Reviewed by Fred Morton (Retired, Department of History, Loras College) Published on H-SAfrica (August, 2007) Termites, Fantasy, and White Settlement In this work, Deidre Coleman, associate professor of literature at the University of Sydney, examines Romantic-era discourses associated with two 1790s British zones of colonization--Sierra Leone and Botany Bay. She argues that, since slave plantations no longer were allowed as a basis of colonization, all Romantic would-be imperialists had to devise new rationales for their settlements. Most of the monograph focuses on Sierra Leone. Henry Smeathman, who in 1786 proposed a scheme to resettle London's black population there, comes in for extended treatment. Of particular interest are his entomological studies of termites--Africa's premier insect colonist and imperialist. Smeathman used his pioneering entomological study of the termites, as well as his many phallic drawings of their mounds, as an explicit analogy of the way in which colonists could both organize themselves and dominate Africa. Clearly an out-of-the-box thinker, Smeathman also proposed using the emerging technology of hot air ballooning to explore Africa and to exploit its resources. Pornographic letters he sent out from the West African coast also receive some comment. No less bizarre was a small group of British-based Swedenborgians who settled in Sierra Leone in 1792. -

Barthé, Jr. (Doctorate of Philosophy in History) Becoming American in Creole New Orleans: Family, Community, Labor and Schooling, 1896-1949 Summary: The Louisiana Creole community in New Orleans went through profound changes in the first half of the 20th-century. This work examines Creole ethnic identity, focusing particularly on the transition from Creole to American. In "becoming American," Creoles adapted to a binary, racialized caste system prevalent in the Jim Crow American South (and transformed from a primarily Francophone/Creolophone community (where a tripartite although permissive caste system long existed) to a primarily Anglophone community (marked by stricter black-white binaries). These adaptations and transformations were facilitated through Creole participation in fraternal societies, the organized labor movement and public and parochial schools that provided English-only instruction. -

It is bordered by Guinea to the northeast, Liberia to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. It has a tropical climate, with a diverse environment ranging from savanna to 2 rainforests. The country has a total area of 7 1,7 40 km Flag Coat of arms (27 ,699 sq mi)[7] and a population of 7 ,07 5,641 as of Motto: "Unity, Freedom, Justice" the 2015 census.[2] Sierra Leone is a constitutional republic with a directly elected president and a Anthem: High We Exalt Thee, Realm of the Free unicameral legislature. Sierra Leone has a dominant unitary central government. The country's capital and largest city is Freetown (population 1,050,301). The second most populous city is Kenema (population 200,354) located 200 miles from Freetown. Sierra Leone is made up of five administrative regions: the Northern Province, North West Province, Eastern Province, Southern Province and the Western Area. These regions are subdivided into sixteen districts, which are further divided into 190 chiefdoms.[8][9] Sierra Leone was a British colony from 1808 to 1961. The civil war, between 1991 and 2002, was rarely reported to news and till remains widely unknown. Though a relatively small country, the horrendous actions taken throughout this war should not be ignored nor forgotten. This interview will serve as a guide for those remain unaware of the horrors of the war and give a first-hand account of Sierra Leone during this time. Hardy 5 Biography of Michel duCille Michael duCille is a Jamaican-American photographer who currently works for the Washington Post in Washington, DC. He spent most of his childhood in Jamaica and describes his time her as “Idyllic”. He father, who was a preacher, instilled in him the values of education, and in 1970, his family moved to Gainesville, Georgia with hopes of improved education and a more stable financial means. He started school in America at Gainesville High school when he was 15. The school he entered also welcomed the first year the school intergraded blacks and whites. His father, who was also a journalist, introduced him to journalism. At the age of 16, he began to take pictures for the newspaper and has been a professional photographer every since. -

The interview is taking place on October 18, 2015 in Lutz, Florida. The interviewer is Molly Graham. Could you say when and where you were born? Barbara Morrison Rodriguez: Okay. I was born in 1947 in Washington, DC. MG: Did you grow up there? BMR: I did. I did not leave until I went to Douglass. I was there my entire life, except for summer trips that we spent with my grandmother who lived in Virginia, which was only like a thirty, forty-minute ride. It seemed, as a kid, like a long ways away. I had a pretty tight knit family around Washington, Alexandria, Maryland. That whole DC, Maryland, Virginia area was where my father’s family was from. MG: Tell me a little bit about your family history, starting on your father’s side. BMR: My father’s from several generations in Virginia. Poor people for the most part, who probably didn’t feel very poor. He lived in an area called Bailey’s Crossroads. Anybody from DC would now know it as sort of a yuppie, townhouses, but where there those people live is where we played as children. There were several black enclaves down there. All the people on the street were related. They were either brothers, sisters, first or second cousins. -

