    2014 Joe Val Bluegrass Festival Preview The 29th Joe Val Bluegrass Festival is quickly approaching, February 14 -16 at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel, in Framingham, MA. The event, produced by the Boston Bluegrass Union, is one of the premier roots music festivals in the Northeast. These awards are presented each year by the BBU to honor artists and those working behind the scenes that have made substantial contributions to furthering bluegrass music in New England and beyond. The 2015 BBU Heritage Award Industry Winner is Berklee College of Music Since the 1950’s, Boston has been a northern hub for bluegrass music, a city where transplanted Southerners, as well as locals fascinated with the musical style, studied at the feet of the Lilly Brothers and Don Stover. Boston’s golden age of bluegrass spawned such artists as Bill Keith, Jim Rooney, Peter Rowan, and Joe Val plus local radio shows and a host of presenters showcasing the music at area venues.     Bluegrass Music Association of Maine Winter 2020 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF BLUEGRASS BOOKS ABOUT BLUEGRASS MUSIC by Stan Keach I can think of three reasons why writing a short article covering books about bluegrass music might be a good idea for the winter newsletter: 1. There’s just not much current “news” about bluegrass music — not here in Maine, and not anywhere. Bands are mostly pretty inactive; there are no jams. 2. Some people have more time to read than usual, because there are no live concerts right now, no festivals, no jams. And, though I think a lot of bluegrass fans don’t realize this, there are many excellent books available about our fa- vorite subject. 3. If we can get this edition of The Bluegrass Express out early enough, it may spur a few Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs on the Grand Ole Opry, Dec. 8, 1945 people to buy a book or 2 for their favorite blue- grass music fans for a holiday gift. Little did he know what clout accompanied the wholehearted endorsement of Grey Fox producer, Mary Tyler Doub, one of the leading movers and shakers in the genre of bluegrass music. First appearing as a showcase band, Jim Gaudet and The Railroad Boys got rave reviews from Grey Fox fans — thousands of bluegrass enthusiasts who make an annual pilgrimage to the festival from thirty-some states and over a dozen countries. “Their talent was obvious; their personalities disarming; and it was clear they were a perfect fit for the festival,” says producer, Mary Tyler Doub, from Owings Mills, Maryland. “Our friendship was instant and I felt a level of trust that you rarely find in this business. These guys are the real deal.” Doub continues, “What spoke to me first were Jim’s songs and his voice. He didn’t sound like other singers and I like that uniqueness very much. Both bands have performed at major bluegrass festivals and toured internationally. Everyone is welcome to enjoy foot-stomping entertainment for the entire family on the Highfield Hall lawn. Formed in the fall of 2014, Mile Twelve has quickly been on the rise. They’ve performed extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Japan, including sets at major festivals such as Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, FreshGrass Festival, Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival, and Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. Their music is in rotation on the Bluegrass Junction Sirius XM channel, and their rendition of the Stanley Brothers classic “Our Last Goodbye” was featured on a Spotify "Fresh Bluegrass” playlist. The band was the winner of the 2017 Momentum Award by the International Bluegrass Music Association, and in October 2017 released their debut full-length record “Onwards”. We have just the right mixture of folks who’ve been around awhile and those who are relatively new to performing. For instance we all know who Dr. Elmo is, by his famous song “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” though we’re not all familiar with his bluegrass leanings through his band “Wild Blue” Kathy Kallick is another long-time SoCoFoSo favorite. She headlined one of our original Sonoma County Folk Fes- tivals in 999 and it’s certainly time to have her again on the Community Center Stage. This time, Kathy comes with a newly assembled band fresh from rave reviews throughout the Bay Area. The word is a CD is coming at the end of April but meanwhile, the live performance at this festival is our only chance to hear her great music in Sonoma County.
