Er versucht dabei, diese Kritik mit seiner Besorgnis um die Zukunft zu tarnen. Unter Bezugnahme auf die Besorgnis bringt er ständig Bedenken gegen die Politik des Führers und seiner Mitarbeiter vor. Die international renommierten Ingenieure der Nach- Verhaltensoptionen richtentechnik Karl Küpfmüller (1897–1977), Hans Piloty (1894–1969) und Hans Ferdinand Mayer (1895–1980) in der NS-Zeit – eine gehörten derselben Generation an. Sie haben sich gut gekannt, beruflich zusammengearbeitet und teilweise vergleichende Betrachtung gemeinsam publiziert. Alle drei Wissenschaftler gingen im Kaiserreich zur Schule, begannen ihr Berufsleben in am Beispiel von drei der Weimarer Republik, setzten ihre Karriere im «Drit- ten Reich» fort, erlebten Krieg, Zusammenbruch und Wissenschaftlern der Wiederaufbau, erreichten schließlich hohe Stellungen und Auszeichnungen in der Bundesrepublik Deutsch- Nachrichtentechnik land und gingen fast gleichzeitig 1962/63 in den Ruhe- stand. Wie im Ingenieurwesen üblich, wechselten sie im Lauf ihrer beruflichen Tätigkeit teilweise mehrfach zwischen Hochschule und Industrietätigkeit. Im klei- nen Kreis der Nachrichtentechniker begegneten sie sich immer wieder – auf wissenschaftlichen Kongressen und Firmenveranstaltungen, bei Forschungsvorhaben, in Fachgremien und Verbänden. Alle drei waren Solda- ten im Ersten Weltkrieg (Piloty und Mayer als Kriegs- freiwillige), und sie wurden geprägt durch die schwere Zeit danach infolge der deutschen Niederlage und der Folgen des Versailler Vertrags. Doch unterschieden sich ihre Lebensläufe signifi- kant in einem Punkt: dem Verhalten in der NS-Zeit. Einer der drei Wissenschaftler wurde nicht nur NSDAP- Mitglied, sondern auch hoher SS-Führer, der zweite wählte den Weg begrenzter Unbotmäßigkeit, der dritte entschloss sich zu aktivem Widerstand, wurde in Kon- zentrationslagern inhaftiert und entkam nur knapp dem Tod. Ihre Lebensläufe sind exemplarisch für Ver- haltensoptionen der wissenschaftlich-technischen Elite unter den Bedingungen einer Diktatur.