CHAPTER 4: THE IMPRINT OF HISTORY (17:28-28:30) This section discusses the historical context, particularly the slave trade, that developed African American Language (AAL) in the United States. Various linguistic origins and influences on AAL are described. KEY POINTS Slave history and linguistic isolation From the 16th to 19th centuries, approximately 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World via the transatlantic slave trade. 10.7 million survived and disembarked in the Americas and the Caribbean. Approximately 450,000 arrived in the United States. These Africans spoke a variety of West African languages, yet none of these languages survived the Atlantic crossing intact. As linguist John Baugh explains, this slave history produced a unique immigrant group in regards to language use due to the extreme extent of linguistic isolation. Individuals were typically isolated from other speakers of their language while on the coast of West Africa and during the Atlantic crossing. Once they arrived in the United States, they were sold and segregated into households including some larger plantations. They were prohibited from reading and writing and denied access to education for hundreds of years. Linguistic origins and influences As linguist Walter Edwards explains, slaves had to form languages using linguistic properties from surrounding language varieties. Varieties of AAL emerged from these linguistic contact situations with influences from West African Languages and Southern American English varieties, as well as those with roots in England and Ireland. There is some disagreement among linguists regarding the precise origins of AAL. Some believe that the roots of AAL were heavily influenced by earlier European American dialects. -

This is the first Journal dedicated solely to Sierra Leone to have been published for a long time. We hope that it will be of use to academics, students and anyone with an interest in what for many is a rather ‘special’ country. The Journal will not concentrate on one area of academic study and invites contributions from anyone researching and writing on Sierra Leone to send their articles to: John Birchall for consideration. Prospective contributions should normally be between 3500- 10,000 words in length, though we will in special circumstances consider longer articles and authors can select whether they wish to be peer reviewed or not. Articles should not have appeared in any other published form before. We also include a section on items of general interest – it hoped that these will inform future generations of some of the events and personalities important to the country. The Editorial Board reserves the right to suggest changes they consider are needed to the relevant author (s) and to not publish if such recommendations are ignored. We are particularly interested to encourage students working on subjects specifically relating to Sierra Leone to submit their work. Curated by Alcione Amos and the first exhibition based almost entirely on one of the museum’s special collections, “Word, Shout, Song” looks at the life, research and scholarship of Lorenzo Dow Turner, perhaps the first African American linguist. It also focuses on how his discoveries linked communities in Africa to the New World through language. “In assembling this exhibition, most exciting to me was how I was able to connect words from Portuguese, Gullah and English to their African origins, 80 years later, based on Turner’s work in the 1930s,” said Amos. “His work is still relevant today.” “Word, Shout, Song” is three stories in one: scholarship and success against the odds, a quest to crack a linguistic code and a discovery spanning continents. The exhibition presents Turner’s pioneering work, which in the 1930s established that people of African heritage, despite slavery, had retained and passed on their cultural identity through words, music and story wherever they landed. His research focused on the Gullah/Geechee community in South Carolina and Georgia, whose speech was dismissed as “baby talk” and “bad English.” He confirmed, however, that quite to the contrary the Gullah spoke a Creole language and that they still possessed parts of the language and culture of their captive ancestors. -

Bradley “Ooman’s Wuk: Gullah Womanism in the Creative Works of African American Women” investigates Gullah history and culture as a usable past for modern African American female artists. This project explores the history of rice production and the vital but under-discussed role of women that led to the African retentions still at work on the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia. By exploring the often disavowed female roles, this dissertation argues that once acknowledged, the Gullah woman’s role as ‘keepa a da kulca’ formulates a Gullah womanism or a form of cultural and community activism that is found in the daily lives of the female descendants of Africans living on the Sea Islands. -

2013 Annual Report Inside: Report on activities of 2013 What's on the horizon for 2014 Billie Burn Museum Complex Happy 100th Birthday, We are delighted to report that we con1nue to welcome a Little White School House! great number of guests to the Museum Complex. This year In January of 1913, Richard Fuller Fripp, Jr. sold ¼ acre of our wonderful volunteers welcomed over 6,000 guests from land to Beaufort County for $6.00. A one-room school was 47 different states and 11 foreign countries. then built for the educa1on of white children who lived on One display new to the island. The school remained open un1l June of 1962. the Museum is a Since that date the LiYle White School House has served as special case for the housing for teachers for the Mary Fields Elementary School, Sunday School Bell as a post office, and as the office for the Daufuskie Island and Box, which is on Volunteer Fire Department. DIHF leased the building from loan from the First the Beaufort County Union African Bap1st Board of Educa1on Church. It is believed in 2004 and it that the Box is the housed the island oldest piece of original library and Women Freedman art (the Of Daufuskie Island term Freedman is used for former slaves when released from thrib shop, each for slavery by legal means) on the island.
