The guiding question for the book is that of: "What do we need to know about Mexico's past in order to understand its present and future?" To address the question, the interdisciplinary resource book addresses key themes including: (1) land and resources;(2) borders and boundaries;(3) migration;(4) basic needs and economic issues;(5) social organization and political participation; (6) popular culture and belief systems; and (7) perspective. The book is divided into five units with lessons for each unit. As Jorge Castaneda wrote in an article comparing Mexico and the United States, "Mexican history appears to be one long continuum, with great and long constants and underlying continuities and only sporadic bursts of compressed, highly intense events." He goes on to say, "For the United States, history is folklore, plus the recent past; for Mexico, it is the essence of the present". Indeed, as we wrote Many Faces of Mexico, a guiding question was, "What do we need to know about Mexico's past in order to understand its present and future?" This question led us to an interdisciplinary approach which includes geography, history, economics, sociology, politics, literature and the arts. In the process of creating Many Faces of Mexico, we have identified key themes that help us understand the continuities in Mexican history from before the Spanish invasion to the present day. These themes include the following: Land and Resources - examining who controls or has access to land and resources and how they are used Borders and Boundaries understanding the nature of borders and how continuously changing boundaries affect people's lives Migration considering why people move, where they go and the consequences of migration Basic Needs and Economic Issues -.examining how people meet their need for housing, food, education and work Social Organization and Political Participation - analyzing how people and governmental systems are organized and reflecting on whose voices are heard or not heard Popular Culture and Belief Systems - considering how people express themselves through language, arts, literature, sports and games Perspective understanding how people view, interpret and react to issues and events in their lives, communities and nation We wrote Many Faces of Maico in response to numerous requests of the Resource Center of The Americas for curricula and other materials about Mexico. Despite the close geographical proximity of the US and Mexico, we \ vere able to locate few resources about Mexico. Those that did exist seemed to put their emphasis on "food, fiestas and famous people". The high quality lessons seemed to focus on ancient Mayan or Aztec jvilizations, or be limited to one or two concepts. We could find no up-to-date, comprehensive curriculum describing the reality of Mexico from past to present. Thus began our journey to create Many Faces of Mexico. Many Faces qf Mexico Goals and Objectives Our goal is to help learners in the US and Canada develop awareness and understanding of Mexican reality and an appreciation for the rich diversity of the Mexican people. Our guidelines state that the resource/study guide should: 1. Develop an attitude of respect for the dignity of all people. 2. Build a recognition of both differences ancr similarities among people. 3. Use the arts to help develop compassion and a sense of connection. 4. Arouse curiosity and teach analytical thinking. 5. Present multiple perspectives. 6. Acknowledge and discuss major inequalities of wealth and power within Mexico and the US and question why those inequalities exist. 7. Explore the wide diversity of the Mexican people, ethnically and culturally, and give special emphasis to the indigenous heritage of the nation. 8. Encourage a vision of a future which is more equitable and just, and to act upon that vision. Teaching Strategies and Techniques Mai!), Faces of Mexico helps participants identify perspectives and examine how differing perspectives influence a person's understanding of events. To bring Mexico's history to life, we incorporate several short narratives or stories about people from different social, economic and ethnic groups, who also live in different regions of the country.

