El teatro y los tangos fueron los mayores vehículos de difusión de los italianismos. El teatro con el uso frecuente del cocoliche2, un fenómeno lingüístico que nos proponemos aclarar en esta investigación. El tango a través de la utilización de lunfardismos3, es decir palabras que se utilizaban en el habla popular. Para entender la importancia del lunfardo en la sociedad argentina, es esencial centrarnos en la literatura, en el teatro y en las letras de tango que han contribuido a la divulgación y a la aceptación del lunfardo. Este trabajo es ante todo un trabajo de recopilación de documentos importantes de anteriores investigaciones sobra la influencia del elemento italiano en el habla de los argentinos, en particular en el habla de Buenos Aires. En esta investigación enfocaremos nuestro estudio sobre las regiones de procedencia de los italianos. Luego estudiaremos el fenómeno lingüístico llamado cocoliche, como nació y como se desarrolló. In Cochabamba, Bolivia, Quechua and Spanish have been in contact for over 500 years. In this thesis, I explore sociolinguistic variation among bilingual speakers of Cochabamba Quechua (CQ) and Spanish by investigating the relationship between the production of the voiceless uvular stop /q/ and speakers’ sociolinguistic backgrounds. I conducted a speech production study and sociolinguistic interview with seven bilingual CQ-Spanish speakers. I analyzed manner of articulation and place of articulation variation. Results indicate that manner of articulation varies primarily due to phonological factors, and place of articulation varies according to sociolinguistic factors. This reveals that among bilingual CQ-Spanish speakers, production of voiceless uvular stop /q/ does vary sociolinguistically.

Phillips II: The Desert in María Teresa Andruetto: A Literal and Figurative Space (Under the direction of Alicia Rivero) The desert serves as a crucible for processing and creating truth in the novels, novellas, and short stories by Argentine writer María Teresa Andruetto (b. 1954). Simultaneously a literal and figurative space, the desert embodies Argentine history and economic development with particular focus on the northwest and Patagonia. Response to political turmoil and the introspective search for identity and family coalesce as we view protagonists encountering frontiers; coupled with alterity, gender, and language, this results in a new amalgamation that is a retelling of Esteban Echeverría’s “La cautiva.” The first chapter of this dissertation analyzes spaces as both literal and figurative oases, the interior as a microcosm of Argentina, and movement within the desert related to border crossing. The second chapter presents a macro-level view of geopolitics that focuses on an alternative reading of history in the desert, and the veracity of claims and truth are under a microscope in a manner that questions the official discourse of the Dirty War, as well as the creation of a national mythos.

New York Puerto Rican Informant: Tiene que pronunciar la ‘s’. Western hemisphere varieties of Spanish and Portuguese show substantial similarity in the patterning of sociolinguistic variation and change. Caribbean and coastal dialects of Latin American Spanish share several variables with Brazilian Portuguese (e.g., deletion of coda –s, –r). These variables also show similar social distribution in Hispanic and Lusophone communities: formal styles and high status speakers are consonantally conservative, while higher deletion is associated with working class speakers and informal styles. The regions that show these sociolinguistic parallels also share common historical demographic characteristics, notably a significant population of African ancestry and the associated history of extensive contact with African languages into the 19th C. But contemporary changes in progress are also active, further differentiating Latin American language varieties. Introduction The Spanish and Portuguese languages have long been the objects of separate tradi- tions of scholarship that treat each of them in isolation. But this traditional separation is more indicative of political distinctions – Spain and Portugal have been separate nation-states for almost a millennium – than of any marked linguistic differences. In fact, these two Iberian siblings exhibit extensive linguistic resemblance, as well as no- tably parallel and intertwined social histories in the Americas. As this volume attests, these languages may very fruitfully be examined together, and such a joint and com- parative approach permits broader generalizations and deeper insights than may be obtained by considering each of them separately.

ABSTRACT From 1890-1914, Argentina received a large influx of Italian immigrants who wanted to “hacer la América”, or live the American dream of economic prosperity. With Italian immigrants representing nearly half of all immigrants entering Argentina, the government strived to create a new sense of Argentine pride and nationalism. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate and analyze the linguistic experience of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires, Argentina, applying Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social space and linguistic markets, and contact language theories to explain the attrition and shift of the Italian language. This study identifies three relevant social spaces that contributed to the linguistic experience of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires: 1). conventillos or immigrant housing 2.) school community, and 3.) mutual aid societies. Within each social space thrived a linguistic market which language played a key role in the way people interacted and identified with each other. First, the conventillos were part of an alternative linguistic market in which cocoliche, a transitional language, thrived as a way for Italians to communicate with immigrants from different countries.

    5 Coca leaf transfers to Europe Effects on the consumption of coca in North-western Argentina Ricardo Abduca Transfer of the consumption of coca leaves to Europe has been rare, but there has indeed been transference of discourse on the practice.1 Actually, drugs and stimulating beverages prepared from coca leaves have made their way to Europe and North America. Various descriptions of coca had already reached the Western world prior to the advent of products like cocaine, Mariani wine, and Coca-Cola, so by the time that these products became known in the late 19th century, images of the Andean leaves already existed. I will briefl y consider such rhythms or stages of European discourse on the topic and focus on the effects of this situation in Argentina. There, the European- ized North-western Argentine elite, aware of the discourse on this new stimulant, brought knowledge about coca leaves – which had formerly been relegated to being used by Indian peasants and urban workers – before the eye of the general public. I will consider the factors of transport systems, cultural changes, judicial and market systems, and ethnic situations, in order to understand why, from 1920 to the present day, coca-chewing has become a daily life routine in two provinces of Argentina’s North-western region: Salta and Jujuy. This region experienced the Spanish colonizing wave earlier and more intensely than did the rest of the country. Besides, it also retains various attributes that are specifi c to the Andean world. Since it was once controlled by the Incan Empire, the Quechua language was widespread there and is still spoken today in some areas.
