Using feminist methodology, I examine whether women writers were deliberately under- represented and their work trivialised by the male writers, critics and publishers of the time. What were the factors accounting for this under- representation? I also discuss to what extent there were successes and achievements, either literary or commercial, for the women writers of the time despite their real and/or perceived exclusion from the canon. Literary writers by definition create public documents, including manuscripts, working papers, and letters. The existence of such records means that perhaps more so than for many groups, we have evidence regarding attitudes, intentions, motives and responses to situations of the individual women writers of this period with which to answer these questions.     View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ResearchArchive at Victoria University of Wellington ON SHIFTING GROUND: Self-narrative, feminist theory and writing practice By Anne Else A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2006 To Susan Moller Okin 1946-2004 Abstract This thesis centres on a problem that stands at the heart of feminist theory: how women may come to understand themselves as speaking subjects located within historically specific, discursive social structures, to question those structures aloud, and to seek to change them. It combines self-narrative, feminist theory and writing practice to make sense of a body of published work which I produced between 1984 and 1999, with a consistent focus on some form of gendered discourse, by setting it in its personal, historical, and theoretical contexts. Although the thesis is built around published work, it is not primarily about results or outcomes, but rather about a set of active historical processes. Taking the form of a spirally structured critical autobiography spanning five and a half decades, it traces how one voice of what I have termed feminist oppositional imagining has emerged and taken its own worded shape. First, it constructs a double story of coming to writing and coming to feminism, in order to explore the formation of a writing subject and show the critical importance of the connections between subjectivity and oppositional imagining, and to highlight the need to find ways of producing knowledge which do not rely on the notion of the detached observer.

The @settlement's early colonists lugged ashore libraries, musical instruments, paints, Samuel Butler William Pember Reeves easels and plans for a grammar school and university. Within the first decade they Edith Grossmann started a newspaper, founded choral and orchestral societies, staged plays and Jessie Mackay started a public library. A surprising number of these pioneers were competent Arnold Wall writers. The published memoirs, letters, journals and poetry left by Charlotte Godley, Blanche Bau han Edward and Crosbie Ward, James FitzGerald, Henry Sewell, Sarah Courage, Laurence Johannes An 8ersen Kennaway, Lady Barker, Samuel Butler and other "pilgrims" established a robust Mary Ursula Bethell literary tradition in Canterbury, particularly in non-fiction and poetry. From the Alan Mulgan 1930s to the early 1950s, during Denis Glover's association with The Caxton Press, Esther Glen Oliver Duff Christchurch was indisputably the focal point of New Zealand's artistic life. The N~aioMarsh town's cultural and literary importance - about 280 writers are listed in this booklet D Arcy Cresswell in a record which is by no means definitive - continues to this day.     CHARLES BRASCH AND THE BETRAYAL OF ROMANTICISM by Joost Daalder A number of years ago, in "Disputed Ground" in the WRITING IN ASIA SERIES Poetry of Charles Brasch' (Landfall 103) I argued that Vincent O'Sullivan had been wrong to suggest that Brasch's allegiance was to the physical world, and not to spiritual powers. I would still maintain that Brasch wrote a good many poems which bear out my contention that his loyalties were about equally divided. What I failed to do, however, was to make plain that the spiritualizing influence of Wordsworth and Shelley was a more marked feature of Brasch's early i poems than his later ones. It would obviously be a simplif- ication to suggest that this development went in a straight the Importance of LIVING line (my Landfall essay showed that this was not so), but some of the poems which support O'Sullivan's contention demonstrate that the movement was well under way before it culminated in Brasch's last volume, Home Ground (ed. Alan Roddick, Caxton, Christchurch, 1974), which for a proper view of his overall achievement is so important that it The Mutes in the S warrants a fairly detailed separate discussion.     THE JOURNAL OF THE POLYNESIAN SOCIETY VOLUME 127 No.3 SEPTEMBER 2018 VOICES ON THE WIND, TRACES IN THE EARTH: INTEGRATING ORAL NARRATIVE AND ARCHAEOLOGY IN POLYNESIAN HISTORY PATRICK VINTON KIRCH 2018 Nayacakalou Medal Recipient University of California, Berkeley The Polynesian peoples have long been noted for their propensity to encode the rich traditions of their ancestors in oral narrative accounts, often memorised by priests or other specialists, and passed down orally from generation to generation. Anthropologists refer to these as oral traditions, oral history or oral narratives, although they are also often categorised as “legend” or “myth”, terms that tend to dismiss their value as witnesses of real human affairs—that is to say, of history. In this lecture, I focus on a particular form of Polynesian oral narrative or oral history—one that is fundamentally chronological in its structure in that it is explicitly tied to a genealogical framework. Now I confess that I am not a specialist in oral tradition, a subject that is sometimes subsumed under the discipline of “folklore”. I am by training and by practice, over nearly half a century now, an archaeologist first and foremost. But I am also an anthropologist who believes in the holistic vision of that discipline as conceived by such disciplinary ancestors as Alfred Kroeber and Edward Sapir at the beginning of the 20th century. While this may make me something of a living fossil in the eyes of younger scholars who hew to narrower subdisciplinary paths, my holistic training and predilections incline me to see the value in working across and between the different branches of anthropology.

