behaglich die beiden Hände legt. Figuren dieses Typus fanden sich2 in Kleinasien (namentlich Samos), in Naukratis, auf den Inseln (Cypern, Rhodos, Melos, Ägina)3, in Griechenland an verschiedenen Orten, im Westen in Sizilien, in Süditalien und in Etrurien.4 Wie jedoch Material (rötlicher glimmeriger Ton), Technik und Stil beweisen, stammen diese Figuren, obwohl an so entfernten Orten gefunden, doch alle aus einer und der- 1 Einen gesamten Überblick über die religiöse Bedeutung der griechischen Terrakotten habe ich zu geben versucht in der Einleitung zum II. Furtw ängler selben Fabrik, die nur in Ionien gesucht werden kann; Material und Stil weisen mit Bestimmtheit dahin; sie werden in Milet oder Samos gefertigt sein.1 Der Kopf des Dämons zeigt immer jenen weichlichen phönikisierend-ionischen Typus, der auch den Aphroditebildern derselben Fabrik eignet.2 Diese alt­ ionische Kunst hat in enger Beziehung zu den Phönikern gestanden. So ist es denn auch eine gewiß richtige Vermutung, daß der Typus dieses Dämons aus dem des ägyptischen, in Amuletten sehr häufigen und namentlich durch die Phöniker weit ver­ breiteten sog. „Ptah-Embryo“, des Ptah-Sokaris herzuleiten ist.3 Die wesentlichen Formen des ägyptischen Idols, der große Kopf mit dem kleinen Gesicht und übergroßen Schädel, der dicke Leib und die krummen Beinchen scheinen von der Ge­ stalt des Säuglings entlehnt. Doch wurden auch Zwerge in Ägypten gleichartig gebildet, und die krummen kurzen Beine eignen auch dem bärtigen, zwerghaften Besa-Idole. Ich ver­ mute, daß dem Besa- ebenso wie jenem Ptah-Typus primitive Idole zugrunde liegen von der Art, wie sie bei wilden Völkern in Afrika und anderwärts noch heute Vorkommen und in ethnographischen Museen häufig sind, menschliche Figuren mit kurzen, gekrümmten Beinen. Diese Beinform war ursprünglich nur eine Eigenheit primitiver Menschenbildung; sie wurde von den Ägyptern interpretiert teils (im Besa-Typus) als Zwerg-, teils (im Ptah-Sokaris-Typus) als Säuglingsform. 1 Ale altmilesisch bezeichnete ich den Stil Arch. Sokaris ist der Totengott von Memphis. Zwei griechische Terrakotten 323 Jene Grundzüge des Säuglingstypus blieben dem Ptah- Sokaris-Idol trotz der mannigfachen Varianten, in denen es er­ scheint, immer1; manchmal ist durch die Horuslocke zweifel­ los gemacht, daß ein Kind gemeint ist2; doch lag es nahe, den Typus auch als den eines Zwerges zu verstehen, namentlich da der verwandte Besa-Typus sicher als Zwerg erschien. Als Proben der Ptah - Sokaris - Idole lasse ich auf Tafel I unten zwei Exemplare aus dem Kataloge des Museums von Kairo reprodu­ zieren.3 Das eine zeigt die beiden Hände des Dämons auf dem Bauche; sie halten eine Feder als Attribut. Es ist zweifellos, daß unsere altionischen Terrakotten eine freie griechische Umgestaltung dieses ägyptischen Idoles sind. Alle Attribute des ägyptischen Gottes sind natürlich weg­ gelassen; die Beinchen sind nach vorne statt nach den Seiten gekrümmt; die Figur ist offenbar nicht als Säugling, sondern als Zwerg verstanden. Für diesen paßt auch der übergroße Kopf, der nur hier nicht die Form des Säuglingsschädels, sondern normale ausgewachsene Form hat. Zur Charakteristik des Zwerges diente dann auch der dicke Bauch mit den horizon­ talen Fettwülsten, auf welchen die Arme ruhen; durch diesen Gestus ward der wohlwollende Charakter des Zwerges an­ gedeutet; doch stammt das Motiv der auf den Bauch gelegten Arme auch von dem ägyptischen Vorbild, wo freilich die Hände Attribute tragen.     THE JOURNAL OF THE POLYNESIAN SOCIETY VOLUME 127 No.3 SEPTEMBER 2018 VOICES ON THE WIND, TRACES IN THE EARTH: INTEGRATING ORAL NARRATIVE AND ARCHAEOLOGY IN POLYNESIAN HISTORY PATRICK VINTON KIRCH 2018 Nayacakalou Medal Recipient University of California, Berkeley The Polynesian peoples have long been noted for their propensity to encode the rich traditions of their ancestors in oral narrative accounts, often memorised by priests or other specialists, and passed down orally from generation to generation. Anthropologists refer to these as oral traditions, oral history or oral narratives, although they are also often categorised as “legend” or “myth”, terms that tend to dismiss their