Designed as a ‘painting with plants’, it did not seek to evoke classical landscapes, paradise, or some lost perfection, instead it used local plants to enhance the inherent qualities of the existing landscape.     The Birth of an Empire of Two Churches: Church Property, Theologians, and the League of Schmalkalden CHRISTOPHER OCKER ID THE CREATION OF PROTESTANT CHURCHES IN GERMANY during Luther’s generation follow someone’s intentions? Heiko Oberman, appealing to a medieval DLuther, portrays the reformer as herald of a dawning apocalypse, a monk at war with the devil, who expected God to judge the world and rescue Christians with no help from human institutions, abilities, and processes.1 This Luther could not have intended the creation of a new church. Dorothea Wendebourg and Hans-Jürgen Goertz stress the diversity of early evangelical movements. Goertz argues that anticlericalism helped the early Reformation’s gamut of spiritual, political, economic, and social trends to coalesce into moderate and radical groups, whereas Wendebourg suggests that the movements were only united in the judgment of the Counter Reformation.2 Many scholars concede this diversity. “There were very many different Reformations,” Diarmaid McCulloch has recently observed, aimed “at recreating authentic Catholic Christianity.”3 But some intention to form a new church existed, even if the intention was indirect. Scholars have identified the princely reaction to the revolting peasants of 1524–1525 as the first impetus toward political and institutional Protestantism.4 There was a 1Heiko A. REGIO Ideological and Territorial Cohesion of Silesia vol. 3 eds Lucyna Harc, Przemysław Wiszewski, Rościsław Żerelik Silesia under the Authority of the Hohenzollerns (1741–1918) (1741–1918) Silesia under the Authority of Hohenzollerns vol. 3 Silesia under the Authority This volume contains a collection of studies which are the product of research of the Hohenzollerns (1741–1918) on the formation of Silesia as a region in the period 1740-1918. It is another portion of the summary of research undertaken by a team of Polish historians in conjunction with their participation in the programme of the European Science Foundation entitled Cuius regio. An analysis of the cohesive and disruptive forces determining the attachment and commitment of (groups of) persons to and the cohesion within regions. The project’s assumptions were for original analyses to be conducted on five factors significant in the functioning of the region: administration (Paweł Jaworski), economy (Teresa Kulak), social groups (Wanda Musialik and Dorota Schreiber-Kurpiers), ethnic issues (Dorota Schreiber-Kurpiers) and the national and cultural identity of the region’s inhabitants (Teresa Kulak). In each of the spheres analysed in this book, what has been demonstrated is the prevalence of disintegrating factors in the region from the period of its seizure by the armies of Frederick II until the conclusion of World War I. Top-down efforts undertaken by the authorities aimed at integrating the region with the Prussian state, and then with the Reich, did not fully achieve their objectives. The split into the two sub-regions of Upper and Lower Silesia would seem to be inevitable, in spite of particular unifying elements, particularly in the economic sphere during the second half of the 19ʰ and beginning of the 20ʰ century.

PRITCHETT and KLAUS WUST INTRODUCTION More than thirty years ago, Lewis Kurtz, then President of the German So- ciety of Maryland and a vice president of the Society for the History of the Ger- mans in Maryland, suggested a list of immigrants of 1854 as a worthwhile item for publication in The Report. At that time numerous other articles and studies, particularly checklists of German imprints in Maryland and Virginia were wait- ing to be published and the immigrant lists were placed in the reserve file and promptly forgotten. Last year, when the collections of both societies were readied for the move to new quarters, the two present editors of these lists began to look for them among the innumerable boxes and shelves. The search proved success- ful. Pasted in the back of a service ledger were yellowed newspaper clippings with the passenger lists of thirty-nine vessels which brought 8665 passengers from Germany to the port of Baltimore in 1854. Though many port registers are extant, the re-discovery of these lists repre- sents a major event for genealogists and immigration historians alike. They con- tain the names of 5383 individuals. Though in most cases only the initial of the first name appears, almost 700 names are given in full. More important yet, how- ever, is the welcome fact that the home town or village is included for 3850 indi- viduals. For 903 persons only the home state is listed while in 630 cases no place of origin was noted.

    164 Lětopis 64 (2017) 1, 164–166 Franc Šěn: “Měsacne Pismo k rozwučenju a k wokřewjenju” – The First Printed Sorbian Journal The subject of this article is the only number of the Sorbian “Monthly Journal for In- struction and Leisure” to appear in Bautzen in August 1790. The appearance of the journal is considered against the background of the development of the Lusatian press and the conditions relating to the provision of Sorbian religious literature. The Leipzig publisher, Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf, played a large part in this, when he extended his business to Bautzen and Görlitz at the end of 1788. His plan to publish an annual Sorbian Calendar led to friction with the Bautzen printer, Monse. Two proba- tionary students of theology, Karl Gottlob Schirach and Johann August Janke, exploited the situation to bring out a secular journal in Sorbian for the rural population. The pre- face setting out its programme and the individual articles are presented here: a sample from a religious textbook, the translation of a moral tale, a natural history essay and a serialised story against believing in ghosts. The ban on the journal was linked with the outbreak of the peasant revolt in the Electorate of Saxony and the resulting stricter cen- sorship regulations. Further documentation is provided by a copy of the text of the jour- nal, reproduced for the first time. Lubina Mahling: Pietistic Teacher Education in the Sorbian Part of Lusatia – The Below School in Großwelka and the Dohna Institute of the Count in Uhyst/Spree The school in Großwelka, founded by August Adolph von Below in 1746, and the training college established by Heinrich Ludwig, Count of Dohna, in 1804, are often cited in the literature as the first Sorbian teaching establishments, however without placing in more detail the content and personnel of both institutions.

This route connecting furthests places in Europe and ending in Santiago de Compostela is based on a medieval transportation route called The Royal Route – Via Regia. The route exists for over 1000 years and is constantly developed thanks to actions taken by the authorities of the Catholic Church, governments and non-government organizations, as well as numerous enthusiastics of the Way of St. James.