    The Passionate Puritan mary jane mander was born in Ramarama, a small settlement near Auckland, in 1877. The daughter of pioneering parents, she led an itinerant childhood, her father’s kauri-milling business taking the family to various parts of the far north of New Zealand. Although much of her adult life was spent in New York and London, the far north was the enduring source of inspiration for her fiction, begin- ning with The Story of a New Zealand River (1920). This first novel examines the life and marriage of an Englishwoman transplanted to a timber-milling settlement on the banks of the Otamatea River. Poorly received in New Zealand at the time, it is now popular and widely recognized as one of the important founding classics of New Zealand literature. The Passionate Puritan (1921), The Strange Attraction (1922) and Allen Adair (1925) quickly followed. This quartet of novels portrays New Zealand pioneer society with an attentive realism and seriousness of purpose that no compatriot before her had sustained at such length. Together they constitute one of our most lively and accessible records of the colonial period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Mander’s last two novels, The Besieging City (1926) and Pins and Pinnacles (1928), are set in New York and London respectively. Fluent and professional works, they nevertheless lack the intrinsic interest of Mander’s efforts to capture her own country in prose, and are now generally regarded as a coda to her writing career. She returned to New Zealand in 1932, but never managed to write another novel.

    ka mate ka ora: a new zealand journal of poetry and poetics Issue 8 September 2009 Hunt’s Baxter Francis McWhannell I didn’t know Then how short life is – how few The ones who really touch us (‘Words to Lay a Strong Ghost’, 1966) It is a little over 83 years since James Keir Baxter was born. Today, he is one of Aotearoa’s more familiar cultural personages (along with such figures as Janet Frame and Colin McCahon) and one of our few widely recognised poets, represented in the majority of twentieth century New Zealand verse anthologies and in many international English-language equivalents. Indeed, Baxter has in this country assumed the status of icon (with all the ambiguity that this implies). Had he not died in 1972, Baxter would no doubt have something to say about his present fame – he was an astute and prolific commentator, and an uncommonly self-conscious one. As it is, we-the-living are steadily turning out Baxter-based publications, James K. Baxter: Poems (Auckland University Press, 2009), selected and introduced by Sam Hunt, being just one recent example. I first learned of Hunt’s selection of Baxter when visiting a favourite Auckland bookshop. The handsome little publication was displayed in precisely the same spot as had been occupied some months before by another attractive hardback, Hunt’s own Doubtless: New & Selected Poems (Craig Potton, 2008). This latter I had purchased without hesitation. Despite wide popularity and saleability, Hunt’s poetry has of late been rather hard to get hold of. The demise of Hazard Press of Christchurch has effectively rendered Hunt’s Making Tracks: A Selected 50 Poems (1991) out of print, and second hand copies of his predominantly paperback collections are scarce, especially in good condition.
