anrhrfitrrManchester — A City ol Village Charm Hrralft Saturday. Aug. 29.1987 LOYALISTS CRUSH COUP Philippine rebels eppeared to have little support MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Loyal troops backed by helicopter gunships and low-level bombing seized strongholds of mutineers Friday to crush the bloodiest coup attempt yet against President Corazon Aquino. Her only son was wounded. On Saturday morning, 500 rebel troops surrendered at Camp Aguinaldo, the military headquarters that was the scene of the heaviest fighting, themilitary said. On Friday night, it said other 402 rebels had been captured. Gen. Fidel V. Ramos, the military chief of staff, had told his subordinates Friday morning that only about 800 troops had taken part in the mutiny. It was not known how many still might be holding out. Ramos had said "mopping up operations” were under way aiid he expected full order to be restored in Manila by Saturday. ' The uprising centered in Manila but the commander of paramilitary national police in Cebu City, 350 miles southeast, backed the rebels, putting the mayor and provincial governor under house arrest. Military and hospital sources said at least 25 people had been killed and 275 wounded, including Benigno Aquino III. Mrs. Aquino, 54. said her 27:year-oId son was seriously hurt and three companions were killed when gunfire riddled their car near the presidential palace early Friday. The mutiny began at 1 a.m. Friday with attacks on the Malacanang presidential palace compound and other targets. The rebels did not appear to have widespread, popular support. When one group was chased away from the tall transmitter tower of government-run Channel 4 television station, hundreds of people poured into the streets, cheering the loyal defenders and shouting, “Cory! Cory! “ the nickname of the popular president.

  • What Ideas Do Viewers Have About
A Discursive Thematic Analysis of Audience Response Towards the Portrayal of Mental Distress in United Kingdom Soap Operas EDWARD SMITH A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the University of East London for the doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology July 2012 ABSTRACT The potential for stigmatising public attitudes to have a negative impact on the wellbeing of individuals identified as experiencing mental distress has been widely documented. The contribution of the mass media towards public attitudes surrounding mental distress has attracted particular interest, particularly that of television portrayals. Research into the influence of the media towards public attitudes has focused on a ‘strong media’ model that assumes a direct influence of the content on viewer attitudes. Recent theory has suggested an ‘audience response’ model whereby audience attitudes towards the subject matter, genre and purpose of viewing can influence their understanding of the content; however this approach is under-represented in research. In the United Kingdom the soap opera genre in particular is positioned to have a potential role in influencing public attitudes towards mental distress, frequently depicting mental distress within a realist frame and being presented as having a public service function. This thesis aims to explore the ideas that viewers take from soap opera portrayals of mental distress within an audience response approach. Soap opera viewers were interviewed about the ideas of mental distress they developed from storylines they had watched, and these interviews were analysed using a discursive thematic analysis, taking into account their beliefs about mental distress, the soap opera genre and their viewing purposes.

  • Caught in the Net
Caught in the Net An analysis of the Guardian’s first venture into online journalism Simen Hunding Strømme Master Thesis in Modern International and Transnational History Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Spring 2020 Caught in the Net An analysis of the Guardian’s first venture into online journalism i © 2020 Simen Hunding Strømme Caught in the Net An analysis of the Guardian’s first venture into online journalism Simen Hunding Strømme www.duo.uio.no ii Abstract This thesis examines the early period of internet journalism in Britain between 1993 and 2001. By undertaking a qualitative case study of London based newspaper, the Guardian, the thesis explores how newspapers started to consider online journalism as not only a new way of doing business, but as a completely new genre of journalism. In 1998, the Guardian was ranked the ninth biggest among twelve national daily newspapers in terms of circulation, but by 2001 its website was the most popular newspaper website in the country. The Guardian’s venture into online journalism began in 1995, when a team of developer known as the New Media Lab was tasked to develop a strategy for online publishing. Over the next few years, several web projects were launched, with varying level of success before pinnacling in a network of websites, Guardian Unlimited in 1999. The increasingly larger focus on the internet as both a tool and platform for publishing, which did not unfold without discontent and critique from advocates of traditional news making, changed the way the Guardian and other newspapers saw their media product and themselves as a company.

  • The Nation's Matron: Hattie Jacques and British Post-War Popular Culture
The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron. Keywords: Hattie Jacques; Matron; Carry On films; ITMA; Hancock’s Half Hour; Sykes; star persona; post-war British cinema; British popular culture; transgression; carnivalesque; comedy; femininity; nursing; class; spinster. 1 Hattie Jacques (1922 – 1980) was a gifted comedienne and actor who is now largely remembered for her roles as an overweight, strict and often lovelorn ‘battle-axe’ in the British Carry On series of low- budget comedy films between 1958 and 1973. A key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, Hattie Jacques’s star meanings are condensed around the contradictions she articulated between power, desire, femininity and class.
