He origin ally began with blues (Leadbelly) to keep his fingers nimble fo r what he thought would be a classical-flamenco guitarist career. "After an adagio by Sor and a hacked-up Farruca, I began playing Led better's stuff exclusively, " Dave reports. He began playing the 12-string guitar when a senior in high school, and lists as early influences, Elvis' Sun label recordings, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, early Chicago, and, of course, Leadbelly. " I sing the blues because it's a medium not as demanding as literatu re or serious music, and free enough to permit a total statement of personality and. self, " Dave states. We have just the right mixture of folks who’ve been around awhile and those who are relatively new to performing. For instance we all know who Dr. Elmo is, by his famous song “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” though we’re not all familiar with his bluegrass leanings through his band “Wild Blue” Kathy Kallick is another long-time SoCoFoSo favorite. She headlined one of our original Sonoma County Folk Fes- tivals in 999 and it’s certainly time to have her again on the Community Center Stage. This time, Kathy comes with a newly assembled band fresh from rave reviews throughout the Bay Area. The word is a CD is coming at the end of April but meanwhile, the live performance at this festival is our only chance to hear her great music in Sonoma County.

The young trio of brothers: 17 year-old Tommy Mizzone on guitar, 15 year-old Robbie Mizzone on fiddle and lead vocals, and 12 year-old Jonny Mizzone on banjo have made quite an entrance onto the music scene in a short period of time. Their latest critically acclaimed EP By My Side (released in June) features a song called “Man In Your Corner ” that for the boys, hits very close to home. The song was written by them as a tribute for their younger brother Sam who has epilepsy. Robbie Mizzone shared, “We wrote ‘ Man in Your Corner’ to let Sam know we will always be here for him and to hopefully inspire others to get involved in the fight against epilepsy. We are really excited to be working with the Epilepsy Foundation in support of our brother and others impacted by seizures.” Sam Mizzone lives with epilepsy, but after trying numerous kinds of treatment found control for his seizures through a form of the ketogenic diet. This special high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, prescribed and monitored by a physician and nutritionist, can help control seizures in some people.