value as witnesses of real human affairs—that is to say, of history. In this lecture, I focus on a particular form of Polynesian oral narrative or oral history—one that is fundamentally chronological in its structure in that it is explicitly tied to a genealogical framework. Now I confess that I am not a specialist in oral tradition, a subject that is sometimes subsumed under the discipline of “folklore”. I am by training and by practice, over nearly half a century now, an archaeologist first and foremost. But I am also an anthropologist who believes in the holistic vision of that discipline as conceived by such disciplinary ancestors as Alfred Kroeber and Edward Sapir at the beginning of the 20th century. While this may make me something of a living fossil in the eyes of younger scholars who hew to narrower subdisciplinary paths, my holistic training and predilections incline me to see the value in working across and between the different branches of anthropology.

It simply questions the privileging of identity so that someone is believed to have the truth. It is not the exposure of error. It is constantly and persistently looking into how truths are produced. (Spivak 1988, 28) This paper starts from the simple question of what knowledge is produced about M~ori men and why. In Nietzschean style, I am less concerned with the misrepresentation of truths than with how such truths have come to be privileged. I do not argue that the tropes such as the M~ori sportsman, manual laborer, violent criminal, or especially the M~ori patriarch, are “false,” for indeed there are many M~ori men who embody these catego- rizations.1 To propose such tropes are false would suggest that other forms of M~ori masculinity are “truer,” “more authentic” embodiments. Alter- natively, I am stimulated to uncloak the processes that produce M~ori masculine subjectivities. Specifically, this article deconstructs the inven- tion, authentication, and re-authentication of “traditional” M~ori patri- archy. Here, “invention” refers to the creation of a colonial hybrid. This is not to say, however, that colonization provided the environment for the genesis of M~ori patriarchy, for it is probable that modes of M~ori patri- archy existed prior to colonization (ie, patriarchy as constructed by M~ori tribal epistemologies, focused on notions such as whakapapa [genealogy] and mana [power/prestige/respect]).

    Royal Backbone and Body Politic: Aristocratic Titles and Cook Islands Nationalism since Self-Government Jeffrey Sissons Nation building has everywhere entailed the encompassment of earlier or alternative imagined communities (Anderson 1991). European and Asian nationalists have incorporated monarchical and dynastic imagin­ ings into their modern communal designs; Islamic nationalists have derived principles oflegitimacy from an ideal ofreligious community; and African and Pacific leaders have used kinship ideologies to naturalize and lend an air of primordial authenticity to their postcolonial identities. Since self-government was gained in the Cook Islands in 1965, holders of tradi­ tional titles-ariki, mata'iapo, and rangatira-have come to symbolize continuity between a precolonial past and a postcolonial present. Albert Henry and Cook Islands leaders who followed him sought to include ele­ ments of this traditional hierarchy in the nation-state and, through ideo­ logical inversion, to represent themselves as ideally subordinate to, or in partnership with, its leadership. But including elements ofthe old in the new, the traditional in the mod­ ern, also introduces contradiction into the heart ofthe national imagining. Elements that at first expressed continuity between past and present may later come to serve as a perpetual reminder of rupture, of a past (a para­ dise?) that has been lost but might yet be regained. Since the late 1980s, in the context of a rapidly expanding tourist industry that values (as it commodifies) indigenous distinctiveness, Cook Islands traditional leaders have been pursuing, with renewed enthusiasm, a greater role in local gov­ ernment and more autonomy in deciding matters of land and title succes­ sion.