Situación actual del recurso agua José Luís González Barrios Luc Descroix Jambon Ignacio Sánchez Cohen Introducción Ya desde el siglo XVI se documentaba al agua como el principal factor de los asentamientos humanos en el antiguo territorio de la Comarca Lagunera (Corona, 2005). La importancia de los ríos, arroyos y lagunas fue evidente para los primeros pobladores que asentaron sus comunidades cerca de los cauces y embalses naturales, mucho antes del panorama actual dominado por lagunas secas, canales de riego, extensas tierras de cultivo, presas y ciudades. El agua sigue siendo un recurso muy importante para el desarrollo económico de la Comarca Lagunera, sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo, ese desarrollo ha generado recíprocamente una demanda hídrica cada vez mayor y la derrama económica de las actividades productivas no ha ayudado a ordenar el consumo de este recurso, cuyas reservas aun mal estimadas y poco seguras, parecen disminuir hasta agotarse. La elevada extracción de aguas subterráneas, por ejemplo, se ha mantenido durante los últimos sesenta años, provocando un abatimiento sostenido de casi 1.5 m por año y un deterioro gradual de la calidad del agua. Los escenarios futuros con un consumo hídrico igual, son insostenibles para esta región desértica que requiere urgentemente de un ordenamiento en el uso y manejo del agua. Este capitulo presenta una aproximación del estado que guarda el recurso agua en la Comarca Lagunera y sus principales fuentes de abasto hídrico. La Comarca Lagunera inmersa en la cuenca hidrológica Nazas-Aguanaval La Comarca Lagunera es una importante región económica en el norte centro de México que abarca quince municipios (47,980 km2) de los estados de Coahuila y Durango, donde se generan abundantes bienes y servicios relacionados con la actividad agropecuaria e industrial.

ACEVEDO THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Recreation, Sport & Tourism in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2009 Urbana, Illinois Adviser: Professor Monika Stodolska ABSTRACT The goal of this study was to (a) Examine the existence and the understanding of the concept of leisure among Mexicans from the state of Guerrero, Mexico and among Mexican immigrants from Guerrero, residing in Chicago, IL with specific emphasis on age, gender, and marital status; (b) Identify forces that shape the experience of leisure among Mexicans from the state of Guerrero and among Mexican immigrants from the state of Guerrero, residing in Chicago, IL; and (c) Identify changes in the understanding of the concept and the meaning of leisure, and in leisure behavior among Mexicans from Guerrero caused by immigration to the United States. In order to collect data for this study, 14 interviews with adult residents of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico and 10 interviews with adult first generation immigrants from Guerrero to Chicago, Illinois were conducted in 2008 and 2009. The findings of the study revealed that the understanding and the meaning of leisure, tiempo libre, among this population was largely similar to the Western notion of leisure, as it was considered to be a subset of time, free from obligations and compulsory activities. Leisure was also considered a state of being where the individual is free to participate in the activity, desires to participate in the activity, and strives to obtain positive outcomes from participation.

The studies of socioeconomic type in walnut in Mexico are mainly descriptive, studies that analyze the relationships between the different variables of the crop that allow making recommendations to boost their growth are required. The objective of this work was to analyze the relationship between various socioeconomic factors such as garden size, training and financing with variables such as yields, price, gross income, infrastructure for harvesting and sale of selected nuts. To obtain the information, a survey was applied during 2014 to a sample of 27 orchards distributed throughout the region. The data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance of a factor to compare the means of the groups: orchards that receive vs those that do not receive training, orchards that receive vs those that do not receive financing; and orchards of up to three hectares vs.

    5 Coca leaf transfers to Europe Effects on the consumption of coca in North-western Argentina Ricardo Abduca Transfer of the consumption of coca leaves to Europe has been rare, but there has indeed been transference of discourse on the practice.1 Actually, drugs and stimulating beverages prepared from coca leaves have made their way to Europe and North America. Various descriptions of coca had already reached the Western world prior to the advent of products like cocaine, Mariani wine, and Coca-Cola, so by the time that these products became known in the late 19th century, images of the Andean leaves already existed. I will briefl y consider such rhythms or stages of European discourse on the topic and focus on the effects of this situation in Argentina. There, the European- ized North-western Argentine elite, aware of the discourse on this new stimulant, brought knowledge about coca leaves – which had formerly been relegated to being used by Indian peasants and urban workers – before the eye of the general public. I will consider the factors of transport systems, cultural changes, judicial and market systems, and ethnic situations, in order to understand why, from 1920 to the present day, coca-chewing has become a daily life routine in two provinces of Argentina’s North-western region: Salta and Jujuy. This region experienced the Spanish colonizing wave earlier and more intensely than did the rest of the country. Besides, it also retains various attributes that are specifi c to the Andean world. Since it was once controlled by the Incan Empire, the Quechua language was widespread there and is still spoken today in some areas.