Tongan Metaphors of Social Work Practice: Hange h� Pa kuo Fa'u� A thesis presented in partial fu lfilment of the requirements fo r the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work at Massey University Palmerston North Ne w Zealand Tracie Ailong Mafile'o 2005 Abstract This study explores Tongan social work practice and examines how social and community work is constructed from a Tongan worldview. Tongan social workers in Aotearoa New Zealand participated in individual interviews and focus group meetings which explored the Tongan values, knowledge, skills and processes fo undational to their practice. The participants' narratives contribute to an understanding of Tongan conceptions of wellbeing, personal and social change and to an identification of key components of a Tongan theoretical framework for social and community work practice. This exploratory study contributes to the growing literature articulating indigenous and non-western frameworks fo r social and community work practice. Seeking to draw on a Tongan interpretive framework, the thesis employs metaphors, in particular two fishing practices (poia and uku), to draw the findings together. Pola, a community fishing practice, illustrates a Tongan social welfare system comprised of core values, namely: fe tokoni'aki (mutual helpfulness), tauhi vii (looking after relationships),faka 'apa 'apa (respect) and 'ofa (love). Maintaining this Tongan system in the diaspora is central to the purpose of Tongan social and community work and the values themselves are a basis fo r practice.

  • Remembering Makea Takau Ariki, the Queen of Rarotonga, 1871-1911
    COVER IMAGE Natasha Te Arahori Keating & Bethany Matai Edmunds, ‘Te Kōpū’, an installation held at Māngere Arts Centre Ngā Tohu o Uenuku, 27 January – 3 March 2018. ‘Te Kōpū’ is a collaborative exhibition showcasing the work of Natasha Te Arahori (Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāi Tūhoe), and Bethany Matai Edmunds (Ngāti Kuri). The collaborative works are paintings on upcycled native timber by Keating, and woven adornments by Edmunds, made from flowers and fibres harvested in the bush and the streets of Tāmaki Makaurau. In this exhibition the artists create a space in which atua wāhine — Māori goddesses — are depicted. As wāhine Māori, the artists are challenging the known creation narratives, often authored by non-Māori males, and in so doing creating a safe place from which reflection can take place. The exhibition also acknowledges the political legacy of the women who asserted their right to vote, and is part of the wider celebration of women’s suffrage. One view is that a dramatic change occurred around the year 1450 CE with the implementation of the ahupuaa system. A culture that had been based in a kinship relationship between chiefs and commoners changed. Power was gathered into the hands of an elite who then exploited and extracted labor and the fruits of that labor from a larger group of workers in order to maintain a privileged lifestyle and pursue political goals. In opposition is another picture of Hawaii’s history. This view is that power was shared between chiefs and commoners in a reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationship. Perhaps one of the most significant impacts is a re-evaluation of the entire approach to health, economics and social wellbeing. Perhaps for the first time in several decades, the established mantra of more money, more stuff, and more efficiency are being challenged by the possibility that more health, more community and more resilience are preferable. This global catastrophe brings the spotlight onto indigenous communities around the world for both reasons of concern; with these communities likely to feel the worst of the health impacts should the pandemic spread unabated; and for reasons of hope, with their traditions of sustainable, resilient, community focused approach that prioritizes oneness of the people with their environment, and their unique means of working with their environment to provide health, sustainability and wellbeing. The Cook Islands is a small island state in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, and we have a rich history of traditional knowledge including medicinal plants that were integral to the lives of our ancestors.
